Ha - then I don't agree with you. If the table was level, I think Simms would perform as well or better than Geno. He'll never get the chance to prove that with this team. Politics and such.

nothing about Hill screams athletic... He is straight line speed not a shifty player he gets bullied by Dbs all the time so what would make you think he could do the Bullying? Not to mention he cant really catch so it would be a waste of time and I really cant see him hitting anybody.

Simms won't get a real chance because fairy tales don't happen in the NFL very often. A second round draft pick and a UDFA are never on the same plane of competitive evaluation from the perspective of the team. If Geno totally flunked out the Jets would go draft another young QB who would also be in a non-competition with Simms.

Part of this is that Simms just hasn't shown enough to get a real look as a starting QB at this point. Unlike Kurt Warner he hasn't had NFL Europe to show his stuff in. A UDFA has to have a platform that is independent of the team's training facilities and practices in order to get a real look. For Simms to get a real look he would have to look as good as almost any QB in the league in the short and infrequent opportunities he has to show his stuff. Just being promising will mean nothing. He has to look great.

Matt Simms has two very slim chances to be an NFL starting QB at this point. 1) both guys in front of him get hurt and the Jets have to play him and he looks great. 2) he decides to go play Arena Football or in the CFL and gets a starting job there where he can perform in a way that nobody can deny the talent. Kurt Warner blew away NFL Europe the spring before he got his big chance with the Rams. When he came to camp Vermeil and Martz already thought they had a strong starting QB that was going to blindside the NFL. Camp was confirmatory and the rest is history.

I think it doesn't matter how many catches Hill makes.
The Jets know who he is and what he is capable of.

I think they let him go.
Idzik has no ties to him and frankly there's no place for him.

He is the Darius Heyward-Bey of the Jets.
Just tease. All speed, no hands, no heart.

    See ya Stephen!!!

I think he has to make some impact plays. RAC, Red zone Td's, 50/50 balls wherein he is taking the ball that is perfectly played and or almost intercepted by a db.. He has to show he is worthy of being a high second round draft pick, be a mismatch. Can he be counted on in 3rd and long or 3rd and short even? Can he out jump 5'11" db's? This is what I'm looking for. He's a Jet, I root for the Jets therefore, I want to see him do well. If he cant perform, I'd prefer we give the opportunity to someone who hasn't had it yet.

Simms won't get a chance with this team because of politics and nothing else. I've read this story from you multiple times, and each time is sounds like a predetermined and strict and unimaginative outlook on reality.

If Trent Green hadn't gone down in 1999, chances are that maybe a tiny handful of people would remember the backup QB of the Rams that stocked groceries while his bird-faced loudmouth wife figured out what drapes looked good in the livingroom. But Green did get his knee destroyed by Rodney Harrison, and Vermeil got desperate, and the team politics were thrown out the window, and the rest is history. There have undoubtedly been dozens of potential franchise quarterbacks shuffled away because of things like executive preference, draft position and opportunities not given, not even mentioning terrible scouting.

Simms has every tool he needs to compete as a starter in this league, but he is on a team that doesn't believe in him for the most part (although if you listen to the interview that David Lee gave about him the other day, you'd know that it's mainly the decision makers that don't buy Simms). If the Jets do intend to waive Simms and sign him to the practice squad, I'm betting that he never makes it there. And then we may see some team with the right amount of desperation and imagination to go against the grain. I just hope it's not an AFC team.

The good thing for Simms is that he really does have a positive attitude about his situation, which echoes what his father has said about his time with the Jets, and even though he sounds like a doofus frat bro when he speaks, I think he may just have the right mechanics and poise at his position to take a step the Jets aren't willing to afford him.

Time will tell. Chances are that he'll never get the chance to show what he really has on a big stage, but if he does get that chance, god help us.

It doesn't have anything to do with politics. Simms is a backup and teams aren't going to invest the time needed to develop a UDFA QB as their starter. When Simms relieved Geno in the Miami game that was his shot. He doesn't get the benefit of time that a Geno will get. So whatever opportunities he gets he has to absolutely hit it out the ballpark. He failed so they went back to Geno for the last 4 games.

Simms is making the team and hopefully he'll be our longterm backup. I don't expect Vick to be here more than a year or 2 at most. he got a chance last year and he looked like he wasn't ready, hopefully the next time he plays he will show that he is ready.

It has everything to do with politics, sorry if you aren't comfortable with that. When Simms releived Geno in that Miami game, the Oline was tired and not protecting anyone, yet Simms still was able to move somewhat in the pocket and complete some passes, where a shitty backup would just have gotten sacked a few times and spent the rest of the game burning clock and handing the ball off. That game was a disaster, and don't pretend that Miami's pass rush isn't a scary thing against an Oline that's out of sorts. Dumbass argument.

They went back to Geno because they never wanted to go away from him to begin with. Simms has never had time with the 1s in his career.

But when you really really think about it, what can he actually do tonight against backups that would allow him to secure his job?

come on now- tired and not protecting? so now in addition to the coaches wanting him to fail his teammates did as well?

If the coaches felt he was their best option he would be getting a shot.

Geno wasn't ready last year but neither was Simms so of course you stick w/ the guy you spent a 2nd rd pick on b/c obviously they believed in his talent. If Simms was blowing away coaches in practice we'd hear about it and he'd eventually get a shot. When 6th rd pick Tom Brady was in camp in 2001 the coaches became confident in him b/c he was blowing them away. Matt has his opportunity every day, he hasn't taken advantage of it yet.

Most of what you're saying is valid. A QB needs time to develop and get chemistry and practice with the 1's. But he's a UDFA no team is going to bench their drafted QB to give time to a UDFA QB. The circumstances in the Miami game lent Simms no favors. But if he wants to be taken serious as a starter then he goes out there and kills it. He forces the Jets to give him a serious look. Instead all he did was justify why they don't view him as nothing but a backup. Geno was a high 2nd round pick it makes sense to go back to him. It was the right decision. They may not have wanted to go away from Geno. But once Simms got his shot and had he played well they would've went back to Simms.

Simms has been blowing coaches away, and we (meaning people who watch all of the interviews) have heard them (meaning coaches that don't have a team-changing decision in the matter), but it's been about Geno since day one. Hell, Vick didn't have a shot at the starting job, and he's played at a pro bowl level under Marty M. You really think that Simms was going to get a chance? It's documented fact that Geno was the starter from day 1, even Vick has been saying it for months.

What shot did Simms get? To be inserted into a blowout during garbage time with a bunch of players who he had minimal if any playing time with?

sure but if Simms was playing as well as you say then he'd either be showcased for a trade or they'd cut Vick b/c they have confidence in Matt. Geno was the starter, he played well to end last season and has had a good camp. we never hear about Simms, sure he was better than Boyd but that's not saying much at this point in time. I like Simms, I hope he develops into a longtime backup for us.

he was inserted to begin the 2nd half of that game where we trailed 6-0 when he entered the game. it wasn't garbage time. he actually had 2 possessions trailing by only 6.

Tonight may be the showcase you are talking about. It's not like they were going to put Simms into game 3 during the second quarter. This game is the one where teams look at other teams the most, because this is the game that the bubble players get the spotlight.

Yeah well maybe I was a little too shit-hammered during that game, but the fact remains that Geno had no time to throw and the trend continued in the second half, but Simms played with better poise in that shit situation and hadn't really played with the 1s during practice all season. That's not being given a shot, it's being thrown into an untenable situation.

When you're a UDFA that constitutes as a shot. That's the reality of the situation. Had he went in there and played relatively well there would've been a controversy and Simms might've forced their hands into giving him a real shot.
