I understand why many people are upset with Idzik, because it's clear we need significantly more offensive talent and better secondary talent. The question however is were you willing to deal with a less than whole team this year to establish a true core of drafted talent by 2015 and accumulate cap space, or do you demand more talent this year with less options come 2015. I know how I feel, so I'm willing to take some tough losses in the meantime. We have about $54 Million in projected cap space in 2015. That's enough to do basically whatever we want, and I mean whatever. We take a hard look at what our drafted players have looked like so far, and we add to it. So, here's a little what if scenario. What if we: -Extend Muhammad Wilkerson to around $9 million per year, 6 years. -Use a first round tender on RFA Damon Harrison. -Sign FA Ndamukong Suh to play NT for about $9 million per year, 4 years. -Sign FA Byron Maxwell to play CB for about $7 million per year, 3 years. -Sign David Harris back to play MLB for about $3 million, 1 year. -Sign Leger Douzable back to play DE for about $750 thousand, 1 year. -Sign Michael Vick back to play QB for about $3.5 million, 1 year. -Sign Jeremy Maclin to play WR for about $8 million, 4 years. If someone wants to sign Damon Harrison and surrender their first round, pick, great. If not, we put him on the trade block for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Assume we get a 3rd. Draft LT of the future in round 1. Draft big time WR in round 2. Draft MLB of the future in round 3. Draft CB in round 3. Draft RB of the future in round 4. Draft OLB in round 5. Draft DT in round 6. Draft P in round 7. Highly hypothetical, but if we were to do this, our depth chart would round out looking like: QB: Geno Smith, Michael Vick RB: Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson, 4th rounder FB: Tommy Bohanon WR: Eric Decker, Jeremy Maclin, 2nd rounder, Shaq Evans, Jalen Saunders, Greg Salas TE: Jace Amaro, Jeff Cumberland, Zach Sudfeld LT: D'Brickashaw Ferguson LG: Brian Winters, Oday Aboushi C: Nick Mangold, Dalton Freeman RG: Breno Giacomini, Dakota Dozier RT: 1st rounder LE: Muhammad Wilkerson, Leger Douzable NT: Ndamukong Suh, 6th rounder RE: Sheldon Richardson, TJ Barnes LOLB: Calvin Pace, Trevor Reilly ILB: David Harris, 3rd rounder ILB: DeMario Davis, Jeremiah George ROLB: Quinton Coples, Jason Babin, IK Enemkpali CB: Dee Milliner, Byron Maxwell, Dexter McDougle, 3rd rounder, Darrin Walls S: Calvin Pryor, Antonio Allen, Jaiquwan Jarrett, Josh Bush In 2016 the MLB would take over for Harris, and we could cut or restructure D'Brickashaw Ferguson. This would instantly add to our pass rush (Suh), WR corps (Maclin and 2nd rounder), CB (Maxwell and 3rd rounder) and OL (1st rounder). Of course the salaries are completely estimations and may not be right. Would people be mad about this?
Trade Harrison? Huh? Why? I would like to see Maclin or somebody get signed, but we also need a big WR for that red zone, let's see how the off season plays out, still gotta long way to go.
Trade Harrison because we would have Ndamukong Suh, a superior player in every way playing NT. Harrison is a restricted FA so it makes sense for us to control him by using the 1st round tender, but we could then trade him for draft assets assuming we signed Suh, a beastly interior run stopper and pass rusher. Could you imagine Suh in Rex's defense?
sorry but suh is not a nt for this scheme nor would suh ever sign with a team to play nt..it would waste all of his talent.. plus the interior of the line is were we are the strongest…money needs to be spent on the O and the corners
No way we trade Snacks, and sign Suh, and Maclin. That's a little Madden like there, but I get your point overall. We will sign a few players, though probably not huge names. We will lock up our guys, and probably go into next year with enough cap space to make a quarter of the board lose their shit again.
because he is not a 3-4 nose tackle.. nose tackles don't make the same money as a dominate 4-3 dt would. 3-4 nose tackles are thick lineman who eat up space, that just not what he is
if we ever signed suh..his best spot would be the end in the base d and inside (dt) on passing downs… but those spots are taken by mo and richardson
Except that he would not play exclusively NT, he would be playing in Rex's hybrid multi-look scheme. He, Richardson, and Wilkerson would be moving around the line in 3 DL looks, and because of Suh's talent he would still be pass rushing from the NT position much like Kris Jenkins did back in 2008/2009, completely dominating Centers. When We were playing a 3-4 look, Suh and Richardson would move around and play 3 technique a lot, with Coples and Wilkerson coming off the edge. I think Suh would be pumped to be playing in a completely dominant defense like Rex's.
Everything certainly points to 2015 being a major turning point for this franchise. This young team is learning some hard lessons right now..but hopefully they'll learn how to put together 4 quarters. Next year will be about the window dressing..finally. Jets are elite on the DL & A- on line w/ a potential upgrade coming w/ one of the young guards stepping in for Colon. They'll have some questions at the strong side of front 7 w/ Pace/Harris.But other than that it will be all about outside skill. Both offense & defense. There's no way around it at this point.
This sounds like the Wilpons "we got Harvey, deGrom,Wheeler, Niese, Syndegard, Montero, Gee, Colon, Lagares is going to be awesome, Flores looks like a player, Wright will be healthy, that Den Deckers got some spunk, Tejada turned the corner, a Murph is a professional hitter, Granderson can't suck again, Josh Satin is just scratching the surface, Campbell looks like a future all star and how about that Duda?" "Next year is OUR year." _
Suh is only barely undersized compared to traditional NT's, but he is outrageously powerful for his size. He is a unique talent that I believe would be an excellent addition to Rex's versatile and multi-look defense.
The thing is there are only 3 FA additions in this theoretical offseason. Suh, Maxwell, and Maclin. Everyone else is returning or drafted.
The fans and media wont let us wait another season. I agree we are only a couple pieces away but most likely if this season goes up in flames Rex is gone and Geno is competing next training camp. Build it up to rip it down a year too early. That would be typical Jets.
Fair enough, but I'm pretty confident in both the top tier talent and team depth if the Jets were able to assemble the players I've described. I know it's a long shot, but not outside the realm of possibility. I don't think that adding 3 new FA starters and 1 new drafted starter will ruin the chemistry of the team, and I think it will allow us to be a young dominant team for a while and maintain some flexibility in the future. Just my opinion though.
