Naked man with knife gets Tasered in Harlem: police
The NYPD used a Taser to bring down a naked man who terrorized Harlem on Thursday, as he walked down the street swinging a knife, authorities say.

A naked, emotionally disturbed man wielding a knife in a Harlem playground had to be subdued by cops with a Taser on Thursday after he ignored their orders to drop the weapon.

The John Doe was wearing a shirt and boxers when he stumbled into Martin Luther King playground near Lenox Ave. and 114th St. carrying a knife and mumbling to himself.

Witnesses said he shoved an older man to the ground and then went to the sprinklers. Heedless of the kids around him, he stripped off his clothes.

“He goes to the sprinkler and gets butt naked. (A group of guys) were chasing him but they didn't want to get into the water,” said Asia Bright, 25, who was at the park with her 4-year-old daughter.

Concerned citizens chased the men out of the playground and away from the families as cops picked up the chase.

You are out in the park and next thing you know there's a naked man with a knife.
Police pepper-sprayed the man, who stood about six feet tall with a solid build. He appeared to be in his 40s but was unaware of his surroundings.

He shook off the pepper-spraying and kept walking, with the knife clutched in one hand.

Nieejah Johnson, 23, tried to get away from the scene to protect her 5-year-old and 6-month-old daughters.

“It's a nice day. You are out in the park and next thing you know there's a naked man with a knife,” Johnson said. “One second there were kids playing, then we were all running.”

A female police officer pulled her gun out and yelled “Stop, stop,” witnesses said. But the man just veered in another direction and kept moving.

Tim Vocals, 25, said the stark-naked man wound up on the corner of 114th St. and Lenox Ave.

“He was doing his money dance, butt naked in front of the cop,” Vocals said.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWSPolice cuffed the man and put him in an ambulance. He was charged with assault, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and public lewdness.
Video of the incident shows a bevy of cops following the man along the street as he muttered under his breath, ignoring their calls to stop.

When he stood on a clear patch of sidewalk, cops shot a Taser at his back. He dropped the knife and froze, then fell backwards, slamming his head hard on the concrete. Cops cuffed him and later loaded him into an ambulance.

He was charged with assault, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and public lewdness. Police were unable to identify him at the time of his arrest since he carried no identification.

Here's a great example of how Police reaction could have both a positive outcome for the perp and the community on whole. You have to wonder just how often a person could be subdued without the use of deadly force. It would have been much easier for the NYPD to just put 20 rds in this guy and call it a day. Instead, they showed compassion and common sense by simply disabling this guy long enough to put him in a straight jacket and cart his ass off to the funny farm.

I'm fairly positive that what happened in Ferguson, MO in some way affected how this situation was dealt with. The perp did not walk towards the police so there was no need for overwhelming response. There was no need to take a life as none were in danger. This was a situation where you had a mentally disturbed person in a public arena that needed to be subdued. Yeah, they could have left him with a few dozen bullet holes in his body but the important thing to acknowledge here is, they chose not to. The NYPD chose to spare his life.

Putting this in more relevant terms, the NYPD chose to spare a Black man's life. I'm sure this flies in the face of those that think the NYPD is the second coming of the Gestapo or the SS but that's not the reality. This is one time that I think Revs. Sharpton and Jackson and whomever else claims the mantel of "Black Leader" should step up and give kudos to the NYPD for their actions today. It is certainly deserved.

This episode of NYC life could have had a tragic outcome but instead, thanks to the NYPD, a life was preserved, no harm to innocents done.

Kudos to the NYPD from this former NoHA (North Harlem) resident. Good job!!!

For a change? You can turn on like 6 different channels to find reality shows or clip shows that are basically propaganda to tell you that they are clean and above reproach.

I'm guessing that in a month or two, this story will be on at least three of them.
