Willie Colon is a middle of the pack o linemen who is a lot older then the rest of the guys you mentioned. At this point in his carrer at age 31 he should know by now that this bs is only hurting the team.He shoudnt be mentioned in the same sentence as those guys.He had 11 penaltys last year and already has 3 in one game this year he needs to cut those stats in half
If Rex threatened to fine or punish him somehow for penalties (if the CBA would allow it, which I doubt it does, but even if it allows it Rex doesn't have the stones to do it), I bet he'd cut down on them. He may not cut them out entirely, but they'd be more manageable. About the only thing they can do is to replace him in the starting lineup, and as other posters have said, he's a leader on the OL, so I'm not sure that would ever happen. It all goes back to Rex's being so undisciplined himself and being a players' coach. As numerous posters said in the game thread, this is something that probably will never improve until Rex is fired.
I think you are underestimating how much he contributes to the cohesiveness of the o-line. Tell me who you are going to put in his place, that will contribute to making the jets the 6 ranked rushing team last year and they are on their way again this year if MM decides to use our RB as they shoud be used. The reason he was brought in, is because the jets could not find a young productive guard that can do what he does and when they tried to develop one, Vlad failed miserably.
Numbers via http://www.nflpenalties.com/index.php?&year=2013 http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/penalties-per-game?date=2014-02-02 NY JETS Penalties per Game Ranking (1 being most in the league) 2009: 20th 2010: 15th 2011: 15th 2012: 29th 2013: 10th It's only been a recent problem. Was Rex only a "player coach" and "undisciplined" in 2013 only? That's what your logic would point too. Penalties were a problem in this game, but let's not sit here and pretend the Jets led the league every year under Rex. We have a couple bad games a year, just like every other team, hence our rankings.
Rex looked plenty pissed at the post game presser. He mentioned the sloppy play specifically. He saw what we saw. I hope he's learning to keep his foot up some asses...even after wins.
To begin with penalties aren't the only area where a lack of discipline and accountability shows up, so your comment that "let's not sit here and pretend the Jets led the league every year under Rex" is absurd. It's harder to compare with other teams on a year-by-year basis, but showing a definite tendency to be in the bottom (worst) half of the NFL every year in penalties is a pretty clear indication of a lack of discipline and attention to detail on Rex s part. With the exception of 2004, the Jets record in the 7 years before he took over was in the top (better) half of the NFL as follows and compares very favorably with their record under Rex: 2008: 26th 2007: 26th 2006: 25th 2005: 31st 2004: 12th 2003: 19th 2002: 22nd Stats taken from: http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...onType=REG&tabSeq=2&qualified=false&Submit=Go To be sure, there was a significant turnover in personnel, and in veteran leadership on the team, but there's no disputing that with the exception of 2012 and 2004, the Jets have been worse every single year. To also attempt to claim that the team hasn't been undisciplined under Rex and not held accountable is flat out wrong imo.
I don't like the penalties but I do kind of like having an enforcer on the field. If it messes with their psyche it's worth a few penalties here and there, but I don't want to see this trend continue. Some of those were in terrible spots. The Jets were one of the youngest teams in the league last year. If I were a betting man I'd say that younger less experienced players commit more penalties, but I could be wrong.
I'm sure Rex will be having words, and even if he doesn't when Willie sees the game again he'll see Rex caught on camera getting pissed off by yet another penalty.
He's a good player but someone really needs to get on him about those penalties. It's killing us, and we're not that good of an offense to be constantly overcoming 2nd/3rd and long situations.
Why don't they bench him? He's not very good to begin with. I don't think he's really that much better than an Aboushi in that position and presumably Aboushi wouldn't get the penalties that Colon does. By the end of the year the younger Aboushi might develop to be as good as Colon anyway... either way they would be giving solid experience to a young lineman. Where is the upside to keeping Colon in? He plays "physical"?? He's barely an average NFL guard and his penalties continue to kill this offense.
I don't know the answer beyond knowing it is not because Colon is an above average OG. It's either that Aboushi sucks or Ryan is sticking with the vet.
I can't disagree as I didn't pay particular attention to him. I do know he got at least one more penalty though. That's obviously been a pattern for him.
