I think we can be effective on offense and I don't expect a bottom of the NFL pass defense. I also think the turnovers will be more neutral. If we're effective on offense (23+ points a game) and the turnovers balance out more evenly I think we can make the playoffs with a 20th or 22nd ranked pass defense. I would expect the current personnel group to be able to manage the offensive and defensive goals listed and then make the playoffs if the turnovers don't bounce heavily against us and the injuries don't take out major cogs along the way.
The true measure of John Idzik as GM won't be known until 2015/2016 when he starts inking mega contracts while still growing the team and trying to keep it together. 'Phase One' has been nothing but a few drafts, cutting dead wood, and stocking the team with young, cheap talent. Child's play. The real work starts next season and the 10 seasons after that.
I think it's safe to assume that we should improve to around middle of the pack given the quarterbacks progression in the same exact system along with the addition of better weapons. Geno completed 19% (59.5%) more passes with Kerley in the lineup along with 12 TD's/12 INT's and a 7-4 record. Add in the fact that Decker, Amaro, and Chris Johnson are now here will play into his development as at least a middle of the road quarterback. Combine that with the fact that teams virtually cannot run the ball on us very well will make this team very hard to put away. That's not to say we're great from playing behind, but teams struggle to kill the clock against good run defenses even as early as in the 4th quarter. Bad cornerback play is aided when teams are often in 3rd and long because the running game is ineffective on early downs.
If I'm not mistaken, Milliner had a couple of injuries in college, but nothing serious and he never missed a game. I'd hardly call that an injury history. AFAIK McDougle had one serious injury, the one last season, and it has nothing to do with his injury this season. Thus, I disagree with your reponse and think you are wrong. So are you saying that the Jets should never draft a player who was injured in college?
Homegrown ie. drafted....but not developed..like how steelers player sit for a few years then are ready to start.
No poster's name appeared in the post I saw. I saw a quote, but for all I knew that was your quote from a post in another thread. I'm not a mind reader.
So just because they come in and can immediately start makes them not developed by the organization? That's twisted and terrible logic. If you think Rex hasn't aided in developing our young defensive lineman and linebackers you're delusional.
You might be onto something there. We all know that Woody loves him some Rex and Idzik's hands have been tied. Idzik may be building the team for the next HC knowing that Rex will eventually be canned.
Those shouldn't be the ONLY guys you count on is my point. The Jets were counting on two injury-prone guys and a journeyman to be three of their top four corners with the other one being Kyle Wilson. Yeah there was no way that could go wrong...
Obviously some people - or A LOT - seem to forget the mess Idzik inherited when T-Bomb was shitcanned a year ago. Depleted talent level takes more than 2 years to restock. Face it; Sanchez was a mess last season, with or without the season-ending shoulder injury. Sanchez now looks like he's healed completely; Jets didn't have that option to let him heal, if he had been to stay with the Jets. It's either Sanchez starts or Geno takes over; nothing like Smith starts while Sanchez heals. That's just one facet; Jets defense was lacking depth all across the board. The two starting CBs were Cro and Revis, and Revis was just traded away. No apparent replacement for Cro was in place either. Also, it looks like 2012 draft is shaping up to be a disaster; Q at round 1, Stephen Hill at round 2 and Demario Davis at round 3. No stand-out or starter out of the three. The only draftee worthy of mentioning now is Antonio Allen out of 7th. That's pathetic. [And people were giving this moron more than enough leash, yet they think Idzik is dropping the ball. Ha! Holy shit.] And do you want to talk offense? It gets quite offensive. Sanchez was as offensive as it could possibly get as a starting QB nod. Jets WRs were fantastically inept, starting with that moron Santonio Holmes. Dustin Keller bolted for the phags [and blew his knees out. Karma, bitch.] Shonn Greene was let go. Only staples are Nick Mangold and Ferguson. They are getting up there in ages. And funny part? T-Bomb somehow structured the salary cap that featured this unimpressive unit that cost more than 100M of a salary. Give that man a round applause, for crying out loud. Idzik did what he could in 2 years - I see the past 2 years more as a 'fixing the knee-deep shit of a mess' than anything else. Now Jets have a very sound cap structure, with sufficient amount of cap money to compensate the home-grown talents next year. Their starters might be unimpressive, but they are getting solid depth all across the board. Don't forget that the DL unit is becoming a stellar unit to be feared. With Calvin Pryor watching the backfield, the middle part of the field will be that much harder to crack. And Jets added a lot of talents on the offense as well. And Idzik is dropping the ball because he couldn't address CB spot? Because he wouldn't shell 12M out to Revis? Are you fucking nuts?
It obviously wasn't your point since you insist on claiming they were injury-prone, when that isn't the case at all.
While I agree with most of your points, Demario Davis and Coples are both entering their second year of starting duties. Davis in particular has been applauded or making huge progress this offseason while turning into a vocal leader. Coples played well last year despite not being the second coming of Julius Peppers. He's not an elite speed rusher or power bullrusher but he can get to the quarterback in one on one's. This is a big season for Coples to prove his worthiness of being a first round pick but again just because he's not a superstar doesn't mean he can't be a starter for this team for several years and an above average one at that.
I'm in total agreement with you both in terms of how clueless Tanny was, the mess he left, and that Idzik has been trying to clean up the huge mess Tanny left. What I disagree with is your statment that out of Quentin Coples, Stephen Hill and Demario Davis, there is no "stand-out or starter out of the three." While neither Coples or Davis are what you'd call a stand out yet, aren't both starters? Further, I believe that Davis is in the process of developing into a standout ILB.
Vick is a stupid signing. That much for a backup and Idzik is supposed to be a "cap guy"? Ridiculous. Johnson? Our RBs weren't terrible before. We needed CB and WR help FAR more than RB help.
You two need to get your own private chat going...instant message each other. Respect the forum with all due respect.
Probably I was wrong about the 'starter' comment regarding Coples and Davis; they are indeed starters, so I'd have to retract that comment. Thanks for the notice. I should have checked the facts before.
Our backs were good last year and will be good this year....Cj has been great and hopefully will be great for us. He can take it to the house. That Jerry Rice factor.
I'm no fan of Vick's, but how exactly is he a stupid signing? He's experienced and could help mentor Geno in when and how to better run the ball. He's a quality starter if Geno should falter, and if not, a quality backup, and the Jets wouldn't have to change the offense if he has to play. Who would you have signed? Johnson wasn't expensive and bring speed and a dynamic presence to the Jets' offense. This team needed speed and playmakers on offense. Johnson supplies that and should help Geno immensely. We also know that the team loves to run the ball and plans to run the ball. Keeping the offense on the field longer and opposing offenses off, sustaining drives, and putting up more points will lead to more wins. Idzik DID add WR help in Decker, and he drafted Saunders, Evans and Enunwa. It's not as much as I would have liked, but in adding Amaro and Johnson, he added other receiving targets that can help Geno, the offense and the team sustain drives, score more points and win more games. As the old saying goes, there's more than one way to skin a cat.
I'm sure the NFL will be just as patient...as us JETS f..... yeaaa...uh NO! The NFL is not a patient league... Get it done.
Oh man. This is a special one... not even quite sure how to respond. Better off I just don't. Everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose.
