You're absolutely right, JK is the EAXCT kind of talent you retain when you're QB is hitting his stride. You have to keep those kinds of reliable Wide receivers that have chemistry with you're young Quarterback, it means LOADS to their development. We didn't do that with Sanchez and it hurt him. Even if Smith isn't our starter next year, I think a rookie or FA would be better off with JK around then not. Saunders isn't gonna replace him, if JI did that I'd be incredibly pissed at him, thats NOT a lateral move its an unnecessarily cheap move that could hurt you're potential franchise QB, whomever that may be.
There's also this stigma that small wide receivers can't play outside therefore Saunders can only see the field when Kerley sits. Steve Smith is the same size as Kerley and plays outside, Derrick Mason played outside. There are plenty of smaller receivers who line up outside. There are plenty of ways to get both Kerley and Saunders on the field going forward if the Jets want to. JMO
Definitely not that I want to see Kerley go, but personally I want a bigger threat at WR. Maybe the Jets can find a reasonable way to retain Kerley and get that big threat, I mean if we invest a second round pick in receiver and retain Kerley I guess I can get down with that. Sign Maxwell, bring back Kerley, Harrison, Harris, Vick, Douzable, take a 1st round tackle, second round WR... Won't hear complaints from me with that.
I think the Jets learned their lesson already when they let Jerricho Cotchery go. The objective of this Jets offense is to get multiple receiver threats that are versatile (Can play in the slot, Flanker or Split End). I do not believe the Jets need an all-pro receiver to have a good offense, just receivers that are reliable that can do their part. A deep threat could make the offense complete. Wouldn't be surprised if the Jets looked at Denarius Moore from the Raiders as a mid-cost high upside guy that is still young.
Harris plays a thankless but needed role on the defense, and theres no obvious replacement for him on the roster, so they should definitely re-sign him next year. I'm not sure if he should be re-signed to either a 1 or two year deal, but it needs to happen, we need our MIKE. Harrison is an obvious candidate for a huge re-sign. Ellis and Douzable… how good is this TJ barnes guy? He might make one of these two expendable, still it'd be nice to have at least one back. I've said my piece on JK, bring him back, in fact EXTEND HIM RIGHT NOW. Nelson… hm. Well, i don't regret his being on the team this year, thats for sure. If he's brought back it should be on a one year deal, see if Shaq Evans or somebody else steps up, compete and all that. Same for Salas. Colon should be replaced by either Abosuhi or Dozier, he's a leader but not the future. Keep him to compete maybe? Vick should be re-signed if Geno Smith pans out, he's a good backup. If Smith bombs… well HE becomes the backup for his replacement so Vick would be a bit excessive… theoretically. This will be Powells only chance to get a decent sized deal, are the jets willing to pay the extra millions to keep him? he won't be THAT expensive, but maybe they draft another RB with more upside to replace him or even CJ and Ivory. Its VERY dependent on how the draft looks, I'd like to keep him but who knows.
I would put Kerley, Harrison, Harris and Douzable at the top. Kerley brings too much to the table and we don't know what we have in Saunders yet, or the other rookies for that matter
That's really what I'm talking about, a big play threat, although I'm not demanding an all-pro guy. I've always been a proponent of a WR corps by multiple types, not one big name guy.
David Harris.. I'd let him walk depending on the linebacker class in next years draft.. We're building a young solid team, Harris is aging and kills us in the pass game ( i know he finally had a clutch would-be pick for the first time in ages vs GB). If the LB draft class i'd like to see us still bring in someone else via Free Agency. I loved Hitman though, but its about that time. Snacks... Pay that man. Point blank. We gotttttta retain Kerley that's Geno's favorite target, plus he's been our only productive guy for a while at WR. I'd take Kyle Wilson back if Walls doesn't grow into a good #2 CB.. Let McDougle take that #2 spot and keep Wilson at the nickle. I know we all have something to hate about Wilson but he's always rated high as a nickle CB in the NFL and we might actually realize that he WAS good at his spot. Can't lie i don't see him targeted much but when he is targeted it's a completion, pick your poison. I wish we could have traded Ellis before his contract was up i think we could've gotten a good pick out of him. He deserves to start somewhere, Idzik will low ball him badly and he'll test the market.. im sure he'll have suitors Day 1 of free agency. I think we can get Douzable back for cheap. Same with Barnes. Bye Bye: Landry, Vick, Powell, Colon, Harris, Nelson,
If we wanted to trade him we still could, but the depth at interior defensive line is too important for what we do. Also, I absolutely don't want to start a rookie at Mike linebacker. If we took a ILB in the first round I'd be ok with starting him, but you can get quality out of a later pick. I'd rather resign Harris, and go into the draft with flexibility.
