I'm generally a Rex supporter, I've never called for him to be fired. BUT as head coach he needed to be paying attention to the field and the offense....
The refs are there to officiate a game. I know who the rule applies to. And once again there is no rule that governs what to do in that circumstance. In normal situations the head coach is on whatever channel he needs to be on. Rex was on the defensive channel and didn't know Marty wanted a timeout. There is no rule that states that the ref must grant a timeout because he had his back turned regardless of who calls it. Maybe because of this game they'll go back and revise it for situations like that. The Jets blew it due to their own ineptness. But the refs can't simply grant a timeout because their back was turned and didn't see who called it. Until they revise it to account for different circumstances. I disagree with the refs call.
Where does it say that they don't have to confirm who called the timeout? If it says it in their rule book I'll concede this argument.
The offensive coordinator knew of a defensive alignment that was a clear mismatch and couldn't call a timeout. At this point, we know that Geno made the correct adjustment. How would we feel if he hadn't, Richardson didn't call the timeout and the play resulted in a pick 6? All because Rex was on the defensive channel. You may not think that Rex deserves any blame, but this situation is bothersome to me for a number of reasons. And I like Rex.
We still wouldn't have felt good, but we can throw around lots of what if's. The point is still that Geno has to be trusted out there, and all he has done is prove that. Marty shouldn't have jumped the gun in my opinion, and that's where the blame lies.
Marty definitely deserves the lion's share of the blame, I've never disputed that. Bit the situation is what it is, the OC and HC couldn't communicate, and a DT called a timeout because he felt like it. It's a clusterfuck situation. I have since downgraded my idea of the amount of blame for Rex to low, but I still believe that he should have been invested in the play at hand and not the possible defensive sets that could have happened if that play failed. I don't get why people are so ready to forgive Rex for not being ready to call the timeout, yet still so insistent that only the HC can call a TO from the sideline. People are blaming a ref for not honoring a rule that Rex apparently did not care to be a part of.
I'm definitely not blaming the Refs at all, but when was the last time an offensive coordinator was trying to call a TO when he actually needed to but was unable to because he couldn't contact Rex? If you have an example of when that happened, I'll admit that Rex's channel choice was a problem.
Chances are that if a TO needed to be called and Rex wasn't available, and it ended up being a turnover, that we never would have heard about it the attempted TO. The only reason we know about this one was because Sheldon Richardson did the unthinkable and called it himself.

Has he really proven that he should be trusted out there? I think you have to just trust him but I don't think he's proven anything yet
Oh bull crap. Wasn't our fault the Jets couldn't score a point on their own homefield. Our defense totally shut you guys down and you had opportunities to score that game in the red zone but couldn't do it but waaaa the refs handed us the game. Last sunday your coach called a TO that cost you a td and the refs handed us the game. Come on now. The Jets screwed themselves.
