A guy that many felt would be a bust has had a remarkable preseason so far! With him having a solid year, we may have a great offensive line once again. According to Pro Football Focus, Winters has let up one QB hurry in 123 preseason snaps. Props to you big man!! Keep it rolling!
Hopefully he is a mainstay at that LG position for the next 10+ years... Now I only have to worry about RG and not both.
I hope he is improved but this doesn't mean a whole lot of anything. He was "okay" last year when he could get his hands on the defenders, where he struggled the most was recognizing the blitzes and stunts and actually getting his hands on those defenders. In the preseason nobody blitzes and it's a lot easier to recognize who to hit so he's had a pass as far as his biggest weakness. So there is not much to be taken from this. In the regular season, teams will run stunts and blitz the hell out of him because it's on film that he struggles there. He's still very much a question mark lets not crown him. I respect Pro Football Focus a lot but they should stick to the regular season - things like this cheapen their overall reputation.
PFF can be useful for a lot of things, but there's no way in hell they know what blocking schemes are being used to determine what lineman is assigned where.
No one is claiming that he is the savior at the tackle position. Whether it was preseason or not, to go from the season last year to allowing one rush on the QB in 123 preseason snaps, is impressive. In fact, it was the best of our entire offensive line this preseason. It's a big step in the right direction. He deserves much respect for the way he has been playing this offseason. Let's see if it translates into the regular season.
The Colts actually blitzed the hell out of us in game 1. Still, no way PFF knows who was supposed to block where.
i agree about winters weakness last year but the bold is not true anymore. teams arent using exotic packages, but they are most certainly blitzing in the pre-season ... even in the first game, the colts were blitzing quite often im surprised that no one has spoken about willie colon, he has been weak sauce this preseason ... he completely whiffed on three separate occasions in the giants game if this competition mantra were true, aboushi would be starting over colon
The only team that didn't blitz much against the Jets 1st stringers was Cincy. Colts blitzed a whole helluva lot& the Giants brought some 5 man blitzes. Maybe charting OL preseason stats is taking it alittle too far but Winters is definitely passing the eyeball test compared to last season. He had hand placement, balance & leverage issues last year. He appears much better on his feet, more aggressive with his hands & much better pad level than last year. I don't think it's unreasonable to point out such things. Especially how bad we all killed him last season
Yeah, Willie Colon has been bitch slapped more than Tina Turner this preseason. Can't believe he's actually starting.
You wanna put that #75 Aboushi guy in at guard, ok, but no way should that dancing bear be put out 'in space' at tackle (like I've seen in some 2nd half scenarios this pre-season).
I hate Colon and I wish they would bench him. I could live with the growing pains of fitting in a young OL in his place.
I have noticed he looks much improved in the preseason, that said I was very skeptical about him before so I'll believe it when I see it in regular season. Colon still sucks, new RT has seemed alright without focusing on him much at all.
Breno Giacomini... He seems like Mr. Average. He does well against the run of the mill bull rushers and he gets filled by stunts and struggles against speed rushers. And he's bound to cost us a handful of after the whistle flags and probably another handful of false starts. I'm guessing we're seeing his ceiling, but maybe he'll surprise.
Good to see. We NEED to get younger and better at the 0-line keep our momentum going. Hopefully were set at guards for the next 10 years in Oboushi and Winters.
According to PFF though he's also graded out as a -4.7. But to be fair.... 1. It's a small sample size 2. He's slightly below average in pass and run blocking (they rate his screen blocking as the biggest problem along with the penalties in which 4 of his 5 came against the Bengals) 3. He looks to have definitely improved from last year when he was awful.
Agreed, but I don't think they claim to know that. I think the site is great, very useful, and a good indicator of a players performance. But of course it has it's flaws as well, it's definitely not perfect.
