I know probably the majority of this board hates the Wildcat (even though Im not sure what we saw today was really the Wildcat) but what are some thoughts on the playcall where Vick just missed Decker and how Vick was used overall? I wonder if that end around to Vick was Marty's call or did Rex call it. I get the feeling Rex wanted to send a message to DC's around the league that even though Vick isnt starting they need to gameplan for him. I thought it was a decent looking play overall and could've easily been a TD. On the other hand I dont like the idea of getting Geno out of a groove. You only get 3 shots on 1st and goal to get it in the endzone. It isnt fair to take one of those snaps away from Geno after he gets you there. Want to set up a special package for Vick for when and if the offense is struggling? Thats fine with me. But didnt love the way it was used today. Hopefully it isnt a continuing trend. Other than all that I thought Marty was solid. Putting Geno in perfect position to succeed and the targets did a great job all day of getting open.
I just hope the Jets aren't using the wildcat because they want to get Vick in the game somehow. His injuries haven't been pound-pound-pound affairs, they've been one wrong hit and he was out. I'd rather have him on the bench and not risking injury when the Jets don't absolutely need him on the field. He's an MVP for us on the bench because he's a constant reminder to Geno that he has to keep his stuff together.
The number of wildcat and gimmicky plays were quite surprising. I thought we were good enough to beat the Raiders playing straight up.
For a minute I thought we had Sparano on the sidelines again. Maybe this wildcat bs really is Rex-influenced.
Needs to stop ASAP.. Its not like Geno is a statue back there and Vick brimgs a dramatically different element by coming in anyways
I think MM needs to put Geno under center and implement the running game a little more, I believe the jets ran the ball 20 times between CJ and CI. Those guys should be getting the ball at least 15 times a piece. As far as the gimmick plays in the red zone, I think they need to be taken out of the play book. The jets have the oline and the RBs to pound that ball in when they get to the red zone. JMO.
Geno is not under center more because his footwork in general and even more from center is still not where it needs to be.
I dont think it had anything to do with winning the game in itself. Id bet his thinking was more along the lines of hoping to make Vick look really good early in hopes that it would strike some fear into next weeks opponent. You could tell with Rex's body language in the post game that he expected to win this game by 20 points. I dont want to say he was hoping to run up the score or make an example out of Oakland but I think he thought a statement could be made.
Like the gimmick or not, Michael Vick is a weapon and I don't begrudge using him but the game should dictate how often. If we need a spark then yes, through the play book at them. It's when we are rolling and Geno is clicking and they bring in the Wildcat, that's when I want to break something.
Vick shouldnt see the field unless Geno gets hurt, can we keep the backup QB on the bench where he belongs?enough of this stuff
I thought Marty called a pretty shit game honestly lol and it made me sick when Vick came out just because it felt like we havent progressed as an offense. But the one play where Vick threw to Decker was awesome and I would accept it as a play to happen again
We've definitely progressed since the days of Schitty. MM understands the importance of getting you QB in rhythm early and incorporates a lot more QB friendly passes in his game plans. That said, Geno is not really a rhythm passer. He's much more of a thrower. Getting him easy completions is more about a building up early confidence.
I hope Saparano takes the stupid wildcat with him to Oakland, let see what Geno can do without messing with him! plus I hope the Jets stop calling running plays for Geno, just let him scramble when necessary, the kid won't last the season...
Personally I don't like it and have never liked it. To me it indicates a lack of creativity in their regular play-calling that they have to rely on gimmick/wildcat plays. The fact is that every play looks good when it works so if that Vick play worked it would be a lot harder to hate on it. I don't have the stats to prove it but to me it always seemed like these types of plays had a much lower completion percentage or even if completed they aren't impactful enough to be worthwhile. If it was kind of hit or miss 9/10 times but that last 1/10 times it was a guaranteed huge play then it might be worth it. To me it seems like it functions at below average output 90% of the time and 10% of the time it goes for marginally more yards than your typical play, so I don't think it's worth it.
Just shit can the wildcat completely. I was impressed with how Geno shook off the turnovers and kept on task. Fortitude has been lacking for a long while at the QB spot.
I think the wildcat is stupid. As you said, it takes plays away from Geno and can get him out of his rhythm. Only a dumbass like Rex would still want to use it. I seriously doubt that Mornhinweg would be using it if Rex didnt' demand it.
Are you people kidding me.? It was a very good game plan. Penalties and and misses and marginal flags precluded this from being a blow out. Salas dropped a sure TD albeit tough catch and the first wildcat move should have been a TD if thrown correctly. I thought the idea of trying these plays against a weaker secondary as opposed to pull the surprise against a thought D to determine effectiveness was kind of clever. I saw a whole bunch of positives out of this game, and a few negatives, penalties being the worst.
Did they? I don't keep up with other NFL teams. I don't have time for that. If they did, then shame on Mornhinweg, and maybe that gives us some clues as to why he sucked as a HC in Detroit and no one was knocking on his door when we hired him as the Jets OC. IMO, he's the best OC the Jets have had in a long, long time, but he's far from perfect, especially if he still likes to use the wildcat. That's why, even though normally it's not good to change OCs with a young QB, I'd have no problems if Rex and Mornhinweg were fired at the end of this season and Darrell Bevell were hired as the new HC. I'm sure that Bevell would know how to handle and use Geno.
