It wasn't just that last drive - Ivory was by far the most successful back playing in the first 2.5 quarters and then can't find his way off the bench. CJ0K is run between the tackles where he is not suited to play. It was awful personnel and play calling pure and simple.
How no one has pressed the issue of Rex's headset being tuned to the defensive channel during that Packer game and not in communication with MM on 4 down and the game on the line is beyond me. I'm not bearing the FIRE REX drum but if you watch Rex's presser after the game or maybe it was a day or so after , I can't remember now, Rex would never admit to it and you can tell he knew he'd be chastised for it . Further proof that Rex is a DC in HC clothing.
Maybe it's just me, but Rex seems to have this WTF look whenever the offense is on the field. This may just be because he's completely in shock when something goes wrong. But I think he is honestly confused with some of the plays MM is running.
I think this year proves that Rex doesn't get much say so in players. If he did we would have some CB's so take that Rex picks the players bullshit elsewhere.
Rex is still a terrible Head Coach, but the defense can't be blamed on him. Idzik gave him a terrible secondary to work with. Both need to be fired at the end of the season. It's a mess. The Rex supporters boggle my mind. The team is outcoached on a weekly basis. I loved 2009 and 2010, but sadly, that was a long time ago.
Amazing how myoptic and wrong some people can be. Rex is doing miracles in defense with a depleted secondary and a couple of aging OLB against arguably some of the best QBs in the league. Year in and year out the defense plays good enough to win. We do little to help him by bringing in some real talent to that side of the ball in free agency. We have some really promising young players but not quite there yet. Since he arrived here he has been without a starting caliber QB, a patched up, on and off, decimated and less that acceptable WR corps and some gapping holes at the OL. I think he has done an admirable job and bringing in MM was exactly what he needed. But you will not open up the playbook and win many games with a QB that is still making rookie mistakes and unable to play at a starting level. Its not coaching but talent that is costing us games. Mistakes, turn overs and poor execution by players that are still unproven. Couple that with some disgraceful and eggregious errors by the ref that its making life for the Jets a bitch GB and Chicago did not beat us...our own mistakes in execution did. Stop blaming the coaches when we dont enoughe talent to pull it off.
I feel like fans don't even watch the games. LAJet's post is right, but blame DOES go to Rex. As a Head Coach, he is an embarrassment. He is a great defensive coordinator, but that is not his job in New York. The Jets make so many mistakes game to game, there is plenty of blame to go around. And it always starts from the top.
I was with you until the bold. I'm sorry but you can't get to 2 AFCCG w/o a "starting caliber QB", let alone 1 AFCCG. Even if you had a team with the best defensive players from the 85 Bears, 00 Ravens and 02 Bucs, you quality play from your QB to make it far in the playoffs. No one runs the wishbone in the NFL and you can't Wildcat your way to a ring.
I agree. Marty is catching a lot of shit here for Smith's poor play, and not just from the Smith Fans since there's also the everybody sucks segment of the fanbase. But for the historical record Andy Reid was the HC in Philly who is an excellent coach, had great if not the ultimate success, but who basically wore out his welcome. He went to KC and turned around a moribund franchise. (Yes they've had injuries since and are struggling, but they did win big in Miami, so there's that.) So the FO replaces Andy with Chip Kelly, who obviously was not going to use an OC he inherited from the prior regime. He wanted to run his style of O, and is basically the OC there anyway. That left Marty out. He was not run out of town, no matter how mad people are with him for the Chicago game.
My take on the subject of this thread starts with me being in the middle on Ryan. He does some good things, to be sure, and one must acknowledge them to be fair, and have any perspective. I thought he should have been fired after 12, but not after 13, when he did a great job taking a 4 win team to .500, albeit with a large measure of luck. And most of all in his favor is I am convinced he is saddled with a roster with critical holes in it, and that is not of his choice. He does sometimes make me wince in his post game pressers and the occasional crazy shit reported about what he said. There's the embarrasing stuff like his tatoo and what it seems to mean. But what is making me tempted to say he should go is something I concede I don't know he is fully responsible for, and that is if Smith continues to start. In short Ryan's reasons for continuing to start Smith are getting to be harder and harder to agree with. At some point he's going to have to decide, or has decided already, that he is either going to succeed or fail with Smith. And at this point the latter looks more likely than the former. Woody did not hold Ryan to that standard when it came to Sanchez, and even after the awful 12 season not only did not dictate Ryan's firing, but required his new GM to accept retaining Ryan as a condition of taking the job. Maybe Woody's loyalty will still be there going forward even if Smith continues to falter. But maybe not. The key for me is the extent to which the decision to continue to play Smith is on Ryan, the alternative being it is someone else's, presumably Idzik's call. But if Smith has another game or two without real improvement, and Ryan still wants to stick with Smith, Then I think Ryan should be fired.
Of course it's not just the refs, but they directly cost us 14 points in 2 weeks. Turnovers probably cost us more. Our offense is ranked 8th and defense ranked 2nd. With that type of production the Jets should not be a mediocre team. It's just costly QB mistakes killing us every time. It's not Rex. Geno needs to take the next step.
Donovan McNabb was a very good QB, arguable top 5 QB back then during his time who catches a lot of shit for not winning big games(Its Romo levels of absurd). Mike Vick had 1 strong year when the NFL got caught by surprise with the speed Vick still contained post Prison followed by some bad luck with injuries and some backbreaking turnovers he would have. McNabb was doing very good if not great long before Marty came to the Eagles organization, Marty did not make him. Its more about those 2 being unheralded than Marty being some QB guru. He's a flawed OC. He knows what he's doing and there are some good tendencies with the guy but this guy isn't some magnificent signal caller. Andy Reid who loved the guy didn't bring him over to KC.
Sean Payton is a promoted offensive coordinator. How is his D doing this year....with Rex's twin running it by the way? Its all about the talent....
You HAVE to blame Rex and MM for their in-game failures from the shitty play calling to the crazy number of penalties. That is all discipline, or lack thereof. The buck stops with the coaches, bottom line. Anything else is just excuses for people who can't stand to see Rex Ryan ever criticized. He hasn't gotten the job done going on 4 years now. FACT. If this team continues to make undisciplined mistakes that is on Rex as he's in charge. This team makes the same stupid mistakes they made 4 years ago under his watch. That is a direct reflection of Ryan's inability to lead his troops. The ultimate definition of insanity is this.
