Obviously, to the NFL. If the rule states, "only the head coach can call a time out from the sideline" How is that interpreted any other way? Seems pretty clear cut.
Ok again. Are you saying that's an imposition on the REF or on the TEAM? You realize it can be interpreted two ways. Who exactly are you imputing that rule upon? Because I don't know a lot of rules that are placed on refs. _
I think Stokes is saying should the ref penalize the Jets for calling an illegal TO or grant the Jets some kind of concession a la giving back the TO for having made a mistake.
The rule is imposed on the TEAM. If the ref has no idea and more importantly no OBLIGATION to confirm who made the call--that's on the TEAM not the ref. The ref called the TO and the play is dead. It was the actions of the TEAM against the RULES that caused the TO to be called. The ref has no obligation to remedy something the Jets did that they were unauthorized to do. _
Exactly. The rule isn't there on the ref--it's on the TEAM to call TOs in the authorized way. If the team did something that was unauthorized then that's an infraction on the Jets. The refs don't need to remedy the fuckup by the Jets. _
and they gave you the game against us in 2010 w/ 2 bogus INTs where both receivers were down then GB defenders ripped ball out. The call was bad on Sunday, it didn't cost us the game.
haha you should throw your hat in the ring as the rules guy on CBS, that dude is scary. I saw Marty calling it, and I never knew there was a rule that only the coach can call it from the sidelines. It looks pretty clear that Rex didn't call it and was intently listening to defense while watching the play. It's also clear Marty is running down the field trying to call it, right before the snap; but it looks like the snap got off first. Anyway, fuck, life of a Jets fan.
I agree with all of that. I read somewhere that even if the snap got off, if the ref acknowledges they request for a TO and blows the whistle with the intent to accede to that request, that the play got off before the snap is irrelevant. It's still a dead ball once the whistle blows. It was a clusterfuck all the way around. _
Even though I haven't been a fan of your posts in this thread, that is the best suggestion I have seen.
