I had some hopes for Milliner this year, but he's been on an injury roll all year. First the sprain he had during the OTAs, then the high ankle sprain in training camp, now he s got quad tightness. He had all those surgeries in college, then last year he missed both the OTAs and several games during the season. At this point, you are just constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop with him and something else to happen. Even when he's playing, he s often playing badly because of all the missed time. Likewise, we drafted McDougle , and he s out for the year. Given his history now, it probably won't go well for us with him either. I hope Idzik learns a lesson from those two picks, and doesn't pick any more playes with an injury history with high draft picks. I mean it's ok to take a risk with a lower pick, but you don't need that kind of baggage in the first four or so rounds.
Our scouting dept. might be in the bottom percentile of all NFL teams. They absolutely suck at drafting offensive players and if it wasn't for Rex, I have a feeling their record on defensive draftees would suck too.
IIRC we just hired Rod Graves from Zona as head of scouting. Jury is still out on him and whoever he brings in. Bradway has survived three regime changes somehow he must have nudes of Woody's old lady or some shit.
I don't disagree with the dislike for drafting players with an injury history and I didn't like the Milliner pick at all. But as far as McDougle is concerned does one injury really mark him as injury prone prior to drafting him? Especially when it was a shoulder injury which is not something to nag defensive backs.
So far its gone exactly like I thought it would,I didn't think Patterson would go awol but I knew he wouldn't amount to shit ,the Millner thing is becoming laughable,Idzik dropped the ball .Pryor is a big hitter but is pure trash in coverage so far,how could Idzik not see what is so obvious? Its like having a flat tire on your car ,having three spares in your trunk but driving home anyway because you think you can make it
I think being in the bottom percentile would require them to suck at scouting on both sides of the ball. I think they have been below average at finding offensive talent, but last year Idzik was working with scouts from the previous FO. He brought in two of his own guys this year to cover half of the regions, and I think two games is a bit premature to judge their scouting right now. Nobody knew what to think of Kerley after 2 games because he had barely played. The jury is still in the jury box listening to testimony. Let's not play judge before they can see all of the evidence.
Fair enough Byz.. Let it never be said that Cman isn't a patient man. Lets give them a mulligan for 2014 and judge on this upcoming draft. As you know, I've been saying all along that 2015 is the pivotal year and not this one.
Hey, for the record, once I started reading about McDoodoo's injury history I had an internal groan, but the kid has some serious talent. Same with Milliner. As far as the offensive guys, I think they have grabbed a good handful of hopeful players to access the guard position, but just like the draftniks that spend their days trashing Idzik mercilessly, I was stumping for a wide receiver in the first 3 rounds. And there was some real talent. It may turn out that Idzik shit a hamster in terms of funding easy impact players for the offense in the first 2 days of the draft. I'm just not cashing in my hate chips yet because unlike those wannabe draftniks, I don't care how early I have documented my decision that the draft was bad.
Why do I get the feeling that Idzik passed on the "A" level talent because he knew down the road, he'd have to pay them "A" level money.. Damn but I hope I'm wrong on that. Since Idzik is banking all this cash for 2015, I'd like to think he has a plan in place already. God help us if he doesn't.. We need guys on the field Byz. We've gotten so used to buying into "potential" that we're inclined these days to overlook "results".
Maybe it's because he wants to pay the "A" level talent he has on the field now? IDK, Cman. It does appear that he was doing the Bradway era game of diamonds in the rough with some positions of need, but unlike Bradway, he was also using his early picks on positions of need that conform to the highest impact for successful teams: safety and tight end. (removing QB from the equation for obvious reasons) You only have to look at the most dynamic offenses and defenses in the NFL to know that TE and S are a couple of the most important impact positions. Whether the picks he made pan out are entirely another story.
lol that's a ridiculous claim. No GM would intentionally draft worse players so they could pay them less money, especially since the new bargaining agreement.
FWIW we never would have drafted Namath had this been the Jets philosophy at the time and probably half of us wouldn't be Jets fans.
Are you sure about that? Sandy Alderson doesn't bid on top Latin talent because he already knows the FO won't approve of it. Idzik is banking cash and saving Woody money pure and simple. Don't think for a second he's not looking closely at not only the dollars being paid now, but also the dollars he'll have to pay down the road. He could have easily drafted better talent than Amaro but didn't on offense. He could even bid on Revis to bring him back to close an obvious hole but he didn't. Idzik is watching the dollars very closely. No question about it. You wanna think Future Money doesn't come into play when your financial philosphy is frugality? Be my guest. I bet you think Alderson doesn't take money into account either when looking at raw Latin talent.
Good thing the Jets didn't take a risk on Curtis Martin, the injury- plagued Pitt RB taken in the 3rd round on a gamble by NE. Thing about injuries is a lot of it is luck (good, bad, etc.). College injury history is not always a great indicator of NFL injuriy forecast.
Without Joe Namath the Jets would be in Seattle or Tampa or New Orleans, maybe in Arizona or Indianapolis. They'd have moved there in the merger process and been glad to be part of the NFL at that point. Namath and Weeb and Buddy Ryan didn't just solidify the merger. They kept the Jets in the NY/NJ metro area.
