You don't agree that the question of why it takes 5 games for the team to play serious football should be asked after he says something like that? You do realize he's not a rookie head coach anymore, right?
I'm not making an excuse for his teams performance. But him saying that the team hasn't played it's best football yet is something I hope he would say. Cause if this is the teams best we're in a lot of trouble.
Junc, you are a smart guy. How can you still back Rex? This is year 6. He hasn't progressed at all. He has regressed. Can't blame his roster either. Smart coaches adjust. He just doesn't. It is so frustrating to watch.
Especially considering 2 OC's, a DC, and a GM hav all fallen on the sword and Rex has outlived them all and the team still plays like Schotty is the OC and Tanny is still the GM as the roster is in worse shape today than it was when Tanny was fired. At some point it has to fall on the head coach.
Rex had his 2 best coaching years the last 2 seasons, he doesn't acquire talent. it's been proven, give him talent and he wins.
Junc is a loyal guy who appreciates (maybe to a fault), what players and coaches have done for the team. I too appreciate what Rex (and Mark) has done...but it has to be continued success and the buck stops at him eventually.
I think that's where I'm at also. I love Rex and I love what he's done for this franchise. It's hard to see him fail and maybe it's for the best. Rex made this team so much fun to watch in 09 and 10. It's sad seeing him fail because of the lack of talent on the roster. If he had a ton of talent and failed as a coach, I'd be more comfortable letting him walk. It just doesn't feel right when a majority of the fault doesn't fall on him.
Stopped listening to him awhile ago but had him on yesterday or the day before. He was all out Idzik is 100 percent safe...I really don't know about that. Unless Woody..who LOVES Rex...is totally caught up on what happened with Geno and Davis saying the team doesn't practice hard...Woody could get caught up in that and fire him I guess. If I were Rex? Frig Idzik...I would go straight to Woody and ask him to name a coach that would succeed with this qb situation the last 6 years..with the receivers he has had the last 2 years. Go get that coach Woody because I can promise you this, there will be no line of decent or better coaches wanting this job. No way. The next coach would want the draft that Idzik produces? The holes he leaves on defense? If I were a coach and watched how for the most part, Idzik wants to develop through the draft? NO WAY.
do you really believe that Tannenbaum picked all the players when he was here? I think Mangini did til he left, and Rex took over.
I think Mike and his staff picked the players, I think they took input from the coaches but it was Mike making final decisions. rex is not a GM.
Francesa is just throwing that out there because of the Seattle connection. I swear Woody would be impressed with hiring the ball boy from Seattle just because they're the champs. Sad.
From reading Low Collision Crossers, it seemed to me that coaches and obviously the scouts heavily influence the draft picks but that Tannenbaum did have final say.
I'm guessing Rex has a lot more influence than we think, we have no talent on offense because we are busy spending every high pick we have on defensive players many of whom are garbage and others who we may never get to see their full potential because of a change in coaches. Perfect example.... Coples. The Steelers took David DeCastro a future all pro guard just a few picks later. Could you imagine having that guy on the OL instead of the walking false start Willie Colon? All of a sudden Geno has much more protection and more time to make his reads.
I disagree. I think this is a very attractive job. 1. You have a good young defense with a great DLine which you can build around. 2. From all accounts it appears the Jets are going to have a ton of cap room next off season to help supply a new HC with all he needs. 3. If the Jets are looking for a new HC this off season it's going to be because the year was a complete failure and if thats the case the Jets are going to have a very good pick as well.
Vlad the Worthless Geno Stephen Hill Yup..... all projects. I'm sure I'm missing a guy in there somewhere. And all taken in the 2nd round after a defensive player.
Sure, but final say could just be a rubber stamp by a guy who knows nothing. Just trusting the football guys when you are nothing more than a pencil pusher.
This job is attractive for a guy who's looking for his first NFL job. The largest market, tons of exposure, can turn around a struggling franchise. Yet for a seasoned, well-known veteran HC, this job has some serious pitfalls. The most glaring is having to deal with the unpredictable Woody Johnson. Secondly, dealing with the media and fan pressure of NY. Another concern would be the FO structure and who's going to be calling the shots in terms of personnel, scouting staff, etc. I would think if the Jets want a marquee name (ie Harbaugh) then Woody's going to have to open his wallet and spend big $$$.
