This was pretty telling of yesterday and how much improvement our offensive line needs. According to Pro Football Focus, Geno Smith was pressured a total of 15 times and in those 15 instances, he was 4-14 with a QBR of 40.2. When there was no pressure, Smith was 12-18 with a QBR of 83.6. Geno Smith finished 16-32 for 176 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Pros: - Completed passes to 11 different receivers. - Threw an absolutely perfect ball to Decker for a TD. - At the 2 minute warning of the first half, Geno was 10-13 with 103 yards and a TD. Cons: - In the second half, Smith finished 7-19 with 73 yards and an INT. - After rushing 5 times in the first half, he only rushed twice for 8 yards in the second half. - After going 6-8 on third downs in the first half, they went 2-9 in the second half. Many reasons as to why we played so poorly in the second half, coaching, offensive line, QB, injured number one receiver, timeout call, etc. Either way, we need to figure out the offensive line and we need to figure out how to consistently play at a high level. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20..._against_the_packers_that_had_everything.html
Thought he looked solid. Decker getting hurt didnt help, and Winters was really really bad. I can still see a real improvement over last year. I dont shudder every time he throws for fear of an INT.
Hell, it was Winters who caused the interception. Had Winters blocked his man, Geno would have hit an open Sudfeld for either a TD or right at the 2 or 3 yard line. Because of the interception, the entire momentum turned.
IMO the OL is definitely a part of the problem, but I think the Lion's share is MM. His play calling was awful in the 2nd half. He went into play not to lose mode. Didn't play to our strengths, didn't use screens to counter the Packers' blitzes, screws around with the wildcat, and gets too cute. I'm getting to the point where I can see why he failed so miserably in Detroit and want his butt gone following this season if he doesn't correct his problems. If Winters has a problem with inside rush moves (as another poster suggested), I don't understand why he is the starting LG and protecting Geno's blind side. I know he played LT in college and is used to the left side, but what good is it if he can't protect Geno's blind side. If it's true that he has a problem with that, then Rex or Idzik, someone is responsible for not fixing it, or for bringing in an OG who doesn't struggle with that move and who can protect Geno.
Agree here. The play calling went ultra conservative. I remember it was our second to last drive of the game and we had just gotten a first down. We were on our own 48 or something and it was third down and 6, I think. MM calls for a run play up the gut that gets stuffed for 1 yard. I was so pissed!! Why the fuck would you run the ball on third down and long with the game on the line? You couldn't run it all game!!! The nice part about all this is that it is very early. This is the second game of the season, and these things can be fixed. But that's just it, they need to be fixed asap.
There were a cpl passes that we were lucky weren't pick sixes. Would like to see him read the defense better. Still not completely fair to evaluate because he still needs better weapons around him. We have solid players but no star players on offense. Watch a top ten guy like Phillip Rivers play an entire game and then watch Geno. Still a really long way for him to go and it's unknown whether he'll ever get there. Much better than last year, so far so good, and I'm not trying to trash talk him just we need to put his play in perspective. Last year he was one of the worst qb's in the league, bottom 3. Now he's in the bottom third. Id like to see him finish the season in the middle of the pack. If he can get to the top third then I think we're in business.
It's obvious he's seeing the field better. The run game wasn't working so he had to carry the load. Decker gone didn't help....neither did the play-calling. Tight ends should have been more involved in the 2nd half. The non-td toss to Kerley was nice. Anyone how many snaps he took from under center vs. shotgun?
Everyone played like shit the 2nd half. Losing Decker did not help. Was hoping Geno could step his game up and just get other players inspired to play better but he overthrew some receivers and didn't take advantage of some opportunities. His accuracy was never elite to begin with and I hope people stop saying he has elite accuracy after yesterday. I just wish he could get rid of the ball faster.
I agree. Even the interception that Winters screwed up was in large part Smith holding the ball too long. Sudfield was open. The concern about Smith remains one of how he deals with adversity. Some of the passes in the second half were clearly off, and those included ones he stepped into and was not pressured. Were there any unforced drops by the receivers? I can't think of any, so that excuse is not valid. Decker going out hurt, but even before he did..... Not that I am saying it's all on him by any means. But I wonder what Vick would have done if he got in there.
He was solid. There's definitely room for improvement and he's still learning and he'll make mistakes. But he looks like an NFL QB.
He got hit literally right after the ball was snapped. I don't know how much quicker he should've thrown the ball in that situation.
Making the quick throw is part of being a successful NFL Qb. I noticed somewhere that Smith said he should have delivered the throw earlier.
I think Geno bounces back from adversity, but the throws he misses out on is due to him just not being as accurate as many believed (he does this at least 1 a game). He's had that issue since college. That one throw where he slid out of the pocket and had Decker WIDE open down the field. Couldn't believe he missed that one. The INT, the ball should have came out the second the ball was snapped. He waited until Sudfeld was wide open. Geno needs to throw the ball in anticipation that the receiver will be open.
The ball is snapped and before he could step into the throw he is hit. I may have to look at the play again. But this is based on my memory.
I agree. On the Sudfield thing the play was designed to be a timing route, and he was open. Before the ball got there, unfortunately.
He's improved, but he's still a work in progress..... On a side note, how come Jeff Cumberland /Jace Amaro where non existent yesterday? They should have been used more
I just watched it on NFL.com the ball was snapped. And before he could set his feet and throw he gets hit. In real time that sequence took 3 seconds.
You always love the backup QB... until he actually gets a chance to play. Two years ago it was McElroy you wanted so badly until he got stomped in his one start. Last year it was Simms for the win. Until you got to see him actually play. Don't you get tired of the mea culpa posts after the backup QB proves there is a reason that Rex and his staff prefer the starter? I think Vick has a chance to do good things if he has to play for the Jets but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's old and ineffective as well. He hasn't played like gangbusters the last two seasons and his teams were 5-11 in the games he started. I'd much rather that Geno plays and learns than that we have to discover again that the backup option isn't all we'd like him to be.
That one pissed me off. He was facing pressure so he slid up in the pocket and avoided it. He had Decker wide open and all the time he wanted to plant and throw but he still felt invisible pressure and rushed it by throwing on the run, resulting in a slight overthrow and an incompletion instead of a long TD. Can't do that and expect accurate throws.
