If this offense can stop leaving points on the field, this could be a playoff team. The defense was never the big concern.
Just because we currently lead the league in sacks, that doesn't mean we couldn't use or don't need a speed rusher.
Both are factors of the offense giving up field position. If you don't have to go far to score, it's hard to get yards but easy to get points.
What makes our secondary "so bad" exactly? We're #9 against the pass. Watch other teams go against decent qbs, by any standard our secondary has been average to above average.
actually, not really. Blitzing usually serves to force the quarterback to get the ball out of his hands as quickly as possible (from a defensive perspective, hopefully before he really wants to). Generally, quarterbacks are determined to get the ball out of their hands especially fast when facing a blitzing team. None of Rex's Jets teams have ever lead the league in sacks for an entire season.
So our terrible CB's really arent playing that bad. Oakland is nothing special, but Chicago and Green Bay can both sling it around. And we did very well against Chicago's passing attack, and mediocre against Green Bay. I would love to see how we would have done against Green Bay had we not put Milliner in. Him and Pryor got torched pretty badly that game. I havent gone back and watched it, but I imagine Green Bay was holding the entire second half. I remember a couple instances that were obvious and not called. After all the pressure we got on Rodgers the first 10 minutes, I find it hard to believe they shut our line down completely. But thats neither here nor there. I think the only thing stopping us from being an elite offensive team this year, is turnovers and perhaps passing the ball too much. We have the OLine and RB's to be the best running team in the NFL, but we arent committing to it as much as I would like. And I dont think we're doing it correctly. 10 carries for Ivory isnt enough. CJ2K runs between the tackle shouldnt be happening at all. He needs outside runs and screen passes. More Powell as well. He is a damn good back. Jack of all trades kind of back. I think the Jets could easily be 3-0 right now. I think they have a fantastic foundation. Its just built around controlling the clock and not giving the ball away. Unfortunately, we have a QB who gives the ball away a lot. I saw a stat that in games where Geno doesnt turn it over we're 4-0. Small sample size for sure, but something to strive for.
Might be those 7 TD's we've given up already thru the air. It might be the 100 Passer Rating opposing Qb's have going against us. Even the 60% completion rate gives reason to wonder. Teams do not fear the Jets secondary when they know they can complete 6 out of every 10 passes. They actually pass until their Wr's need a break. Running against this Jets team is playing into our strength so why would any OC (Schotty not withstanding) do that when its so much easier to pass against them? that #9 ranking is deceiving. Look for that to drop a bit by the time we get past Manning, Brady, Stafford, Rivers. Yeah, that #9 ranking is misleading. We really get our first break in October against the Bills. After that, its still not a cakewalk. I would be shocked if the Secondary finishes in the top 16 by season's end.
We only gave up 1 true deep completion that I can remember against the Bears, which I believe was Allen covering Jeffrey down the left sideline. In general our entire defense played very well against the Bears. We played very well against the Riaders, and played well for over half the game against Packers. I'm not saying we are going to beat the Lions or absolutely have a great season, but it's pretty clear people are over reacting to how our secondary has played. Our front 7 has been outstanding. What's the story with Mo's injury? I haven't really paid attention this week.

Some decent points but the 60% completion thing is silly. 26 of the 32 starting QB's have a 60% completion. It doesnt mean what it once did.
The Bears have a very solid set of receivers, but their top two wideouts were both hurt. Marshall even had a trip during the game to the locker room. Their winning score came against Adams, who should not even be on the field, and wouldn't be if the Jets were as deep as they should be at cb. Plus I wonder if the defenders of the secondary were in the bathroom when Jeffreys caught that critical third down pass being defended by Allen, who was totally out of position given the down and distance and where Jeffreys was on the field. I am sure that if the Bears receivers were in better shape they would have had production that would have driven down the team stats for the Jet secondary. Just the week before Nelson gashed them for 209 yards. I don't recall the last time any single receiver put up that kind of game against the Jets. Unfortunately that performance shows what a healthy and capable receiver can do against the Jets this year.
Babin looks like a great pickup so far. Throw him in their more often. I just hope Mo is ok cuz he was cursing like a motherfucker when he went down .I herd him screaming Fuuuuuuck so loud that it went thru the TV set.
To be fair like 80 yards of his 209 came off one reception against a injured Milliner, and from probably the best QB in the league. Overall, they haven't been dreadful. A weakness definitely, but not the worst in the league. Hopefully Milliner is able to fully recover at some point this season.
