I think it's early to say that Geno got better in the offseason. Not having Hill and Holmes in the lineup may be the only difference between the close of 2013 and the start of 2014. O-line was sloppy. The d didn't make many mistakes. Outside coverage on Jones is the only one that comes to mind. The Calvin Pace roughing call was really tough and makes on think that the protection of the qb is not much different than putting flags on his waist. I think the refs missed a holding call on the Raiders first touchdown. The offensive line was sloppy early on. The running game improved. CJ2K still contributes offensively. His presence also addresses the problem the Jets had last season with overusing Ivory. I think that as the season goes on, Ivory will prove to be a better player because CJ2K took some carries away from him.
Unless you're talking about the offensive line a penalties they were far from sloppy today. It's not as if Geno was running for his life all day but they only got a couple sacks. He barely saw any pressure all game from what's supposed to be a pretty good defensive line.
The penalties were exactly what I was talking about. I really shouldn't get on Brick for his hold though. That was a veteran move that probably won the game for us.
Not a real big fan of all the cuteness in the RZ today. They also need to clean up the flags on offense as thankfully, it was the Raiders that we were playing and not one of the contenders on the upcoming schedule. A few times Geno looked poised and a few times he didn't throw the ball away or simply take the sack. Maybe that was his enthusiasm but MM has to have the chat. The Secondary today, let by AA, was outstanding. It was the Raiders but I think today's performance should give them a lot of confidence as they go up against more capable offenses. The Defense as usual played well and dominated as we all expected. The offense had nice stats, but at times bogged down and some of the playcalling had me saying "WTF..". Nice start to the season today but things get serious next week as the level of competition only goes up from here until the second half of the season. With the NE loss today, things in the AFCE might get interesting before Thanksgiving.
I'm excited, but Rex's teams have always committed too many penalties. We hurt ourselves too many times today, but I see the potential of a great season if we tighten up our errors. Big plays have to be executed, offensively and defensively, and the "Sons" have to get more sacks, that will be the difference between the playoffs and a good season. Finally, I think Coples will get an ESPY for that play!!! I think he has a patent on that clothes line.
Geno - definitely looked sharp overall and made some good reads. That said, he's got to respond better to pressure which cost us points and he also had a play where he was close to the sideline under pressure that he should have thrown away much earlier. He almost lost like 15 yards running out of bounds. RBs - Ivory and CJ2k both impressive. These guys should be the focal point. WRs - Decker and Kerley are as advertised. I would like to see someone displace Nelson. Salas's "drop" was a tough catch, but he could have made it. He gets good separation but he needs to step up here and become the third option. TEs - think Cumberland and Amaro really made their presence felt. These guys were good at finding soft spots in the coverage Cornerbacks - Allen is the best cover guy on our team, period. Walls was good and in good position on that late TD - just a great throw and great catch but overall he played well. D- line. Wilkerson, Babin and Coples were really good. Richardson was way too quiet - we need more from him in the coming games. Pryor - this dude has closing speed. No joke. Playcalling - MM overall called a good game but wildcat needs to go. Vick should not be in the game unless it is a blowout. Also, needs to keep it more vanilla in the red zone with runs from Ivory or line up in double tight end sets and leverage our size. Also needs to stop calling designed runs for Geno
-The run game looked good. Ivory and Johnson are monsters. -Geno played well. He made two mistakes. But things like that happen from time to time. Hopefully he learns from it and don't do it again. -Decker and Kerley were solid today. -Cumberland and Amaro were solid as well. -oline played well overall but they have to clean up the penalties. -Antonio Allen was THE player of the game for us. Wow. -dline started off slow but as the game wore on they started getting pressure and being disruptive. -LB's were solid. Davis made some nice plays. And Coples almost ended MJD's career with a nasty hit. Babin had a huge sack for us too. -Pryor was solid. Although he has to catch that ball on the int. But I won't kill him for it. Landry played well too. -Walls and Wilson were decent. Although they weren't challenged much vertically. But they provided sure tackling.
All I can say is , yes nice win. Miami and Buffalo did fine also. I know it's only game 1 into the season, But I love seeing The Pat's on the bottom of the standings. Go Jet's
for everyone complaining about the penalties (which yes do negatively effect the team).. the past two super bowl winners (ravens and seahawks) lead the league in penalties in the years they won the super bowl
I agree, at one point I was wondering if they ever were going to call a penalty against the raiduhs. God those zebras are frustrating
They're not a big deal and yet they are? You can't have it both ways. If I'm misunderstanding your post then I don't see the point in mentioning the Ravens and Seahawks.
Not for anything but that's not something teams or fans should fall back on. It's more of an aberration than anything. Our offense is still a work on progress that doesn't need the setbacks. It feels like Marty struggles with 1st and 2nd and long calls because teams know the screen is coming.
My overall takeaway is that if our pass rush is only that good against a shitty Oakland O-line and a rookie QB then we're dead men walking against a pissed off Aaron Rodgers next Sunday. But I was expecting 1-1 anyway, so bring it on!
I thought the o line did real well and gave Geno the time he needed and opened up holes for the runners.CJ n Ivory killed it,the defense put up a great showing,Decker looked good and so did Cumberland.Overall I liked what I saw but we have some major tests coming down the road the next month or so
