He's has to be tuned in to what the offense is doing on 4th down, with the game practically on the line. He just has to. He's the head coach. I know coaches that specialize in one area and run one side of the team do this sort of thing all of the time in the NFL (BB with the Pats defense sometimes, Jason Garret with the Cowboys offense, etc), but on 4th down with the game (virtually) hanging in the balance, Rex has to be completely immersed in that offensive play. He's not a defensive coordinator anymore.

I'm listening to the Bill Simmons/Cousin Sal podcast and they're the only ones that acknowledge that the refs blew it. Them of all people considering they hate the Jets lol.

Simmons basically gave us no shot last week on his podcast, so he was probably really surprised how well we played in that game.

edit: I haven't listened to this week's podcast yet, but I am generally stunned by how many people in the media are just pretending like the refs did absolutely nothing wrong. I'm probably just a delusional homer, but I just can't help but feel that if this were a more popular, well-respected team, the uproar over the TO gaffe would have been louder.

I know there are a lot of fans upset with Marty M's playcalling, and the overall job he's done so far as OC. But is it too soon to call for his replacement?

As strange as his playcalling seems at times, all those stupid gimmick plays he calls that rarely work, we did score 24 points against the Packers, including a big halftime lead.

    Thoughts?

He said the Jets blew it and that because we played them tough he thinks the Packers are a shakey team. Yeah he definitely sounded surprised.

I'd like to know why Rex was on the defensive channel during the most important offensive play of the game. I get planning ahead, but WTF?

He has to take the blame. In that situation with one timeout you have to hold on to it. You already called a play trust your players to execute.

This is what I said in that topic I made earlier. Marty, if you think Geno is the man you have to trust him more. Clearly, Marty doesn't have full trust in Geno like I thought.

Until I see it on the field, I will continue to think this way.

Has anyone called for his replacement? I haven't heard that at all. Also, people seem to be overwhelmingly positive about him. Most I've seen have called him the best OC the Jets have had in ages. Of course, OCs tend to be popular with a given fanbase at first, and then slowly but surely lose their popularity. Take Schotty, for example. There were a ton of people on this message board who LOVED him at first . . . and we all know how that changed. (I still think he gets waaay too much hate)

With any "bad" result to the play, it's a great decision by Marty. It's a coach making a wise decision based on what he sees on the field.

But no, the result of the play caused our hearts to leap, and therefore it's a "fiasco."

Similarly, Geno made a "horrible mistake" last week when his NON-fumble was recovered Oakland.
But this week, when his fumble was overturned and ruled an incomplete forward pass, there has been very little mention of the play on this board.

We sports fans get blinded by the on-paper results of plays, and this tends to cause wild generalizations that make quality discussion very difficult.

You really can't blame MM for not trusting Geno. He completely unraveled after that interception before the half. MM will make up for it, for sure.

On the same note, good thing the forum asylum here is not running the team - wanting MM fired after only 2 games into the season!!!!
Give me a fu%^ing break man, what a bunch of morons to even suggest this....what bullsh&t

If the Jets come away 4-4 after 8 games - I'll take it hands down...the 2nd part of the season will tell all where this team is headed.

I think Geno was still focused at that point and was willing to make the play to win. It all comes down to trust and Geno was setting everyone up correctly. Let the kid do his thing.

Not in a vacuum, one play never determines the outcome of a game. Suggesting so is absurd.

    Terrible argument.

Dude everything you post is borderline ridiclous, first you made a thread saying Idzik isn't gonna re sign Wilk because he slapped a guy, then your talking about replacing Marty,I'm not trying to be a dick but you can't be more clueless.Marty called a good game until he fucked it up.He's the best OC we have had here in the Rex Ryan era

MM just fell on the sword for Rex who was busy talking defense while the offense was at a critical juncture in the game.

I thought only the eleven players on the field and the head coach can call timeout?

As the announcers were saying, in actual games, that rule doesn't apply to time outs called immediately before the snap. If the ball is about to be snapped, the ref has to make an instant decision and there's no time to look over at who called the time out.

Yeah matches what we all saw. Marty was yelling for it and Richardson saw it and called it to the ref. Oh well
