The feature back in the NFL is a dying breed, replaced by committees. This, it's difficult to simply use overall yards to assess a running back when they aren't given all the carries. A much better statistic for RBs in committees is yards per carry. Ivory happens to excel in that stat, though I can understand he has durability concerns and may not be good enough to he a feature back. Still, my point still stands that he is worth a 4th rounder, especially for what we're paying him.
It is when you don't address the major flaws on your team between the money you did spend in FA and the draft. $8-10 million between CJ and Vick is the equivalent of burning money.
Either you're getting way ahead of yourself or you don't understand what a consensus is. There is more than enough debate on each of your four points to make your post completely invalid. A repeat next week may make a repost called for; even the strongest can cry "No mas!"
You need to do a little more in depth research. Decker was a good FA pick up but does anyone think he is a true number 1? Emmanuel Sanders wanted to be here. We wouldn't even meet with him. It was more important to go to the Texas Tech pro day. That's just the wide receiver position. Dexter McDougal was your savior? He was injured his entire senior season and this was not his first injury. You want to talk Patterson, listen to what other front office people said about him. Even had he not gone AWOL, he would not have started. You had Antonio Cromarte who wanted to stay. Signed for 1M with Arizona and playing like a pro bowler. Agents are talking about how Idzik talks down to them and thinks they are stupid (see the other Cromartie). How about Flowers in San Diego? Think he might look good in green and white. Why did we not look to resign Austin Howard. Yes you replaced him with his older and more penalty prone clone. Where is the depth on the O-Line. Mangold & D-Brick are both in their 8th or 9th year. Winters has been a total bust (he's the reason we lost Green Bay and imho, are on this death spiral). Look at the other signings. You have depth at running back. So let's get another one. We need a back up QB, so we spend 5M on a washed up lefty. Even before the debacle in San Diego people were saying don't look to Vick to save the season. He doesn't have much left in the tank. We will never know for real who had the final say in the draft but the fact that we didn't move back into the 3rd round and grab one of the top receivers is criminal. This was the deepest WR draft in history and we got ZERO. Jalen Saunders is the highest draft pick in the NFL that has been dropped. Out of this draft, we MIGHT see 3 or 4 players end up on the team. Amaro, Pryor and maybe Dozier and one other. Maybe McDougal makes it back but remember, he wasn't doing that well when he got hurt. He did great in the Spring but when it came to the fall, he was lost. THAT'S IT. That's criminal. And who is that on, Idzik. Rex is gone. Idzik needs to go with him.
I never said that we're a good team nor did I say that Idzik makes many good decisions. I only said that he was worth a 4th round pick we gave up (which ended up going to Miami after the Saints traded it away, to a TE named Dion Sims, who has 8 receptions in his career so far; just 2 this year, though one was a td). Your response is a red herring because you know no running back in the league is the sole reason why a team wins games (except maybe AP, though look how that's turning out). That said, the Jets were the 6th best team in the league last year in running yards and Ivory was a huge part of that. In comparison, here are a few of our recent 4th round picks: Jalen Saunders (cut) Bilal Powell (3rd stringer) Joe McKnight (cut) Dwight Lowery (traded)
You can't have top flight talent at every position. Look at the Patriots. They even traded Logan Mankins because they didn't believe they could pay him. So esp at some positions like wide receiver where there is a lot of talent you don't overpay. They did overpay for Decker who is a good player. As good as Sanders not sure but the most expensive Fa Wr who came out last year. They lost Howard who they didn't think was worth the money he asked for but signed Bruno. You don't need All Stars and first rounders at every position. But you do need good coaching something the Jets don't have. There will be a lot of injuries and a good coaching staff and organization has to be able to fill in with below average players. Other teams do but not the Jets.
Its no red herring or trick. Numbers don't lie. Ivory has never had a great season. As fans of this teams we have become so accustomed to subpar play we get excited over a great play or two. Ivory has been solid, nothing more. It's the same with Kerley. He's a solid receiver who is elevated to "good" because the offense is so inept. I'm just trying to bring a realistic perspective. Our offense is atrocious and Ivory may be the best piece of it- but that's not saying much
Yeah, you're certainly right about the offense overall. Hopefully free agency/2015 draft goes well... :/ Same old Jets.
Ivory has always been hurt in the past. Last year was reasonable healthy for him. He can't block or catch, though. My 20-20 hindsight gripe with Idzik is that he did not get a second wideout along with Decker, preferably a FA. But do not wait until Round 4 to draft them if you do not want to spend the money. Too early to rate Idzik, who was saddled with a coach he probably did not want. And as I have said before, if Pryor and Amaro become big time starters, and a Dozier or a McDougle come through, the draft was okay. It is too early to condemn this draft.
Izdik is not going to be fired.... It doesn't make sense to fire him so soon. He's going to get his coach, and hopefully spend some money this offseason. That's all we can hope for
As long as he brings in a QB, an O line, a WR and maybe some corner and safety help, he will be fine.
It's way too early to fire Idzik. What's that you say? The Jets suck? That's new and unique. Never seen that before. Seriously, relax. We knew the Jets would suck this year. We expected them to suck last year. This is gonna be a bit of a process. This is the first year we're not weighted down by Sanchez and Holme's ridiculous contracts. We have $24m in free cap space that will roll over to next year and barring some weird miracle, we should get a decent draft position.
You may not need pro bowlers at each position but show me a team with as dearth a talent base in the skill positions and in the defensive backfield. Ivory is a good back - no argument there. Decker, when healthy (and he had injury problems in Denver) is a good receiver. That's it. Everyone knew before the season started that we were very thin at WR and in the defensive backfield. Painfully and criminally thin and that is where our problems continue to this day. That is why Idzik needs to be attacked. He did very, very little to address our deficiencies during the off season.
I don't see much good about what idzik has done so far but I don't think it's fair to pass judgement on him yet. this could be a is going to get worse before it gets better type deal and we need to give his draft classes, as underwhelming as they appear atm, time to play out. it looks pretty bleak for idzik right now
