I noticed today that the Pats have the top passing defense. I haven't been keeping up with Revis but i'm wondering (from anybody with an informed perspective) how has me been performing this season? what are your thoughts on his contribution to the pats being the top passing defense - and do you feel that he (revis) is still performing at a top DB Level? pardon my grammar - meant to type EFFECT, im sure ill get blasted for it - all in a day on the jets message board
He's still Revis, he's not the #1 guy in the league anymore but he's still a top 10 corner. He's moving a touch slower from what I've seen and his age and injuries show. Messing up affect and effect? You illiterate bastard.
I live outside boston, have watched every game and listen to talk radio up here. basically, i dont think they are using revis right. they really just sit back in 3 deep zones and 2 deep zones and dont give up the big play and wait for teams to make a mistake knowing they can likely out execute them over 60 minutes. Revis has been ok. nothing spectacular. they arent manning him up on other teams #1s, asking him to bump or play man without help, or bringing a ton of blitzes asking revis to shut down one side. the media/fans want bill to be more agressive and lock revis on #1 guys. it hasnt happened yet. their #1 pass D has more to do with playing horrible pass offenses like the raiders and vikings.
Pats' fans have been down on him due to their expectations of complete shutdown corner that he showed in '09 and '10. I'd say he's in the lower half of the top 5 CBs in the game, but no longer 1 or 2.
The pats have been using this defensive technique for a long time now, that's how they managed to beat Manning so many times, force him and for that matter every QB they play against to be perfect on every drive. Bringing in Revis was not going to turn Bellichick into Rex, it does allow him some flexibility with his schemes, but nothing that would go against his primary strategy on defense of never giving up the big play.
Exactly. Bellichick has always been a guy who plays a ton of zone and lets teams dink and dunk him to death. They give up a lot of yards, but usually not that many points (and they also tend to get a lot of turnovers).
If you go by rankings from PFF and whatnot he's something like the 30th ranked CB in the league, but going by the eyeball test, he looks fine out there. The Patriots have played a mix of zone and man, probably more zone-heavy than most thought coming into the season, but they haven't played any decent offenses yet (let alone elite). From what I can see, they're tinkering around with some things (personnel and otherwise) and - I think - trying to figure out what they've got overall. When Bronwner comes back (one game remaining on his suspension) and they start playing playing tougher teams, I think the gameplans will start getting a little more aggressive, especially in situations where the other team has a clear, elite #1. Next Sunday night the Bengals come to Foxboro. Browner should be back for that one and of course Cincy has AJ Green. So I think that will be the best test and indication of where Revis is at and how the Patriots plan to use him. They were in a similar spot with the defense last year early on before the injuries started piling up. First couple of weeks were promising. So I think what's happening now is a continuation of that. The talent is there... they have former first or second rounders all over the place. Question is whether Belichick will gamble a bit and play it more aggressively, or if he sticks to the "never give up the big play" philosophy that he's stuck by for a long time.
I wonder about Darrelle. It's been a few years and multiple head coaches since somebody let him loose one-on-one for an entire game against an elite receiver. The old "Revis Island" stories are just that - old. And I don't think it's purely a scheme thing; Hoodie was _extremely_ aggressive in the secondary with Aqib Talib last year, especially in the first few games before he got injured he was playing at an All-Pro level, locking down week after week. Haven't seen that yet with Revis even once. Has he lost it?
Are you serious with this #^%@? Belichick's turn over differential on defense is off the damn charts.. WTF has Rex done but blitz and stop nothing? The vaunted Rex Ryan defense is all BS stats and no beef. So sick of this myth that he's a defensive genius while his defenses rarely stop anything and have suffered a ludicrous number of blow outs since he got here. All this while sinking 1st rounder after 1st rounder on the defensive side of the ball. Belichick doesn't want to turn into Rex. I don't even know if Tomlin would.
he needs to be back with Rex, he's playing fine in NE but they aren't using him correctly. he thrived under Rex Ryan, we will have a good shot at him in the offseason because NE ain't paying him 20M.
Something deep in my heart thinks Revis is coming back. Maybe after this year when no one will pay him the money he wants, Idzik will pick him up. Assuming Rex Ryan stays here of course.
Let's face it, Rex made Revis GREAT, borderline legend type status... because Rex played into Revis strengths, he could isolate Revis on any WR and shut them down...Revis is a great cover corner who could press any WR and have the recovery speed to make up for any mistake he did make if any. Other teams won't do that, they'll have more over the top help, or roll coverage to his side, or have him play more zone concepts, etc... Revis and Rex were a match made in heaven...
Yeah that was Revis' undoing. He could have finished his career here as a legend. He might not have earned the most money, but he would have made a lot AND had a great post football career in NY. Think Strahan status. He was into making his own Hip-Hop label after all. I am almost certain Revis would have made more money staying in NY over the long haul. Now that he bounces around teams every year and not looking as great as he once was, I don't see anything for him after he hangs up the cleats.
You people who say Rex made Revis is a joke. Rex put Revis on a island and told him to do his thing. The only thing Rex did was play to his strength.
Logan Mankins says Hi. Tom Brady the 28th worst QB for Yards/game and the only player with worse Yards/Attempt is Derek Carr. There are only 5 QBs with lower completion percentage then Tom Terrific. Geno Smith played out a better stat line against the Oakland Raiders then Tom Brady did. Let all that sink in. You can't pay a single CB on the roster 12mil and compete across the other 21 positions.
