Folks, we're back again, and this time we're tackling the controversial issue of seatbelt laws.

While many "road safety experts" with "science degrees" from "accredited universities" feel that seat belts drastically reduce road deaths and injuries, none of them has ever been able to cite any Constitutional or Biblical evidence in support of their theory.

On the other hand, many folks believe that seatbelts are merely a "cash grab" designed by the Seatbelt-Industrial Complex to separate hard-working Americans from their dollars.

Others point out that sometimes cars explode after accidents, and not wearing a seatbelt allows those in the front seats to be safely ejected headfirst through the windshield.

And of course there is the Motorcycle Hypothesis. This theory holds that since there are no seatbelts required on motorcycles, they must be useless in automobiles.

Despite the stirring controversy on seatbelts, states have enacted seatbelt laws issuing fines to those who don't wear them. Where do you stand? Do you buy into the whole "science" argument that says that these laws save lives? Or is it a violation of our freedom?

Buckle up (or not) and get ready to sound off in the comments below.

I wear mine. When I was 17 and my friends and I all got our licenses and couple of the guys were racing around the corner hit each other and one of my best friends died. He was ejected thru the windshield. Another hit the windshield bit survived. Since then ive always worn a seat belt. Ive seen them save lives and I def believe it.

That being said. I think there should be laws for children, but adults should be allowed to make their own decisions.

I am in favor of natural selection. In other words if you're too fucking stupid to put a seatbelt on, well ... hopefully you haven't reproduced.

Are there really still people that think it's a "cash grab"? That sounds like a wacky ass idea from the 70s. Kinda like how people were anti-microwaves back in the day because they thought it took all the nutrition out of the food

I'm in favor of not having to pay your hospital bills when you are a quadraplegic or a vegetable. Wear the fucking belts.

Now baby seats on the other hand, what a fucking rook.

Yes, one guy on this forum does. Tennessee Jet or something like that is his handle, that's where I got the phrase "cash grab" from.

I'll admit up front that I expect this to be a weaker Debate Club thread, but hopefully some anti-seatbelt people will emerge and liven things up with a lively debate.

Wow really now? It kinda doesnt make any sense to have a seatbelt on a motorcycle. Totally different engineering designs.

Fuck seatbelts. Everytime I smash my car into something I put my fists up and punch strait through the windshield so I don't hurt my face on the glass.

Well normally I would say if you are too dumb to wear one then good for you when you are flung from the car but since there are circumstances where there could be survivors that need to call for emergency or help save others in the car, I'm okay with fines for not wearing them.

I'm indifferent. Some times I wear it, sometimes I don't. When I'm in my jeep and that stupid beeping doesn't stop I'll put it on but when I'm in my van making deliveries I very rarely wear it

Baby's and small children should ride Shark Fin on the top of the vehicle, preferably in a child seat but fastened to the car with spit, bubblegum and tooth floss if such an apparatus is not available.

Imagine the nerve of those faceless bureaucrats in Washington mandating that babies ride safe and secure. What's wrong with them! This is America the land of the brave...

SUV's and minivans have one of the highest fatality rates of any vehicle because of the tendency for them to roll over in a collision. Pickup trucks have high fatality rates due to their poor handling on slick surfaces when they're not loaded. The cargo space is engineered to be as light as possible so that the maximum cargo can be carried. This makes an unloaded pickup on an icy road a constant threat to spin out. Compact cars are the worst because of the tendency for them to become about 6 feet long or 3 feet wide in a bad accident depending on where they were hit.

Large passenger cars have the lowest fatality rates, because they have the most safety devices installed, they don't accordion the way a small car does and they roll over less often than any other category of vehicle. Large vans are next best. They don't have as many safety devices but they also don't take a huge structural beating unless they get hit by a truck or another big van.

Wearing a safety belt makes you 50% less likely to be seriously injured or die in an automobile accident than going freebird.

If you're not going to wear the belt though then you should also consider turning off the air bag. You'll die more often with the airbag off but you'll be paralyzed less often. The study done in 2008 by Spine, a peer-reviewed medical journal found that drivers without seatbelts or airbags were 32% more likely to be paralyzed in an accident but drivers without seatbelts but the airbag on were 70% more likely to be crippled for life. So if you're a freebird type turn off your airbag also. Better to be dead than paralyzed for life, right?

It takes about 5 seconds of awareness to go from sitting comfortably in your car to having the steering wheel take off one of your legs as you are ejected from the vehicle. The pain of the leg is only momentary though. You'll be dead after you slide 50 feet along the concrete face first taking off your face as well. It's too bad you can't bleed out from the severed femoral artery fast enough to avoid the face on pavement thing, but then again you're brave, right?

Watch Zombieland for a really good demonstration of this principle.

I should have been more specific in terms of van. It isn't a minivan -- a delivery van where I took the 3 back rows out. So like you said, not many cars or vehicles have the capability of causing major damage to it unless struck by truck or another big van. Also, my jeep is a grand Cherokee which definitely has a less roll over % than the likes of a wrangler.

My original post might have been a little to deceiving in how much I do wear the darn seatbelt. The majority of the time in my Cherokee I do wear it.. The beeping never stops so the manufacturers did do a good job with that because it does in fact force me to wear it. Like I said above though, the delivery van is a different story.

They're going about it all the wrong way. Seat belts should be replaced with iron man suits.

You should still wear a seatbelt. No matter how safe and effective a driver you are the other guy might be a drunken loon or just a 23 year old in a hot argument with their significant other who took their eyes off the road to get in a good zinger.
