After watching the Rex presser from a couple of days ago, it is apparent that Rex thinks he's coaching for his job. He stated matter of factly that he knows this isn't a competition league, it's a win league. Earlier, when asked about the Decker hammy, he was adamant that it was Decker's decision to play as long as the training staff gave a green light. He didn't describe what a green light from the training staff actually was, but I'm guessing it's something similar to "yes sir, he can run *sideways glance* but he really should rest for a few weeks." Same thing with Milliner. Rex is going to rush every marginal player onto the field if they can play at 60%. This reeks of desperation and apparently the trainers have no chance of making him believe otherwise. This is a season that is built for a HC firing, because Rex doesn't care about anything but saving his own ass at this point. Decker won't be healthy again for the rest of the season, Milliner also likely won't, and throw in another 8-10 players nursing injuries that need more than the available amount of time provided by King Rex the Hopeful. This is already a long season, but I don't think we know the half of it yet.
I have a bad feeling you're right with the injuries Byz. With Decker, he seems to be fine, but I am very worried we'll be relying on him so much, that like you say he will never be healthy the whole season. Then I'm sure the talking heads on TGG will whine, and complain about how he isn't a #1 WR, and we wasted money on him. We are desperate for WR even with him, so my mind will not shift to that. With Dee, it does seem he is finally 100%. They already rushed him back, and then sat him a few games. I have more optimism there, but still not a ton of optimism with his health in the long run. Sunday will be huge. It's in a weird way a must win game.
I think you couldn't be more wrong about Rex. The decision was made last year when Idzik had the chance to fire him and he chose not to. If you listened to Woodys interview the other day he made it sound like unless we have an epic collapse we are going to keep this staff in tact to form "sustainable winning". I like Rex but I see signs that sometimes make me think he's just not meant to be a HC. He consistently makes the same mistakes when it comes to clock management and the team lacks discipline. I don't ever see that getting better it just continues to happen. I think the biggest issue is lack of skill play makers and I know everyone's going to say we have 20 plus million in cap space but there weren't guys in my opinion worth overpaying for just to say we addressed the problem. Sit on it and add more pieces next off season. I want to win juat as bad as the next guy but lets not be foolish with the money we finally cleared and build a team that's a pleasure watch. Overspending is what got us here in the first place.
I think you're reaching here. I think it's possible he gets fired, but I don't think that shows with these injuries. Decker has said numerous times that hammy injuries are a "tricky" thing and one day he'll feel great and the next it will be tight, which is why he is labeled a game time decision. He has practiced fully throughout the week, except one day, I believe, and he has said that he feels great, except that one day, which is why he is questionable. If he can't play, he can't play. Rex will play him if he and the trainers say he's ready. In your theory, teams like Chicago are in the same boat. Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey have both been nursing injuries, yet they keep playing. Brandon Marshall is nowhere near 100%, as we all witnessed, yet he still goes out there limp or no limp. As for Milliner, he has been sitting out lately. I could be wrong, but he sat out last game and has had all week to prepare. I'm not sure how this shows Rex is coaching for his job. Other signs, yes, but these injuries? I just don't see it.
I agree mostly with you what bothers me is that clockmanagement is something really easy to figure out for someone not emotional as Rex, so why not pass that responsability to someone else. Plus my main concern is the scouts we cant land top talent ,we even scared to draft offense high no matter how high the pick is its proven that our draft boards are not as good as lets say the Bengals , Cowboys or 49ers.
There is a theory going around that Idzik stashed that $20mil this year so he could spend it on his new HC next year. Woody says things but sometimes he says other things. He's a wily one that Woody Johnson. He loves Rex and that's the reason why Idzik doesn't have the authority to fire him. Rex keeps the Jets relevant and Woody is terrified of not being relevant circus or not. I wonder if that translated into bigger PSL sales....
I'm not sure Rex is job is on the line,If his job was def on the line why not make move to Vick?It honestly looks like Idzik set up Rex to fail .They should both be fired if it stays on this route
I used to have hamstring problems when I played ice hockey, for anyone who has never had them they can be extremely painfull at times.
Rex's job is definitely on the line. Woody said he would be evaluated at the end of the season. And unfortunately, given conflicts of interest to the OP's point, Rex may force these injured guys to play just for that reason. Our offense is night and day without Decker.
The 20M under the cap number gets thrown around daily in Idzik's face. Am I totally off base or by the time we resign Mo, Snacks and Kerley the $20M and then some will go up in fumes? Could it be, could it just be, that if we want to continue to build this team from the ground up come next year we will not be nearly as cash free as people think? So not having a big $ contract around our necks assigned to someone like DRC on a team that has much bigger needs was neither prudent nor necessary. Now, if we target a super star WR for once, an area of extreme need, then I'm all in.
Oh what an unfair NFL world. It's so sad to see where people like Rex, who non withstanding some flaws does pretty well with a team constrained by some poor personnel choices and hampered by an emphasis on PSL and jersey sells over football talent (read Tebow) can get fired on a moment notice, but owners like Woody and Snyder will go on for ever.
I'm pretty sure he's talking about having the cap space available for the next coach. It certainly makes the job more attractive when you're looking at a healthy cap situation.
I agree with the OP but will add this. Part of the reason RR is a below average HC is he has ALWAYS coached in desperation mode. From his forcing blitzes to his challenging OBVIOUSLY correct calls just because we were losing to his forcing players into the lineup and so on. I have NEVER gotten the feeling that he was in control ( because hes not), calm ( because hes not) or collected ( well, because he never has been).
If Rex only cares about his own ass then he should tell Idzik to take a hike and play Vick while he's at it. Unless he's just as delusional as Idzik vis-a-vis Geno. As to what the OP posted here: They also DO actually need Decker and Milliner though, since our WR's and CB's past both are so horrendous. So rushing them back may have nothing to do with Rex's job security per se, and it certainly has nothing to do with rushing 'marginal' players back. Both are essential to this team this year.
We'll see, I still think we have a shot to go 8-8 or 9-7. The back end of our schedule is very weak, with games against the Vikings, Titans, and all 6 divisional games. The Steelers and Chiefs are good but beatable. If we can beat up the Vikings and Titans, and pull off 5-1 in the division, that's 8 wins. If we lose to the Chargers and Broncos and are sitting at 1-5, we will be in a pretty rough spot, and things may spiral out of control. If we can pull off 7-3 over the weaker back half, that's probably both good enough for Rex to keep his job, and potentially enough to win the AFC East. We've all seen the Patriots bounce back and go from a shitty early season to a top AFC team , so it could still happen. But based on how they look, they have regressed a lot on offense.
the Jets have a very odd mix of rebuilding, while simultaneously putting the coaches on the hot seat. it's not a congruent situation, and makes little sense. then again, it could just be us speculating, and that the entire organization is onboard with the rebuild notion. if its not, and they fire the coaches, i think the rebuild takes a step back. Additionally, i believe the hot seat would immediately (and rightfully) transfer to Idzik at that point, as well as the new coach before he even starts (as the new coach's fate would likely be tied to Idzik's).. i think the org needs to get on the same page.. They all take the credit for rebuild progress together, or all take the fall together and get replaced. no finger pointing.
I don't see us going 5-1 in the division. I think we're capable of it.. but we don't play up to those both games against each opponent. i say we split with NE, split with miami, sweep buffalo. 4-2. Vikes & Titans are raiders caliber teams with inexperienced QB's... we SHOULD beat them. But then again we're the jets
