You are questioning who will play left guard when the guy who previously played it was as good as not being there in the first place? Really? Our DB situation is the same as it was against Chicago and Detroit and we nearly beat them.
The best part about the Kaep comparison is that he is MUCH further along than Kaep at the same point in their collegiate careers. One could make an argument he is further along than Kaep now even at age 20. Not to mention he is a great kid, model citizen that you won't have to worry nothing about off the field.
Mariota should be Idzik's number one priority this offseason. Getting receivers is a must, but drafting this guy is an absolute necessity. We need a QB and Geno Smith is not the answer.
I dont love the idea of Mariota. I'd rather solidify the line and WR and then go after a QB. I think if we take Mariota, who I consider to be a bit of a project, we wouldnt be able to maximize his ability. I'd much prefer to either trade back a couple spots, pick up Cooper and a couple offensive linemen in the first two rounds. Then in the third or fourth round, pickup a QB who can play from under center and has film of going through his progressions and make multiple reads. Sign a legitimate backup QB and go into next season with Geno/Draft QB/FA QB.
Kaep is a much better runner than Mariota. Geno Smith is a closer comparison than Kaepernick. The Bucs won't. Glennon is pretty good. The Titans might. Locker is oft injured and hasn't been that good when he does play.
If you draft Mariotta, bring in Jim Harbaugh. He has proven he can coach up a QB which is exactly what we have been lacking.
Do you watch the guy play? You are totally wrong in many ways. He's exhibit A of a guy who DOES rely on his feet. He doesn't hold his ground in the pocket at all. He's very skittish in the pocket. Moreover, He doesn't have accuracy you would want to see. His completion percentage is a facade because he has guys around him that overmatch the competition, he plays in a conference where there is no defense, he doesn't throw that much in general and it gets inflated by certain games. He might be listed at 220 but there's no way he weighs that much, a lesser deal but still. He is a great college QB but his skills don't translate to the NFL. He's not reading defenses. He's not picking them apart with his arm or exhibiting good pocket awareness. Oregon runs that quick strike offense and on passing plays he takes the snap and looks at his ONE read. If the guy doesn't completely out run the competition (which happens most of the time) then Mariota tucks it in and runs. You are sick of Geno Smith - yet Geno Smith is very similar to Mariota in those ways^^(one read). Two differences though - Mariota is a better runner but Geno Smith is slightly more of an accurate passer. Yes, he is and that's not an endorsement of Smith it just shows the type of QB Mariota is. I truly believe come draft time this kid will fall in the draft. Johnny Football fell to 22 and he had all of Mariota's strengths and was an even better passer and prospect. Mariota could fall to the second round. Winston has better NFL prospects by far than Mariota. Hell you could make arguments that the following players have better prospects in the NFL as well -Connor Cook at Michigan State, Shane Carden at East Carolina, and Hundley at UCLA.
Kaepernick also had 2 or 3 yrs to sit on the bench and learn the NFL game. I do not advise throwing Mariota, an unpolished passer into the wolves. If the Jets get the #1 pick and select Mariota - the Jets will look to do that. Then you have to worry about acquiring more weapons. Kaepernick has Crabtree, Boldin, Johnson and Vernon Davis and he's no super-star the QB position. Oh yeah they have Frank Gore too. Be careful what you guys ask for.
Good post except I think Jameis is gonna be a total bust and I would take Mariota over him. The Manziel comparison is a good one. I see Mariota as a cross between Geno and Manziel.
+100 Acquiring Cooper and rebuilding the offense line is a great way to get this ball rolling in the right direction.
If you are trying to win with Mariota right away, then yes you sit him. Other than that I don't think sitting is imperative for his development like it should have been for Geno. His fundamentals are not poor like Geno's were/still are so he doesn't need to work on that in addition to of making the massive adjustment from college to the pros. What's going to be more important for his development is proper coaching.
Yup, I watch every Oregon game they play. I also am an alumni of FSU, so I've seen Jaemis play in every game as well, many times in person.
Depends whose out there but what good is a rookie qb if he gets no time or have anyone yo throw the ball to
Mariota is still extremely raw when it comes to the basic fundamentals. If the Jets get Mariota, it's best to sit him down for at least a year, at the same time when has a #1 pick ever sat down for more than 4 or 5 games? The Jets problems in the past 5 or 6 yrs is taking project players with no support around them. That's a recipe for disaster. Mariota's adjustment to the Pros will be similar to Geno Smith's to an extent. I would rather draft Cooper, and put the pieces in place for the QB in 2016.
Am I the only one who thinks Kaep cant read a defense and if he was in the draft AS IS this spring, would pass on him at number 1?
My disagreement on all this is well documented so I won't rehash. Could you please define what you would consider a disaster? For I honestly could go 1-15 with Mariota and be happy about the season provided I'm seeing what I expect to see from my future franchise QB.
