There were several times in those first four years where Sanchez should have been benched for whoever was behind him. No particular organizational problem (including not having a respectable backup) will change that reality.
It's that AND it's common sense. Idzik's playing for tomorrow to the nth degree, Rex needs to win now. Clearly they both have different immediate goals. If Idzik wanted to win now he'd have been more agressive filling needs this offseason. Rex needs to justify his continued employment and a fourth straight playoffless season isn't going to help.
It's his biggest downfall as a coach. I honestly think he wears it as a badge of honor. But it will get him fired if Geno doesnt make big improvements and its sad to see cause I think Rex is a good HC.
Their individual short term goals are irrelevant to the discussion at hand. What is relevant is that one guy is the head coach, and by definition, is responsible for which players play. If you are going to seriously suggest that the general manager is deciding who plays and who doesn't, then you need a hell of a lot more evidence than vague, nondescript statements made in an ESPN radio interview. I assure you, your "common sense" isn't particularly convincing. It sounds like lame excuse-making for Rex to me.
He's good, but I think the Jets need someone knowledgeable on both sides of the ball. It's tough to find those coaches. Only a select few I would want Rex gone over.
Like you said those coaches are hard to find. Harbaugh is the best one who would probably be available but thats highly unlikely at best.
I'd swap Jim Harbaugh for Rex Ryan. He's losing that team over in San Francisco but the guy knows his shit.
Why the hell would Harbaugh pick here to come of all destinations? He will have the pick of the litter. Don't see him ever even considering this hot mess.
When Rex was loyal to Sanchez he had reason to be, the guy was part of a winning team and he was a top ten pick. His loyalty to Geno is misplaced, Geno was a second round pick that should have fallen further, the jets tried to catch lighting in a bottle because they had a chance to draft Russell Wilson and they screwed up. Now they are hoping that Geno end up being their RW, and he is not. Geno is owed nothing as a second round pick. MS on the other hand earned the benefit of the doubt as a top pick and after what he helped his team do. If Rex is not smart enough to see the differences, then it speaks volumes of his inability to be a discerning HC and he should be replaced.
The thing is Harbaugh wants to have control over personnel decisions. And I doubt Woody is ready to fire Idzik. Another guy I'd like is Tomlin if he is let go of this season.
- $$$ - Say in roster and draft decisions. - New York - Plenty of cap space and probably a high draft pick. Swap Rex with Harbaugh and you have a more well balanced team in my opinion.
He also never had an actual guy who could come in and play over Sanchez. Brunell was a 40 year old man and McElroy stunk. Vick has had legit NFL success and is still young enough to come in and play. Obviously the question with Vick is durability.
That's true too...Sanchez did get results and had big playoff performances. All Geno did was had a decent December last year when we were out of it.
