Allen is a solid CB in the bend but don't break mode. If Milliner is really a #1 CB the Jets are ok at that position at this point because Walls is definitely a decent #3.
Allen covered Martellus Bennett a couple of times on Monday night. He's going to get looks at SS and probably at the spur when Rex decides to use the 46 nickel.
First game against Oakland they werent really tested much, because the rookie QB was throwing short passes to deal with the blitz. GB game, the secondary was atrocious, letting Jordy Nelson run circles around them. The Bears game, not as bad, but they still gave up a lot. Part of it is on Rex too, for not being able to adopt to his talent, but overall, the secondary just isnt very good right now. We can hope AA and Pryor get better with experience.
I tend to put the Green Bay game more on Rex Ryan's lack of adjustments. He was insistent on the blitz which means that the corners have to back off. If the corners have to back off the short stops, curls and flat routes are wide open. Jordy Nelson routinely pinned the corner to the inside and caught great balls towards the sideline because it was open. We got hit in spots, but ailments or not they kept the 6'3"+ receivers & tightends of the Bears success to the minimum. You said they have been atrocious which is simply not true. Without a speed rusher around the edge the secondary has to hold the coverage longer to get sacks after the power rushers initiate their moves. It's not like we have a guy that can come screaming off the edge in 3 seconds and none of the sacks outside of the jailbreak blitz up the middle came quickly.
What this says to me is there are no moves to make to backfill the CB spot. No one is out there. Not on any PS, not even sitting at home eating popcorn. Idzik is gonna roll with the people we have on the roster presently. AA is gonna be the the CB the rest of the season because there are no viable alternatives available. Not at Idzik's price point. Looks like next year's draft, we'll be in the market for yet another CB early among other things.
I think it's pretty safe to say that Tanny would be trading away draft currency yesterday for a cornerback bandaid. Probably also safe to say that Idzik doesn't consider that an option. The day that Idzik pulls a surprise trade, I will probably shart a dragstrip in my tagless Hanes. As far as available corners sitting around twiddling their thumbs, I think we exhausted that resource already.
I said the secondary was atrocious in the GB game, which it was (see the Nelson td run against Milliner/Pryor?), but there were really bad moments in the Bears game as well. Like when the Bears TE caught the first TD, our secondary just completely broke down and lost him. Jeffrey pretty much dominated, and if Marshall was healthier, he probably would've done better as well.
Allen has saftey speed ,he isn't a cornerback. There's a reason he was a saftey in the NFL not to mention a former LB.Only on the Jets due we make guys change there positions with $21mill in cap space.I have faith in him at corner until I dont
How many touchdowns did Bennett have on MNF? 2. Do we know how many times did Allen really cover Bennett? Bennett is a very underrated TE in this league. With Marshall pretty much non-existent man would have been nice to see Allen on Bennett a little bit more to off-set those TDs. He didn't do much if anything against Jeffrey. At this juncture, Ebron who hasn't done shit all yr might have a breakout game.
Allen is way too slow to be a cornerback. Horrible move long term but we have no choice for the time being.
...and once again, we will be stuck drafting more defense and leave more glaring holes at WR. The cycle with this team and lack of playmakers never ends....
i have no problems with this. cb is harder to fill than safety so if he ends up being a decent cb it fills a larger hole than if he has to move back to ss. also he is better than walls plus he can still cover t.e.'s when it is needed. this keeps the best players playing while also allowing flexibilty within the roster. win/win
When i first read this I totally agreed w/ the OP. But then i thought back to AA's entire career. He's never fully earned a starting safety position & been able to keep it.Thats true both next to & replacing Landry. He's an athlete. But he struggles w/ alignment & communication.Rex has politely referenced it in several press conferencesThose are necessities in Rex's scheme. AA is just a flat out football player. At corner he doesnt have to think on his feet quite as much. He'll never be a shut down but he can match up with size, tackle, attack the football & plaster. Those are great qualities in a #2 type corner. And nobody said he cant still cover guys like Gronk if needed..
That's where having rangy center-fielding safety to provide help over the top comes in. Unless Pryor develops into that we don't have one.
Allen doesn't have fantastic speed, certainly not elite CB speed. He does have enough speed to play the position though, and he has good man coverage ability. If he is our #2 CB, that's really not the end of the world, although he definitely shouldn't be covering guys like Mike Wallace or elite speed receivers. What it comes down to is we need Milliner back, sooner rather than later. Landry is a FA at the end of the year, so they'll probably move Allen back to safety during the offseason and address corner in some other way. With a full season under his belt, Pryor will likely take over Landry's role.
To put Allen's speed in context, he ran between a 4.58 and a 4.67 in his various workouts for NFL scouts prior to the draft. Joe Haden ran between a 4.57 and a 4.62. Richard Sherman ran between a 4.56 and a 4.64. Speed is an important factor for a CB but it is not the be-all and end-all that determines whether or not a CB can play in the NFL. The skills that determine that are more related to the CB's ability to mirror his man and read him in man coverage and to read the play correctly when he's in a zone. Tackling is big also. Stopping your guy after he catches the ball underneath but before he reaches the 1st down marker is very important.
