McDougle looked good before he went down, and guess what? Usually anything past a 3rd round pick takes time to develop. Not to mention IK Enemkpali looks good, as well as Jeremiah George. As a matter of fact, the only player we drafted who looks downright bad is Tajh Boyd. The fact that only 1 of 12 picks looks like poop is actually very impressive.
He did sign a FA corner. Patterson. Granted that looks like a bad move at the moment but it's not always worth it to throw big money at a FA. Realistically, who did you want? The Jets were probably not going to get involved with Revis again. DRC was great last year and is talented but also inconsistent. He was bad in Philly. Talib's good but he's not worth that contract. Denver gave it to him because Peyton Manning is at the end and their trying to win it all. We have Milliner, they drafted McDougle in the third round, and he signed a veteran in Patterson to a cheap contract hoping he can outperform it just like he did with guys like Babin, Vick, Chris Johnson, and Barnes. Milliner got hurt, McDougle tore his ACL, and Patterson has been banged up and then went AWOL for reasons still unknown. You can't predict that stuff is going to happen. The Jets have been more unlucky then stupid at approaching this position IMO. The only "mistake" they might have made was letting Cro walk. It wouldnt have hurt to have had him to help bring along young players like Milliner and McDougle. But I like Idzik's approach, he wants cap flexibility. During the last few years of the Tannenbaum era it felt like we were always right up against the cap, when your in that spot it's hard to address other needs that might pop up.
It's hard to believe this is still a conversation at this point. Our front 7 is going to give QB's major problems. A few big time weapons might make some plays here and there but if the QB consistently scrambling for his life they cannot pick apart a secondary. People always forget how important it is to establish a run game as an offense. It forces defenses to stay honest and keep safeties in the box, and QB's can then exploit single coverages. Our defensive front is so good at stopping the run that we are more free to use our safeties deeper in coverage and blitzes. We can generate a solid pass rush without rushing more than 4 so when we do bring more it will be very hard for an offensive line to account for that. When we move guys around the line pre snap, it forces the QB to stop thinking about the play and attempt to read the defense. Any distraction works to our benefit.
When the Jets are a player or two away from SB contention, it will be nice having the $20M on hand to bring in a few key FAs (versus restructuring half your vets to come up with the cash). Restructuring usually means giving the vet a huge signing bonus now which is spread out over the remaining rears, which means moving tons of dead money down the road. (I learned that from Tanny). It's great for today but 2-3 years down the road you're paying them twice what you should be and you can't cut them b/c it will all escalate into that year's cap. Cap space = flexibility to manage a team without mortgaging the future.
For you guys having a difficult time grasping or getting on board with the idea of "long-term," just think of it, instead, as a foundation for sustainable success, hopefully beginning now.
So Idzik should have just gone out and blown the money on players regardless if they can help the team long term or not or fit into the Jets' systems just so they use up the money and fans can't claim they shouldn't be sitting there $20 MM cap space? Do you see how stupid that sounds? Cro was lit up last year, has never bothered to learn the basic fundamentals of his position and is getting older. He's gotten by on speed and athleticism alone, and as he ages those will be the first things to leave him. So it would have been smart to give him a buttload of money to come back? Revis is the past, is a selfish, greedy prick who cares only about himself, and is a major headache. He'd have been holding out again next spring wanting to be the highest paid player in the game again. I don't blame Woody one bit for not wanting to re-sign his greedy ass. I was glad to see Revis go, and re-signing him would have been totally stupid. Some of you guys need to grow up and wise up. The Jets had a lot of holes this off-season. In all likelihood, even with Revis and anyone of the other FA CBs, the Jets would not have gone anywhere in the playoffs even if they made them. Idzik was smart not to go all in this year. He's saving his resources for players who can help this team long terms. He chooses to build the team the way teams should be built...through the draft, not, like that moron Tanny, by handing out huge contracts to big ticket FAs. We finally have a professional GM who's going about things the right way, and we have Jets fans screaming because he's not the second coming of Tanny. You gotta love Jets fans.
The point is that to a reasonable person there is a clear difference between a playoff team and a true SB contender. For instance: last year Broncos, 49ers, and Seahawks very very good and considered true SB contenders. Last year, Colts were in the playoffs but very clearly outclassed, as were the Packers as they were having a down year and got blasted by the 49ers. If he is going to argue that technically any team who is in the playoffs can contend for the SB, that is just fucking semantics and is just trying to pointlessly argue. Thus, the same can be said for any team no matter how bad, because technically right now they are all SB contenders as they have equal records.
I love how every Corner on the market wasn't worth paying for,I guess we are smarter then the teams that signed those guys .Look at the situation we are in right now ,We signed Patterson instead of someone reliable and the guy doesn't even want to be here
What does long term have to do with the cornerback problem?None of you guys are making any kind of sense. Our secondary is the result of being cheap .We went to two AFC championship games because Mr T spent money, say what you want about it but its the best this franchise has done since 1969.I'll take one Superbowl over "building long term".This isn't baseball or basketball we only get 16 games a year and this is a win now league no one wants to hear this garbage. You guys are gonna be talking about Idziks master plan until the day he is fired. The guy has has a degree in mathmatics in my opinion he is being to careful with the cap money and trying to hit home runs with cheap talent and so far he has struck out every time
You don't get it, man. Once the Qb is in place, there's a way to operate so that the team is a Playoff team every year. That's about as good of a chance to win the SB as you can ask for.
I didn't say every corner wasn't worth paying for. I mentioned those 3. Revis is worth paying for but the Jets realistically were not going to go down that road again. It's not about being smarter. The Broncos are in a win now mode. You have to look at the situation teams are in. Giants overpaid for DRC, he's overrated. The Broncos gave Talib that contract because they are trying to win THIS YEAR. The Jets are getting better, but they're still in a sort of rebuilding mode. They're not in a spot where they need to throw $57 million at a corner when they drafted one 9th overall last year. That money can be used in other areas right now. If Milliner struggles, or nobody else steps up to fill that other spot across from him, then maybe Idzik takes a different approach next off season. But i'm not going to kill him right now because we didnt sign Talib or DRC.
It's hard to know whether LIBlitz is even serious. It's like he takes the absolute most dramatic stance on everything, I don't think I can take him seriously at all.
We have 21 Mil in cap space to roll over into next year for re-signing important key players on the team, and people are complaining and criticizing the organization for not using that money on useless CB's who are currently FA's right now to "help" the team, clearly there are reasons nobody wants guys who are still FA's with a week until the season starts. It's because they _ _ _ _! Fill in the blank (hint: it's a 4 letter word, and it starts with "s")
If you make it to the Super Bowl then you are a Super Bowl contender. If you make it to the playoffs you are only a divisional round contender.
