Glad he manned up and accepted the mistake. Would have been nice if he also accepted fault for the play call at the end of the 2nd which cost us points and allowed the Packers to put 7 up on the board before the half...but I guess we have to take what we can get.
I agree with this. Admit the mistake. Call it an inadvertent whistle & just replay the down. Don't burn the TO.
Of course a rule that protects all QBs safety is not even close to the same as affecting competitive balance.... but you know that already. You've got your line in the water alot lately Byz.
Well we got boned in Seattle two years ago on a by far worse call in the history of the game. There is no way that was a catch.
Clearly Wilk should have a 3 game suspension for breaking the rules by calling an illegal time out. Someone needs to be held accountable, the Ref didn't violate the rule, the player did.
The time out was just a typical Jets moment. The situation was a series of events all happening on one play and all were indicative of a team being dysfunctional on the sidelines. 1) the RB (Powell?) lines up on the wrong side of Geno. 2) Marty sees this and panics saying we need a time out, Marty isn't by Rex so he needs to run up the sideline trying to get Rex's attention saying "time out". 3) Rex is not on the offensive channel but the defensive channel so the one person who can call a time out isn't on the right channel to hear that they need to call one. 4) Sheldon starts yelling time out, perhaps to get Rex's attention because Rex isn't paying attention? 5) the Ref hears multiple voices saying time out so he grants it without verifying it's the head coach, I can somewhat understand this if He heard multiple people calling time out it might be that he thought he missed hearing the HC call it, shouldn't have happened but I can see that circumstance happening. 6) meanwhile while all this is going on Geno corrects Powell's positioning and gets the play off. Everything that went wrong was based on 2 main factors. 1) Marty didn't trust Geno to correct it and get the play off and panicked. 2) Rex wasn't paying attention to the field or the sideline or the offense and was on the defensive channel. That's dysfunction on the coaching staff and that's where the fault lies.
Sheldon didn't know the rule. He should know it. However the ref is paid to enforce the rules. He should be punished. But considering that the league justified the call I doubt they'll do anything to the ref.
On offense, it's the WCO terminology, I am sure of it. It's far too complex, and likely the reason why Geno has to correct player positions so many times during a game.
So if the Ref turns to see who is making the call, he misses the snap...too late. You're pissed cause we lost, not the Refs fault.
But was it a mistake? Given what we know and the rule? If only a coach can call a TO and a player standing behind the ref screams timeout--and the refs immediate reaction is to call the timeout--who's "mistake" is that? The ref who reacted or the player who did something he was not authorized to do? This has nothing to do with enforcing a rule. ONLY the head coach or a player on the field can call it--but a player on the sideline did. Should the refs reward a team for doing something against the rules? So a ref is supposed to say, after the fact--"oh, I'm sorry--that player that prompted me to blow the whistle wasn't authorized to do so--so I'm going to reward that team with a timeout that they did not legally call"? _
I never said he should have turned around either. They could've got together and corrected the mistake. They do this all the time (see last years Panthers game) it's inexcusable to grant a timeout that was not called by the head coach.
If the rule says, "only the head coach can call a TO from the sidelines", how is there any other way to interpret that?
Nothing should happen. It should be treated like a blown call. The league office should send out a memo in the week after saying they screwed up. What should be done going forward however is that the refs should be required to confirm the HC is calling the TO when it's coming from the sidelines. If they really can't turn around, then have them wear one of those electric fence collars with the HC having the remote.
