Why does everything with you com down to being a homer? I've said coutless times, if there is a QB available in the draft for the Jets, I'll cut bait right now. Its possible for someone to disagree with you without being a homer, especially when he is citing relevant statistics. His yards per attempt are the same, its true. It would be great if it was higher. But if he keeps improving his TD/INT/Completion%, than his yards per attempt can stay the same for all I care. But again we clearly have different opinions that wont be changed. I dont value Yards/attempt nearly as much as you do. Its no big deal.
Where in the post i was responding to did you quote any stats or other objective measures? Nowhere. That is what i was responding to. ypa is no big deal? Alrighty then. You've made your "point", even if it is laughable. And I did acknowledge marginal improvement in TD% and Int%. The problem is it is only marginal improvement. Here's the thing for others here. Smith was awful last year, his rookie year. Identifying slight improvement in a Qb's sophomore year is to be the absolute minimum expected. But is slight improvement from a level of performance that was so woeful enough to keep him as the Jets' starting Qb? That is what this discussion of Smith's perceived improvement is all about. How much improvement is the minimum to be seen as acceptable to go forward with Smith? That it the real question here.
I never said YPA was no big deal. I said if his TD-INT and his Completion% ratio continues to get better I'm not concerned with his YPA. Geno's problem is turnovers. If he can limit those by having a slightly lower Y/A than thats cool with me. I'm not giving up on Geno quite as early as you, its ok to have different opinions on a player. It doesnt make you, or me, or anyone a homer or less inteligent fan. I think its fair to end this here. Any kind of discussion with you on this board seems to eventually disolve into childish arguments. We had a mostly nice discussion, no need to go any further with it. We have our own opinions and thats cool. Time to enjoy the weekend and hopefully a Jets win.
If you have anything positive to say about the Jets you're automatically a homer who's defending the new regime to Blocker dude. Just like when someone can understand and rationalize not spending our entire cap this offseason they're automatically kissing the front office's ass.
You never know when things are suddenly going to click. All it takes is a couple of different play calls in the red zone and the Jets have another TD or two. All it takes is Geno knowing when to pull the ball down or throw it away a couple of times and the opponents have a TD or two less. That's a win or two that were there for the taking and that the various errors took away. It's clear that Geno is making fewer errors than last year at this point. Through 3 last year he had 7 TO's in 214 offensive plays and had been sacked 9 times. This year he has 5 TO's in 208 plays and has been sacked 7 times. It's incremental progress but it is progress. He's making 25% fewer really damaging plays than he did as a rookie.
The sample size is too small to make that determination at this point IMO. There have been many plays that he was lucky not to have turned the ball over so far. I know that happens to all QB's, but things generally tend to even out over the course of a season.
Agreed. 3 games isnt enough. He's already had dropped INT's and dropped TD's. If he continues this trend over the course of the year, we'll get a good view of where he is. The improved numbers are definitely nice to see, but dont paint the entire picture just yet.
Again if you want to cease this discussion, fine. But the relevant question remains whether Smith is showing, will show as the season progresses, not merely some progress. He must show more than merely slight progress. I am also not sure it is fair to say I have given up on Smith. Yes, I have a substantial concern that he is likely to fail in trying to improve enough to justify being the Jets starting Qb going forward. And that in the short run he might benefit from being pulled if hte turnovers continue. And that Vick is probably the better Qb right now, to win now. But I have not reached any firm conclusions that he cannot improve enough. If I gave that impression I did not mean to.
Of course. "The Geno Apologists" are treated like they aren't real Jet fans and are treated like the Tebow fans. 2 years into the Idzik GM reign and if you show support or patience(Yes patience, something hard to find on this board), you're a "FO homer". They try and use that to dismiss or discount any potential argument against their statement when it only makes them look silly in the process.
http://www.ganggreennation.com/2014/9/26/6847175/geno-smiths-slower-trigger Geno's biggest problem throwing late and missing opps.
If the Jets lose Sunday, Genos time is limited. He needs to pull the team up, not drag it down. Either we would switch to Vick in San Diego, or watch our season go to 1-4, then the Broncos, 1-5, then the Patriots, 1-6..... =/
Nonsense. Merely showing patience does not make one an FO Homer. It requires ignoring problems, assuming the best regarding any actions or lack thereof by the FO, and too much deference to people who really have no track record of success. I have not given up on Idzik by any means. I also don't get equating treatment of Smith's apologists with the Tebow fans. That's a straw man argument.
I love how Jet fans label each other this way, it's pretty funny if you ask me. Support something, or someone and you are a homer! Homer. Everyone here is a Jet Homer.
Every team has problems when you finish constructing a team, that's the beauty of the cap. You have to let go of guys for free agency and hope to replace them by cheaper means. Or at least limit the damage. Idzik inherited a team that was filled with cap room nightmares and a team that lacked depth because the previous GM did not value draft picks and traded them away to gamble on a 1-2 year window, which is almost never a recipe for success. I did not expect him to get the ship righted in year 2 and he did drop the ball on getting a CB even if the position got snake bitten early in camp but people forget this job was not highly coveted by interested GMs, including guys like Caldwell and Ross turning down the job due to cap problems and because of having to hang onto Rex. You go out of your way to mention "The Geno Apologists" every other post it feels like. What does the namecalling prove? It makes your argument look bad even if you might be making some valid points because its tough to take seriously. I think there's a thing between the guys who have been more critical on Geno that the people defending Geno just defend Geno and don't care about the team or its success, which is BS which is why I bring up the Tebowmania stuff where those were actual people who could care less about the Jets and just want Tebow to shine and play.
Speaking for myself I don't say that some, many or all of Smith Fans don't care about the team's success. Never said that. Some portion have said they are willing to sacrifice this season to let Smith develop, or some variation of that position. I find that a concern, since I think if the FO had made the right moves, if Vick was the Qb and stayed healthy, the Jets could be a playoff team this year. The point is something is being lost by letting Smith drive the bus. That and that I am far from convinced any amount of reasonable deference to him will make him an acceptable talent. I wonder on what basis such an undue deference occurs. Also for me and to be specific I try not to use first names of the players since I find that can be confusing. Sure, no one else on the team has a first name Geno, but I have been following this as a general rule for some time. THe exception is I call our OC Marty because his last name is so long and, frankly, difficult to spell. Heh.
Name one team that dumped their season for a second year Qb who played like shit his rookie year, and had a quality Qb on the bench that they did not play.
