It's just theoretical, and I pretty much did this as an example of how much we have available to improve the team by next season. I picked Suh because I want an elite pass rushing presence, and I'm not sure what outside pass-rusher will be available for a similar cost. I suppose there's a chance Brian Orakpo will become available, but he will absolutely cost a lot more. Anyway, we can spend less on an individual players and add more depth in lots of ways if we want to, all I'm saying is we can add a lot. I'm not even petitioning for Suh, just defending the the fact that he would be a great addition to the defense should he somehow become part of it.
I wonder if Greg Hardy's future earning potential has taken a hit in light of his off the field trouble(s). We could have had him on the cheap like Carolina for 4 years had we drafted him in 2010. I wanted him in the 2nd which after the draft appeared as though I way over valued him since he lasted till the 6th round. Looking back now in hindsight, I would trade our entire 2010 draft of Wilson, Ducasse, McKnight and Conner for Hardy. Greg Hardy OLB/DE 2nd Rd??? Thread by: legler82, Mar 6, 2010
I wouldn't say you overvalued him, even at the time. I'm guessing most scouts saw the same thing you did, but were probably privy to a lot more insight about his character concerns. I'm not saying I wouldn't have been happy to have him on the team, but I always thought he was kind of a douche based on the way he talks to the media, and now with the whole scandal I'd bet a whole bunch of money he won't be on the Jets next year even if he comes cheap.
Yeah it really did. Honestly so did our 2008 and 2009 drafts. We had two great drafts in 2006 and 2007, netting us D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Brad Smith, Leon Washington, Darrelle Revis, and David Harris. A pretty good collection of playmakers out of 2 years, especially since we didn't have many picks in 2007. There were a number of decent backups and role players drafted in those 2 years as well, including Eric Smith and Chansi Stuckey. The only real disappointment out of those years was Kellen Clemens. We followed that up with Vernon Gholston, Mark Sanchez, Shonn Greene, Kyle Wilson, and Vlad Ducasse all big disappointments out of the first 3 rounds. Even the later round players were disappointing, with Joe McKnight and John Conner not working out. 2010 was particularly bad, because at least we got Dustin Keller out of 2008 and Matt Slauson out of 2009. 2011 marked a big turn around though, since Muhammad Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, Bilal Powell, and Jeremy Kerley all turned out to be players. 2012 wasn't too bad either, with Quinton Coples, DeMario Davis, and Antonio Allen all looking good, and Josh Bush sticking around. Too bad for Tannenbaum that he didn't get to stick around and watch those last two years develop, but I guess that's what you get for 3 drafts in a row like 2008, 2009 and 2010.
You're daydreaming, and there's nothing wrong with that. The DL you propose would be nothing less than legendary. Hell, with that DL, Babin and Coples would probably be Pro Bowlers. Players come available all the time. And when a team that wants to take the next step has the money, they can pull the trigger. Nobody in their right mind thought that DeSean Jackson and Revis and Talib and DeMarcus Ware would all be available in the same off-season, but there you have it. Things happen in this league and the teams that have the ppt of holds and the right situation can capitalize. The problem is that we need to be in the right situation. Not like the Redskins. Like the teams that want to contend. Maybe Geno figures things out. If he doesn't, pay the existing talent and roll into the next season. And hope that your GM isn't really a fraud. I don't think he is. But right now, you either need to make your decision on the young gun... or go gun shopping.
I like your plan only if doesn't include Rex. The jets just lost 2 very winnable games and with the remaining schedule I see no way under Rex they make the playoffs this year. Your thread is an example of the type of approach we have been relegated to with with Rex--wait till next year. As someone posted yesterday, jets fans are unfortunately getting used to mediocrity under Rex, and anytime an organization accepts mediocrity they never get better. It's like being a "lottery team' in the NBA. The same loser teams are almost always in the lottery.
Yeah, I did. This season is going to tell a lot if they don't panic (see: Milliner, Decker) about their chances to win individual games. Hell, Geno could be an answer. Maybe not THE answer, but many teams have gone the distance without a legend behind the center. I'm patient, just like you are. But we need rational thinking when it comes to the offense. I really don't think that Maclin is the rational answer to the WR headache. And there just isn't the level of talent at WR to find the easy answer at that position, although we can pray that a Jeffrey level talent falls there. Idzik may have a plan, but it didn't land that type of talent at wide receiver in the third day of the draft, at least it didn't immediately.
I've thought the same thing myself about Maclin, but I'm really not sure who is. I wouldn't be completely opposed to drafting a WR in the first this year, although I'd really like to draft a future LT in the first. If we don't get a WR in the first, I'm not really into the idea of starting a rookie we take in the second or lower, so is there another FA you think would be a better option?
I can't really look at the FA list seriously. I have in the past and have watched that list turn into a nugget of talent. At this point, although it's interesting to hypothesize, how realistically can you really look at it? You're correct that patience is needed. Past that, what can we realistically pay attention to? It's nothing but daydreams.
I could go so many places with this, but I'll settle for saying that I hope you don't use the Marty Mornhinweg playbook of lovemaking, because she'll get tired of you running up the middle for an entire game.
Fake a screen and use the end around. Defenders will fail to cover the back end, your uncovered ball carrier will sneak right in.
Refs probably won't call illegal hands to the face on this play as they will be focused on the line of scrimmage.
