First off the Chip Kelly offense at Oregon, requires Mariota to read one side of the field. So yes he does go through progressions to a certain extent. Second , Quarterbacks such as Cam Newton have played in spread offenses in college and have suceeded in the NFL. You can keep saying "Mariota lacks basic fundementals", but this is simply not true he never drops his eyes, his footwork is very good, and he always leads his left shoulder to his intended target. Even when on the run, his eye discipline is just fantastic. And as I've stated umerous times, he already makes pre snap reads, it's just subtle. Thesee aret basic traits, most Quarterbacks lack in their rookie season, let alone their junior year. Also if you think he's just dinking and dunking, think again he's arguabely the best down field passer in CFB, and he has shown he can throw in tight windows. Yes, he will have an adjustment period playing under center, but the truth is that it's not important as it was five to ten years ago. And even if he is required to play under center, I believe he will learn fairly quickly. As a matter of fact, most rookie Quarterbacks rarely play under center.
1) So 1 side of the field means you go through all of your progressions? LOL ... That's not what I am looking for. I want a QB that is comfortable moving his eyes from one side to the other. Manipulate the defense. Derek Carr and Bridgewater showed these traits early in college. 2) For every Cam Newton there are about 10 Geno Smiths. Cam is a gifted athlete, and is the exception to the rule. Kaepernick still struggles to this day. For a run first offense? Thanks, but I will pass if you cannot take snaps under center consistently. 3) I never said anything about his footwork, but his lack of snaps under center obviously mean he will need work at the next level adapting to a pro-offense. His footwork has a long ways to go, I've seen him get really sloppy with footwork the past 2 seasons. Especially if he's feeling a little bit of pressure. 4) Pretty much what you told me in your post did not rebuke anything I had to say about Mariota. Too much work to do, not the right fit for the Jets. Regarding the bold part, are you EVEN watching the Jets this season? Look at how horrible the run game is with Geno Smith. He can barely hand the ball off under center. Mariota has amazing physical gifts, but the fundamentals aren't there, too raw of a QB. I'm passing.
This part cracks me up the most. All of the rookie QBs from this class ALL take snaps under center cept for Manziel and believe me you he's awful at pretty much everything right now. Just because YOU believe in something doesn't mean it will happen - stick to the facts it'll make you look better. But you couldn't even do that during that Phil Jackson debate, so just stop here.
If you dont like Mariota then you're not gonna be happy with pretty much any QB that comes out ever. Hes the surest thing since luck
There was a chart in one of these threads with the percent of snaps in the shotgun for each rookie QB over the past 10 years or so. It's a much higher percentage than you'd think.
What about Sean Mannion from Oregon State? Is much more of a pocket passer and high in the 2015 QB draft class .
I never debated Phil Jackson with. I'll find the chart, that shows thwt most rookie QB takes snaps from the GUN.
Geno Smith has awful footwork, which is why he can't play under center Mariota has very good footwork that he is constantly improving., stop comparing the two players. I'm not trying to change your opinion on him, I'm just pointing out that he does not lack all basic fundementals in a QB. I also said he goes through progressions to a CERTAIN extenet. Reading is fundemental. Your description of a prospect QB is Andrew Luck, not gonna happen. Also, how the hell can you say Derek Carr consistently went through progressions, whwn he played in a spread offense, which is also similar to the offense Mariota is in.
They take snaps from the gun their rookie year that's fine, but majority have experience under center. Mariota does not have much experience under center that includes snaps and footwork you know the fundamentals. This is all about displaying those skill-sets on the collegiate level. This past off-season he actually worked on it to prepare for the NFL. It's a new skill that has to be refined. They don't run a pro-offense.
Not once did I say I was looking for the next Andrew Luck. Mariota does lack the fundamentals of an NFL QB, if you watched him you would see these things. What I look for in a QB? - Ball placement skills - Can he get the ball out quickly - Ability to see the field; make your progressions - Basic 3 step, 5 step and 7 step drops. - Reading defenses If he's got the rocket arm it's even better. I don't care too much about mobile QBs, they get hurt. I see some QBs coming out soon that have those skill-sets. Carr and Bridgewater had those qualities. Geno Smith, Blaine Gabbert, Jimmy Clausen? Nah.
The problem is we have tried and tried to find a franchise QB and we have been unsuccessful for one reason or another Geno - was a project Sanchez - regressed and we continued to take away his weapons Chad - couldn't stay healthy It's not easy to find a franchise QB even when you draft one in the 1st round there is never any guarantee
I like him, I have a feeling his stock will shoot up before the draft. I saw a lot of his film when I was watching Brandon Cooks' film this past year.
I like him too but the only game I've seen this year was against USC and he played poorly. His top receiver was out but still.. throwing pick sixes and getting rattled in college is a bad sign.
I haven't seen any of his work this season. I'd go look some up but it's so far off... I don't have the initiative to check out any QB's yet. Another shit stain on the MetLife turf from Geno though, and that will change.
I try to watch some college ball when I can but during the season spending an entire day on the nfl is enough, I'd never do anything else if I watched all Saturday too. I'll go back after the season and watch what I missed. but just sayin that game was disappointing, not up to the level I'd expect from a top prospect.