Why not move Demario to Mike and draft/sign somebody to take Demario's spot. Demario Is playing like a mad-man right now i think he's capable of taking that role.
Well I like Davis in his role, and I want more of an enforcer at Mike given the choice. I'm not saying it's not an option, but I'd like a big hitter/run stuffer to play Mike. Even if we do what you're saying and draft someone, I don't think starting a rookie is ideal. Taking an ILB in the first round isn't my first choice, I mean just look at Davis. By taking him in the third round and giving him a year as a backup before starting, he had a pretty smooth development into a quality starter. It's not like Harris has had a Bart Scott level degradation in athleticism, and I'd like his presence to mentor the new backer into Rex's system. Davis plays at about 235 lbs, and it's not the end of the world but I would like a player who can maintain a solid 250 lbs playing weight at the Mike position. Not a deal breaker, but just my preference. Most of the better Mike backers in 3-4 defenses (Patrick Willis, Karlos Dansby, David Harris) play at right about 250.
Demario seems to be adjusting to his role rather well, and I'm not sure his skill set is best served as Rex's run stopping anchor, I'd prefer we kept him at WILL. a replacement MIKE needs to be found though. In my mind its ideal if we find another high end ILB in the second or third after drafting a new left tackle in the first, boring moves but necessary in the long run.
I'm calling it right now, Kyle Wilson's new contract is going to shock Jet fans. With the massive shortage of great corners in the league right now, teams are giving bottom of the barrel guys 2 - 3.5 million per year. Wilson isn't great but he is far from the bottom of the barrel. If the Jets want to keep him it's going to be about 4.5 - 5 million dollars. We will keep Kerley. Receivers at his production level right now are getting about 3 million per season. The Jets should pay Kerley that in a heartbeat.
Great post, and unless a Kuechly or Patrick Willis talent is there you virtually never take one in the first round. MIKE linebackers have to take on all the blocks because they play to the side of the formation with more blockers on it. They also generally take on the guards whereas the WILL linebacker will take on the tightends and fullbacks. I played MIKE in high school and it's a tireless thankful job but if you take on your blocks appropriately and hold your gaps you free up so much for other linebackers to run through and make the tackles.
Yeah thats very true, was in the back of my mind when i thought about having an enforfcer at Mike.. Davis isn't that, and can be utilized better where he is. I didnt mean we have to take a LB in the 1st though, 2nd or 3rd rounder could strive under Rex and all the help up front. Were gonna have to start at least planning for a Harris replacement soon though
I'm all for drafting Harris' successor this offseason, I just want Harris around to help develop him. You never know, Jeremiah George might show some real promise but I think he's more of a quality backup/special teamer.
Demario Davis should get more playing time over Harris,he only comes in on two MLB sets or passing downs,I think he has a sack in both games so far no?Guys got crazy speed ,he does have two sacks but they were both against Green Bay I just checked,I could of sworn he had a sack on Carr
2 ILB sets are our base defense, and Davis is in on most plays. I wouldn't worry that Davis isn't getting enough snaps.
You realize that we play a base 3-4 despite Coples putting his hand on the ground sometimes that features both on the same field at the same time on every set of downs outside of the big nickel packages?
You do realize we use 4-3 3-4 and 46 packages right?plus other packages and sets.Rex mixes things up we don't just run only 3-4 plays
