There isn't an organization in the NFL that doesn't let its head coach decide who starts at quarterback. It just doesn't happen. Sure, Idzik wants Geno to get a chance to develop. But, Rex is ultimately the guy making the call. You have nothing other than baseless speculation to suggest otherwise. The bottom line is, Rex is loyal to his players to a fault. He always has been. He was the exact same way with Sanchez.
This team has a problem with turnovers, is Vick going to be the cure to that? He's a turn over machine himself.
When Rex was asked by Michael Kay why he didn't simply name a starter last season and kept up a charade when it was obvious Geno was starting (after Sanchez's injury), he slipped up and admitted 'I don't know'. That tells me all I need to know about who's giving the orders.
Of course . . . of course. But, benching a player who isn't performing is also about holding players accountable for their mistakes. I always felt one huge mistake rex made with Sanchez was never holding him accountable for his ineptitude early in his career. He chose to encourage him and pump him full of hot air after every mistake and every disappointing performance. I just don't that type of unadulterated coddling makes players better in the long run.
Well Rex held Dee Milliner accountable multiple times last year so that doesn't even wash. And Saunders got thrown in the doghouse fast enough after his punt return fumble. He didn't want to do it with Sanchez for already stated reasons.
Couldn't that just be indicative of a head coach who doesn't know what to do? Couldn't that just mean Rex is conflicted? Or maybe just in over his head? Your interpretation of an innocuous IDK is that the Jets are letting their GM decide who starts on Sundays? Really?
rex is a defensive guru. he's very comfortable benching an under performer on that side of the ball. he doesn't know dick about offense, admittedly. problem is ... he's supposed to be a head coach.
Rex needed to be fired the second after he said that. I just don't get how a team can preach competition and the best player plays, and yet force the fans Sanchez and then Smith, the 2 worst qb's in the NFL...

Nah, Rex has been pumping Milliner up (as he does with every other player he coaches) since he was drafted. There hasn't been any change there. And those "Stated reasons" weren't good enough. Yeah, he didn't have a serviceable back up. It doesn't matter. You have to bench a young quarterback who turns it over without a regard for the football. You have to hold guys accoutnable. Rex's eternal answer to his players repeatedly making inexcusable mistakes is to encourage, encourage, and encourage. He's a cheerleader.
Well I agree Sanchez should have been held accountable during certain games, but at what point was he not the best option to actually start a game in his first four years here? That's an organizational problem as much as it's a Rex problem, that there was never anyone close. Ironically they had a guy that could have fit the bill in Stanton but he got streeted when Woody made googoo eyes for Tebow.
This doesn't tell me much of anything. If a vague, innocuous statement such as this one somehow tells you that the head coach of the new york jets isn't the one deciding who starts at quarterback for his football team, then good for you. I see no logical reason to arrive at such a bold conclusion.
