These are so bleh. How do you compare two coaches when one has Tom Brady for like 14 years or whatever it is, and another is working with Sanchez/Geno at QB? Not saying Rex is as good as or better than Belichick, but just that it's pretty damn hard to evaluate them without letting outside factors influence you. I, for one, am very curious as to how Belichick will do once Brady retires. He wasn't exactly hot stuff in Cleveland or in NE with Bledsoe, so we will see (unless the bastard retires with Brady to preserve his legacy ). This was always a thing that pissed me off with basketball and Phil Jackson. Everybody always kissing his ass like he is the second coming, although the guy basically won titles with the most loaded teams in the league by far, and some of the all time greats. Obviously he did have some talents, such as the ability to manage egos and all that, but I always had a lot more respect for a guy like Larry Brown, who took much less talented teams to the top.
What I'd like to know is why do these rankings change from year to year. 2 years ago it was everyone all about the Harbaugh's. Now because Pete Carroll finally won a Superbowl he's the 2nd best coach in the NFL? After 20 years of being mediocre? After the Giants 2nd Superbowl win a few years ago people were putting Coughlin's name ahead of Belicheck. Now he's middle of the pack? Tomlin to me is the most overrated coach in the league and Lovie and Fox arent far behind. And not for nothing but lets just say Rex was the head coach in Green Bay..or New Orleans. He would be considered by many as a top 5 coach. But because he's had bad QB play over his career he's in the 3rd tier. Its nonsense.
Just based on the number, a little low for me. I would have put him in the 11-15 range. Someone gave him a 5 (the worse) because he didn't like Rex talking which isn't giving him a ranking based on his coaching ability. Lovie Smith and Marvin Lewis ahead of Rex was interesting to me. Maybe I'm thinking more of the now than their whole careers. Whole careers, this is probably more accurate putting Rex at around 17 and Carroll at #2, even though it's an odd way of ranking coaches who have coached for a lot of different teams over a lot of different years. No surprise Bill is #1. That was expected
Same Jordan + Pippen Collins never got over the hump that is Detroit Pistons. Phil Jackson did. That has to mean something, no?
Okay I understand Rex might not be the best but he isn't as low as 17th either. There is one thing I always say. IF Rex had an average or slightly above average QB and offensive weapons, he would make play offs regularly. I think Rex is easily a Top 10 coach. There are certain names on the original list that I would never put ahead of Rex. John Fox, Jeff Fisher, Mike McCarthy, Lovie Smith etc are all overrated imho.
I don't agree with the rankings for a lot of the guys. I would do some shuffling around, but I'd say 17th is about accurate for Rex. I also don't think it's fair to rank the brand new HCs... they should leave them out until they coach a game or two but I will say I think Pettine will be a better coach than what this ranking has him.
The only one out of your list I'd say Rex might be better than is Fisher. McCarthy is no contest, and Fox and Smith I'd say are better all around coaches.
Maybe its me being conspiracy theory guy, but I do really think ESPN has something against the Jets. It just seems like the Jets take a brunt of the ESPN criticism even when its underserving. I mean I thought it would slow down after the game against the Giants. The Giants line looked awful, so I thought they would get eaten alive by the NY Radio stations. Instead, I'm still hearing about the Jets secondary and how monumental the loss of Dmitri Patterson is. Secondary was going to be below average whether Patterson is there or not. One gripe about the list is what has Chip Kelly done to put himself above Rex Ryan?
Well for starters he won a division title. Something Rex hasn't done. Kelly has only coached one season so obviously there's not a long history to draw from. When he's going into Year 6 like Rex is I have no doubt he'd have a much more to say for. He's one of the best young coaches in this league and his ability to coach offenses and QBs is going to make him successful for a long time.
So I guess that means that after year 1, Rex would have been the 3rd or 4th best coach in football? Playoff wins > Division Titles IMO. Thats exactly my point. I have nothing against Chip Kelly. I actually think he has a promising future ahead of him. But all he did was win a crappy division in his first year. To be considered one of the top coaches I think you need a bit more of a track record. Again, all my opinion, but I think Chip Kelly higher than Rex right now is a joke.
who compiled these rankings? looks like a joke to me. BB was a complete failure w/o Brady. couglin has made one postseason since 2009 and he's top 5? Tomlin inherited a potential dynasty and has just 1 SB win against a 9-7 team. Fisher at 11? seriously? Harbaugh's at 8 & 9? what a joke of a list
he won the weakest division in football, he didn't have the Pats to worry about. title game apps are much better than div titles going 1 and done.
In the regular season the Jets are 4 games better than their pythagorean win projection over Rex's 5 years coaching them. That's .8 wins a year better than expected. I'd be really surprised if there were more than a handful of coaches that have done better over that span. I think Rex is a top 10 coach.
Crazy list. Rex's score is skewed because one voter gave him a 5 out of pettiness. So what does that say for the rest of the votes? I'd rather have Rex than everyone below him and instead of at least Coughlin, Tomlin, Fox, Fisher, Smith & Lewis of those ahead of him. Jury's still out on Kelly, Pagano & Arians, but they don't belong ahead of Rex right now.
This list is a load of shit. If it wasn't for Tom Brady, Rex would have 4 division titles. Chuck Pagano "LUCKed" out. John Fox is a great coach even after all those terrible years in Carolina? Oh you mean because now he has Peyton Manning. I'm pretty sure I could rank in the top 15 if Manning or Brady was my QB and I don't know shit about football. Another biased poll. I hope the Jets get ranked 32nd again this year.
Can't try to point fingers at ESPN, this is just a poll. I'm actually happy he is middle of the pack. I would have thought his peers would rank him lower since he is so out of the box in his style. I could easily have seen us bitching about how he was ranked in the bottom five.
I find it hard to believe that they found 16 coaches who could've done better with the talent the Jets had. I feel like the success of the coach and the success of the GM are perceived to go hand in hand.
Rex could've made a stronger push for Peyton Manning but he thought he'd like to remain committed to Mark Sanchez. So while you want to discredit Fox for having success with Manning you at the very least should take that into consideration.
