But you are talking about hypotheticals, should it be a penalty on the Jets? I don't know but what I do know is it isn't and regardless of who called the timeout it should not have been granted.
There have been quite a few logical reasons posted here but you just refuse to acknowledge them. You are confusing the illegality of the TO call and who is liable for it. _
I wouldn't go so far as to call a penalty on the Jets but it's the JETS fault--NOT the refs fault that the ref made the TO call. This falls squarely on the Jets and not the refs as it is NOT the refs responsibility to confirm who made the a TO call. Therefore there is no reason for the refs to "fix" the Jets screw up. _
Cmon byz, you see these guys talking and pacing like crazy. The call was in, westhoff has dispelled the only the h.c. can call t.o. marty is at fault for micromanaging and panicing instead of trusting geno to get the alignment right. Coach spacing was not the issue.
You're combining the two situations together. The Sheldon/MM mix up and the ref himself. The two are separate Sheldon had no business calling that timeout and Rex should've been on the offensive station in that moment. That was a clusterfuck on their part and it cost us. Now that's out of the way. The rule states only the head coach can call a time out. Which means any usual protocol that should be administered cannot be applied in that situation because a non head coach called the time out. Had Rex called it then there is no argument.
I really think the only reason we lost this game is that once the Jets went up, the Packers O-line was given a free pass to hold as much as they wanted without penalty. Sure made it easy for them to light up our secondary. It didn't help that we couldn't run the ball for crap. Blaming the 12th man penalty, the jacked-up time out, or even the secondary is a waste of time. If the front 7 can put pressure on Rodgers all day like they were able to at the start, it's a blowout. That didn't stop because Sexy Rexy changed what the D was doing, and the Pack didn't suddenly learn to block.
Coach spacing wouldn't have been an issue if Rex had actually been listening to the offensive channel. I've already accepted that there could be reasons for Marty not being near the LOS. I've gone through all of this twenty times today, and twenty times yesterday. Nothing excuses the lack of execution by the Jets coaching staff.
thats been discussed and the reasoning for switching over was pretty solid. i lay this shit storm of a loss at rex's feet too but not because of his proximity to marty or what channel his headset was on. thats just too nitpicky for me.
Dude you do not understand the rule. It's not a rule to be enforced AGAINST the refs. The JETS made an unauthorized TO that the ref was under no obligation to confirm. The TO got called in an illegal manner BY THE JETS but there is no mechanism for the refs to remedy the unauthorized action by the Jets. Please tell me you understand this. Please. _
I'm actually shocked that anyone reading the last 4 pages of this thread still doesn't understand who "a time out can only be called by the HC" is directed at. _
I don't accept the rationale for Rex being on the defensive channel at all. It was 4th down and the Jets needed a score to stay in the game. For a guy who claims to believe in his team up and down, it sure seems like he didn't believe that his offense had a chance at that moment. Seconds before the snap happened he was talking defense and apparently oblivious to the offensive situation.
a play takes 10 seconds at most, that means after he discussed the offensive play with marty he has 14 seconds to figure out a defensive package to send in in the event they didn't make it. what did you want him to do after the call was in?
The write up from NFL.com "By the way, how about that for a fun timeout? It's worth noting that back in 2007, when he was defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, Rex Ryan lost a game in the same way -- except that time, he was the assistant whose sideline call wiped away a momentous play, in that case a fourth-and-1 stop that could have interrupted the Patriots' undefeated regular season". Rex has been here before.
Maybe pay attention to the game-critical 4th down attempt that was happening right in front of him? I know it's a lot to ask.
Thanks for bringing that up, I'm sure nobody here was aware of it. Especially after Rex himself brought it up during the postgame presser. By the way, your team just lost to the Bills. Fuck off.
What are you talking about? The rule is cut and dry. Only the head coach on the sideline can call a timeout. It gets no simpler than that. What happened was that the ref used a judgement call. Since there is no rule in place for situations like that. The call should not have stood. That's MY judgement call on the situation. The ref decided to uphold it. In the end we got screwed.
The only thing they could have done differently was give the Jets their timeout back. That is the ONLY different outcome.
That ballsy 4th down call we made in the 1st half, rex was probably on the defense channel when the ball was snapped
