No but he has only had one football season up until this point. Do you expect everyone of his draft picks to be contributors right away? Not to mention the 2013 draft has netted us five starters, and two from this draft expect to immediate contributors.
Mo was NOT the DROY and Rex's worst defensive ranking since being the Jets HC was last year when Idzik was buying the groceries. That ranking was 11th by the way NOT top 1o for the first time in 5 years.
No I don't expect it but if that did happen maybe then I would kiss the ground he walked on the way many on this board do. Starting on last year's team was not really an accomplishment. Milliner, Winters and Geno started only because we had no one better to replace them. Their play for most of the year did not warrant starting. Bohannon is a fullback that can't block; didn't know such a creature existed until last year.
Regardless of that fact they still remain slotted to start this year with much improvement, at least hopefully. This can't be argued at this point because the season hasn't progressed at all. There in lies why the topic of the thread is urging patience.
I feel like this thread needs to take a nice long look at the "Rollover Money" thread. That's Idzik's strategy. It's either overspend on a corner this year when about 27 teams needed one and were willing to pay completely average guys like DRC 9+ million dollars, or wait until next year to draft one or sign one in free agency you really like. Other then Revis, who we were not going to sign for obvious reasons, the free agent class of corners this year was pretty weak. He took one in the 3rd round too if you guys forget, he just ended up going down for the season, which does suck. It's not like Idzik didn't address it, he just didn't feel it was THE top priority. If we spent the money / drafted a corner then we would have a weakness somewhere else.
The truth is if we had signed DRC or whomever you please, if they messed up or got injured we'd be in the exact same situation.
Only if his approach yields results on the field. That is the only thing that matters. To say he's building and adding depth is one thing. Yet if the personnel decisions that he's making are lending to building shitty, non-competitive depth on this roster then it's all for Not. So far his personnel record with the Jets is iffy. He's had some good draft picks and some very questionable picks as well. He's also passed on some very good CB FA's. This is a big year for the Jets on the field and for judging Idzik. Everyone needs to be held accountable.
What makes you think there'll even BE better corners available next year to save our money for? Since like you said 27 teams needed one and not all of them were able to upgrade the position this year.
Idzik had nothing to do with drafting Wilkerson in April 2011 when he didn't become the GM until January 2013.
I tend to agree. It is going to be a hindsight situation, unfortunately, because until he has success in the future you can't know if what he's doing today is worth a damn. I know the people in the "I heart Idzik" camp talk about this grand plan and everything falling into place but they don't know for sure that his plan is going to work out, they gloss over some of his questionable or just bad decisions, they can't say for sure that the guys he drafts will be players that contribute. Just having a plan is a good step but there are 31 other GMs that have plans, they can't all work out. I think there is a difference between having patience and having unquestioning belief in what is being done. I don't think by saying that he should have addressed the CB position better than he did is the same as have zero patience and a win now at all costs type of mentality. You can be critical of moves or non-moves without saying he's the worst GM of all time and should be fired immediately and we should sign every free agent available to giant contracts. In general I think we're moving in the right direction. I think it would have been good to address the CB position this year and lock it up for the next 4-5 years. He chose not to so I'm going to be critical on that because I think that was a good opportunity to improve the team now and for the future. Maybe he'll end up getting someone better next year for less money. Maybe he won't be able to address the CB position adequately next year either and it will be a continued area of weakness or he'll have to spend more money to get someone inferior to who he could have got this offseason. Again: Hindsight. We can't and won't know until that time.
Jesus no one has assumed yet the guy meant Richardson? You know, the player Idzik DID draft that DID win defensive rookie of the year? The sad truth is, this is why you can't rebuild in New York. It's always said about the Knicks but I feel like it goes double for the Jets because here we are in phase 2 of a legit rebuild and people are bitching. And I get wanting to win, but bitching about not signing Revis for $12 mil and one year or bitching about not signing DRC to a deal similar to what the Giants gave him shows a clear lack of understanding what rebuilding means. It's almost like we didn't just have a GM who spent and spent and spent and dug us the hole we are trying to get out of...
Oh I am sorry. My bad. Sheldon Richardson was AP Defensive Rookie of the year and M. Wilkerson had 10 and a half sacks with first alternate for Pro Bowl. "Worst Defensive Ranking?" I was waiting for you to say Rex had such a poor year we dropped to 20th in league. So in reality we missed being a Top Ten defense by ONE point, #11. Now.....if Idzik is not shopping at Wegmans well then that's what I call trouble! Lol
I think the reason people are impatient is because it doesn't even look like he's trying to field a decent team.
Bingo. People in this town have a "What have you done for me lately?" sort of mentality. Its always "Okay and?", not "Wow we've come a long way". People forget this Jets job was as least desirable as possibly can as evident by guys like Ross and Caldwell turning this gig down, arguably due to the roster, cap hell and having to keep Rex as the HC. This team was in cap hell and the talent, specifically the depth was lousy if not the worst in the NFL due to Mr. T trading picks away for veterans and having some mediocre drafts.(We had 3 picks in 09.............3). Idzik has taken us out of cap hell which we were in just a year ago to the point where we have so much free money floating around where we can now take care of a Mo Wilkerson or any other young upcoming talent(If we want Kerley, we can keep him). I have been a big fan of Idzik's work so far. Of course he has not been perfect but the fact that we HATE seeing guys go this preseason in the cut downs means we actually have some depth and talent on this team. I don't think it is a shocker that all 12 picks were not kept but 1/3 of those picks were late round, UNTRADEABLE comp. picks.
Well hey, if you guys want to pass the buck and blame Rex for all the defensive picks and Idzik having to deal with the 'scouting department' then why doesn't Rex get the credit when most of the defensive picks work out?
This team is better than the 12-13 ones. We actually have guys who can step in for an injured player, its just that one position in particular(CB) has been depleted with our top draft pick of last year hurt and our top CB pick this year gone for the year. You lose 2 guys you figure to take heavy snaps at one position, its not always going to look good.
More like because they could have had a really good team this year if they just fixed their main weakness (aside from the Geno question, which they did get a fallback for in Vick), which they didn't really try to do. Other than the QB question mark which is significant, if they'd done even just a little more with the CB position they'd have a top ten defense for sure - plus a fine running game with the three-headed monster and an improved receiver core with Morninghweg in his second year with the personnel. The fact we were seriously debating whether to bring in a reject from a CFL-level defense (Claiborne) at corner tells you how badly the CB position was botched.
This is a real opinion? Decker? Chris Johnson? Vick as insurance? On top of the fact you drafted a surefire starter at safety when your biggest weakness is your secondary? Then you draft a guy that set the NCAA record for receiving yards by a TE in one season? Come on. That's just lazy. I think the whole "blame Rex for defensive picks" narrative went out the window a few years ago.
