this is our worst secondary in decades.... only thing that can save it is a competent offense and a fierce pass rush. lets hope.
I don't know if the secondary is better than expected. But I do know, this being the Jets, that every completed pass is going to be dissected and criticized way out of proportion, and then on a week when we (maybe) don't give up 300 yards in the air, we'll be praised way out of proportion.
Oh really? And how do you figure that? This team has not played one regular season snap, yet you are crowning them the worst secondary in decades. Interesting logic
Didnt we have the 22nd ranked pass defense last season?I think we are worse at the position then we were last year.We atleast had Cro who had a bad year but still was a veteran presence who played decent in some games. Now we may not even have Millner and a Saftey converting to CB in Allen,The secondary is as bad as we think it is.Walls and Wilson are not gonna be able to hang with stud WRs the entire game
That's the point of this entire thing. We were ranked one of the worst in the league but we still held our own against excellent QBs and we still managed to end the season at 8-8, all with a rookie QB who was terrible for a majority of the year, a rookie corner who was benched a number of times, and a very terrible year from Cromartie. The point is, we can't get any worse. Cro being a veteran presence did nothing for this team. He sucked HUGE donkey dick last year. He was being burned game after game and was doing nothing to help the secondary.
Well you have a lot of stats there, but the four most important numbers are missing: 1. Completion percentage vs. Jets 2. Completion percentage vs. NFL 3. Passing yardage vs. Jets 4. Passing yardage vs. NFL
I already listed the passing yardage against us in those games and the passing yardage total for the year for each QB. If you are referring to average per game in yards, I can list that also: Matt Ryan: - Against Jets = 80% - Against NFL = 67.4% - Against Jets = 319 Yards - Against NFL = 282.2 Yards Tom Brady: - Against Jets = 48.25% - Against NFL = 60.5% - Against Jets = 206.5 Yards - Against NFL = 271.4 Yards Drew Brees: - Against Jets = 58.8% - Against NFL = 68.6% - Against Jets = 382 Yards - Against NFL = 322.6 Yards
Looking at individuals is too micro and can be affected by injuries, weather, etc.. No stat is perfect but using an entire season is much more viable than using individual games.
Couldn't find NFL totals and don't feel like doing the math but the Jets ranked 22 in yards allowed for the season. Surprisingly, they were number 8 in completion percent allowed. Can you say "Burned Deep?"
Hmmmm...lots of optimism here. For everyone knocking Cromartie..he was hurt...shouldn't have even been on the field. I would take him over everyone but Milliner..and its only if Milliner is the guy who played the last 4 games..not the first 12 when he was benched twice. After watching that preseason, I have no idea how anyone could be positive about what our GM did concerning that position. Having a good feeling about Pryor will help in the middle of the field but thats not where I saw the party this preseason. I saw guys getting beat like college db's outside. Cromartie was a proven commodity that was hurt....hurt. Anyone think that a Walls or Allen (1 preseason game at the position ever) a Wilson or a Lankster? Guys...the position sucks. The GM made a mistake...a big one...and hopefully the team picks up something in the next few days. The only saving grace will be if we get great pressure from our front line to mask it..other then that?
Yup. Cromartie sucking ass, Milliner being a rookie, and bad play from the safety position. We didn't have a ball hawk like Pryor back there
and christ..its not being a half glass full pessimist stating that...so before anyone goes with "oh shit..another guys saying the sky is falling". Anyone taking the view that the db position is fine needs to be examined a lot closer then a guy saying Idzik fucked up the position. Its not even close.
No one is saying that the db position is fine. What I am saying, and what many other posters are saying, is that it can't get much worse than last year. Whether Cro was injured or not, he was terrible. Milliner was terrible and we had no ball hawk at safety to help out. We were beat deep weekly, which is where we failed miserably. We have a more experienced Milliner and a possible ball hawk at safety. The only direction we can go is up. It would be pretty damn difficult to get worse from last year.
ok..will buy this. The only part I still have trouble with is that it could have been better. I dont care about the carry over cap money etc. When you have a potential top 3 defense...you dont go into a season with this secondary when we had the money...we had about 6 guys to choose from...and another guy that went to the Patriots and we did nothing at all. Nothing. I like Idzik although nobody here can honestly say he knows talent yet....but the bottom line is he fucked up BADLY...VERY BADLY this year. Very badly...and only lady luck will bail him out..not talent.
