And lets be honest, Geno is a 2nd rounder because he was in the worst QB draft in a long time, if Geno was in this years draft he might fall into the 3rd round.
True but it could mean Sanchez is the best FA QB on the 2015 FA market at a time we realize we need a QB.
Geno showed enough last year to warrant a second look this year. He was mostly bad last year. He did have an up and down stretch to begin the year. With an okay performance against the Bucs, okay performance against the Pats (terrible end of the game throwing 3 picks), good performance against the Bills, bad against the Titans, good against the Falcons, bad against the Steelers, good against the Pats, bad against the Bengals, non factor against the Saints, horrendous against the Bills, Ravens and Dolphins. Then he bounced back with 4 solid performances to close the year. In those early good/okay games he showed flashes. Even in the early bad games he showed something. I see nothing wrong with giving Geno another year. They clearly saw flashes too. So they brought him back. They added Vick as an insurance. So it isn't like they have Simms or Boyd as his backup.
I would have taken another QB, Idzik is kinda tied now to Geno. If Geno busts then in year three he would have to hit a home run with whoever he chooses. I agree though Geno deserves to start this season.
If they passed on bringing back Revis. Then hell has to freeze over before they bring back Sanchez. I could see them drafting a QB early (2nd round) and having an open competition between Geno and Vick.
I guarantee you there will be a better option than Mark friggen Sanchez on the free agent market and if there isn't, there will probably be 3-5 QBs in the draft that would be worth taking a shot on before bringing back Sanchez.
Kordell Stewart Todd Collins Tony Banks Jake Plummer Charlie Batch Shaun King Quincy Carter Marques Tuiasosopo Drew Brees Kellen Clemens Tarvaris Jackson Kevin Kolb John Beck Drew Stanton Brian Brohm Chad Henne Pat White Jimmy Clausen Andy Dalton Colin Kaepernick Brock Osweiler Geno Smith Above is the list of QBs drafted the 2nd round for past 20 years. From this list I think only Banks, Dalton and Geno got an opportunity to start a full slate of games their rookie year. Dalton put up solid numbers while Banks was bad (but not as bad as Geno). If Banks was as bad as Geno, he would likely have been pulled. This is just some perspective to show how rare of an opportunity Geno has been given. 90+% of the guys on this list, most of the QBs drafted later and even a small number of guys drafted higher never got that opportunity. If they did, they would have to perform A LOT better than Geno did to get handed another year with NO true competition.
I mean lets be logical here... Mark Sanchez isn't good. Are you going to tell me the entire 2015 FA and draft QB class is going to be bad?
The Jets have to sell tickets. That's a huge part of the equation. Do you not remember Mark Sanchez getting booed at Madison Square Garden when he was shown on the Jumbotron? Whether Sanchez has a future as a starting QB is still up in the air but he doesn't have much of a future helping the Jets sell tickets in NY/NJ.
No but it's possible we might not be in position to draft the guys that are better than Sanchez if we were to win 9 games.
Personally, I wouldn't give a fuck about MSG fans when making personnel decisions as a GM but if that's how Idzik rolls, so be it.
Yeah Geno did get an opportunity albeit through difficult circumstances. Like I said though, he showed something. Hence why he's getting a shot in year 2. Vick was brought in as insurance in case Geno regresses. They didn't really just blindly gave him the starting job.
1. We couldn't afford to move up. Even if we wanted to. We had no depth and we needed to add talent. 2. We used a high pick on a QB the year before. So it's too soon to give up on Geno. Trading up for Bridgewater indicates that we are giving up on Geno. 3. They did the next best thing which was to take a flyer on a late round developmental QB.
