You're taking this slimly defensible perspective and magnifying the significance of every component that gives your argument validity and minimizing anything that doesn't. From where I'm sitting the truth is that he's had a couple of opportunities here and there to go and steal the show, and maybe they weren't the best opportunities ever, but he hasn't done what was needed up to this point. He's looked fine to me most of the time, good here and there, and not so good for the remainder. Nothing to make me say, holy shit here's the next star NFL QB sitting 3rd on our roster. But also nothing to make me say he couldn't be a more than competent backup, or even possibly a starting QB with a ceiling somewhere around middle of the pack for the league. Unlikely to hit that ceiling, probably, but he hasn't shown me he couldn't be that good at least.

You say he's got that kind of talent and more? Fine. Here's his big chance in an hour, let him go and light up the Eagles defense non-stop. Fit a couple TD passes into Hill's breadbasket to make him look like he's a mismatch against backups whether it's really the case or not. Then carry Simms on the roster throughout the season, get rid of Vick next year and have an open QB competition with Geno depending on how he looks this year when it actually matters.

Geno has more upside to me and he's looked quite sharp in the preseason. I don't want the cinderalla story, I want Geno to just be our good QB no muss no fuss. But it would also be awesome if Simms could go out and look like a man against boys in his first real chance this year. Then we'd have a viable backup for years, and an outside chance at that fairy tale you want so badly if Geno falters next year or gets injured. If Simms doesn't light it up this game your argument is irreversibly invalid. If he does, hopefully the FO has the sense to keep him on the roster and groom him to be the real #2 next year and let it progress naturally from there.

He did exactly what you're asking him to do against the Eagles last preseason. Yeah, you're not going to get your hair blown back by a guy that is playing with a bunch of never-will-be's, but if you are looking at his game, you will see the strongest arm on the team by far, even counting Vick, a guy with touch and accuracy, and instinct for the position.

If Simms looks average tonight, I'll shut up about him. I won't ever mention his name again. But from what I have seen, the guy has the stuff to take it to the next level and just needs someone to give him a shot. It's not going to happen with this team barring a very unlikely double injury scenario. But if the Jets try to stash him on the PS this time around, he's a goner. I'm sure of it.

You can't have it both ways. You're telling me that if you threw Peyton Manning into Simms' spot tonight that he wouldn't tear that defense to shreds regardless of who he throws the ball to, assuming he doesn't get paralyzed in the process? If he's the next Peyton like you say, he should shit all over these defensive nobodies no matter who is on his team. Now he's even got an extra year of experience in the league and a couple of plays in the regular season last year, there's no excuse tonight he should destroy or it's discussion over.

I don't remember too many specifics about his preseason start last year. I just remember that he looked pretty good, just like several of our nobody third stringers have in the past 10 years before fading into obscurity. Didn't look too hard but couldn't find stats for that game, all I did find is that he completed like 51% of passes for ~60 QBR in 3 regular season games last year. Let him go out and complete 70%+ tonight and then we'll talk. My vivid memory of him last year is when he got his first shot in a regular season game it was like 3rd and 8 and he dove high and head first into a perfectly positioned LB to try to get the first down. He came up a yard short and was probably more likely to get himself paralyzed than the 1st down. At least that told me that he wants it if nothing else.

Holy shit, leap logic much? I'm talking about a guy that I believe can make it to the next level, not a HOF football computer. Blow it out your ass with that Manning stuff, you're reaching.

Just like I barely remember that Dolphins game I just shit the bed with against junc, you don't remember what happened in that Eagles game. I watched that game 5 times just to make sure my eyes weren't fooling me. It wasn't just the level of competition he was facing, I watched his mechanics and composure and accuracy, he looked very impressive, and it couldn't be explained away with the level of competition.

Was it a fluke? I don't think so, since he also showed up well in the other games, but we'll see tonight, won't we? If he looks average or just above average, I'm not going to bother with him, but I don't think that's what is going to happen.

    Game time. Pce.

Well how far down the list are you trying to go before it becomes a legitimate point? How about Russell Wilson? Roethlisberger? Romo?

You want me to take you seriously when you're saying it's just fine if Simms looks like the next Chad Henne as an UDFA but it's all good because he doesn't have enough experience yet? Come on. It's game time, he better shit or get off the pot.

"How far down the list"? Is that a joke? You started with one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the forward pass, and now you're trying to make a point by naming a guy that's a glorified backup. Do you even realize how much you are going to extremes? I'm not comparing Simms to anyone. You are apparently trying to make a point, very badly.

My whole point which you've now proven is that you don't want to compare him to anybody because you're trying to delude yourself into keeping faith in him no matter how good he does or doesn't look objectively. So far he made two useless dumpoffs and had one nice throw go right through the hands of the same bum that you were talking up in this very thread. Now he just threw it away down the field and handed it off and threw a pathetic ball into triple coverage that should've been an INT. Where's the franchise QB? I'm not seeing him just yet.

Man, you're trying hard now. One dumpoff was a decent decision, the nice throw was masterful into a heavily conferred area, then the next dumpoff was during a play that has been called a neutral zone violation every time the Jets are on defense, but this time it's just a run of the mill play.

I'm behind, so I'm not going to be arguing with you real time, but please go on with your critique.

Well for players like Stephen Hill, it is now or never since it is the final preseason game of 2014!

So.... about my earlier comments... I guess Simms isn't what I thought he was.

    So much for that.

The 4th preseason game should NOT be about if a 3rd year WR makes the team. I'll be pissed if Hill gets 15 balls while bubble guys get ignored.

I don't think Hill getting anything is a problem at this point. He body'd the two passes that went his way, one of which he managed to let slip away for a drop.

Yea, Simms is looking like some hot dooky, he's well on his way to pulling a McElroy. QB in the 4th next year?

This is what happens when you draft a wide receiver because you like that he comes from a college offense that required him to run block. Holy fuck.

Guess Hill is making the decision easy for the brass.

Anything short of a broken leg he should be itching and bitching to get out there.

This is your roster spot on an NFL team at stake and your standing there looking like you lost your dog?

    GTFOH.

Simms continues to look like shit. He's lucky Boyd is even worse. As for Hill... he just LOOKS defeated.

At this point, I'm actually hoping that Simms is waived and MAYBE brought onto the PS. Seems like a pretty bad game for him. I've seen much better.
