So after last night's game, I am thinking maybe our secondary will actually be better than we thought. If Dee Milliner doesn't miss many games, he looked good in the first preseason game. Pryor looked pretty good yesterday. And either Antonio Allen or Rontez Miles can be a good second safety for us. So we might have 3 positions out of the four filled with good players, provided all those guys can stay healthy, big question with Milliner, given his history, and somewhat of a question with Pryor, with his concussion. The only question is the 2nd starting cornerback.

If I am Rex, next week against the Giants, I start Antonio Allen and Brandon Dixon at cornerback, and play them for a while. Even though Allen got beat on that deep pass last night, with the push off, he didnt look like a fish out of water, considering that was his first time playing the position, against the second best WR in the league. So I want him to get more reps, just to see if he can handle it. He's got the ball skills, and the size, so if he can stay with the quicker WRs, we could realistically keep him at cornerback, and see where it goes as he gets experience.

Brandon Dixon played well last night, although against Bengals 2nd or 3rd team. Still, this kid had very good combine numbers, he's fast and athletic, just came from a small school, so no experience going against talent. But his upside, it seems to me, is higher than guys like Walls and Wilson and Dowling, so let him get some reps against first team offense, see what happens.

If either of these two guys works out and the others stay healthy, we could actually have a decent secondary, all things considered. Lots of ifs, but some hope.

Walls needs a shot against the 1's. I wish they would've just put him out there last night against green so he would either earn the job or be exposed. Now if he does well against the Giants 1's we have to wonder if he can do it against more talented WR

Gonna be fun to watch Victor Cruz take on Kyle Wilson on Friday. No one else on the Giants roster is really an imposing receiver though I suppose Randle will be a decent matchup for Allen.

This shouldn't be an issue and I'm still very annoyed by it.Allen shouldn't have to change positions on the fly,Idzik needs to try and fix this mess he created

Allen was a 7th Round pick and if the Jets think he can make an impact at Cb, then he'll do what they say.

Allen might not excel at one thing, but one thing he really has going for him is his athleticism. The kid can do pretty much everything on Defense. And for all we know, he might flourish at Cb. I think it's worth a shot with Pryor in the game, too.

I'd like to see Walls with the 1s. It's time to see what he's got.

I remember Walls filling in last season when Milliner got benched and he wasn't all that impressive.

The thing is, Walls got some playing time last season, and he didn't do that well. To me, he is the safe option, where if the other guys with more upside fail, he can step in, and do his mediocre thing. But the preseason snaps against first team offenses should go to the guys with more upside, to see what they got.

Compared to Cro and Milliner 3/4th of the season, Walls was a pro-bowler when he played last year. Who are these more upside guys BTW?

As the original post stated, the guys with more upside, in my opinion, are Allen and Dixon. Allen has shows some playmaking ability as a safety covering tight ends, and Dixon had very impressive combine numbers. Now that doesn't mean they will be better cornerbacks than Walls, but we already know what we got with Walls, a back-up type NFL corner, whereas those two guys are an unknown right now. That's why I want to give them snaps during the preseason. If they struggle, we can always play Walls later on.

As far as Walls looking good last season, I gotta disagree. He deceptively looked better than Milliner and Cro because he has the ability to stay with his guy, unlike those two last season. But despite that, despite being right there in perfect position, he pretty much always failed to break up the pass, so the end result was him being just as bad as them, just in a different way.

A lot rides on Milliner. If he can be the number one guy then they will just have to give safety help to whoever the other CB is. It isn't perfect and other teams will be able to predict it but what else can they do?

Most teams give their second corners help if not both. There are probably 5-7 corners you can really leave by themselves most of the time in the entire league.

This. Walls last year reminded me of Wilson getting burned in the Bengals preseason game....he was right there, but he just doesn't have the extra milligram of talent to take over when the balls coming in. At most he'll raise his hands in the air and hope the ball bounces off the back of one of them. Walls never turns his head either. Not that I've ever seen.

Absolutely, the issue is whether or not Milliner can be a guy you leave alone as we are used to allowing us to give the #2 guy safety help or freeing up safeties to be involved in blitzes and whatnot. If both our #1 and #2 CB need safety help then, well, that's going to make things tough for Rex and what his defence is capable of doing.

I just hope we wake up and bring Revis back next season after his one year deal with Pats is over.Hopefully he has a mediocre year this year and his price tag won't be as high

What fucking game where you watching? We are going to get eaten alive this year with our secondary... Patterson will play 6 games tops, and you better hope Milliner turns into a Top 5 corner real quick.. If that defensive line doesn't start getting pressure on the QB, you could forget it.. Our Passing D will be ranked 25 or worse. Brandon Dixon?? HA!

I understand it was vanilla but Dalton put up a passing clinic on us.. All I saw were Corners running after WR's. If you want to hide behind the fact that this is preseason, that is fine.. This looks like a sign of things to come, and if so, we will be lucky to win 4 games.

    Long-term, our secondary looks good.

    CB1: Milliner
    CB2: ?
    Nickel: McDougle
    FS: Pryor
    SS: Allen

I would've had no problem penciling in Dex there if he had a good year this year, but coming off an ACL injury, now two years removed from playing, I think it's safer to project him as a top-end nickel back. All we really need is a quality CB. This year may be rough, and I think we'll see a lot of Cover 2 this year to avoid our CB2 of the year (Patterson/Walls/Whomever) getting singled out and abused.

Our front 7 looks good long-term also.

DL: Set for the forseeable future
    OLB: Coples
    OLB: ?
    ILB: Davis
    ILB: ?

Our defense is pretty much set going forward. I don't see us spending a high pick on a CB again, but I do see us looking at the FA market. Maybe hell freezes over and we sign Revis? Maybe someone like Walls impresses and becomes a #2 CB? Who knows. But next year we'll have even more cap space, a 3rd year QB, and further developed offensive talent. Next year is our year to make splashes.

Dude, this is going to be a good football team. Secondary concerns are way overblown. There's no way you can say that was our starting defensive secondary out there against the bengals. It was practice for the d and a lot more on the line for the o.

This team is better than last season, injuries happen to every team. Do you think the steelers or ravens won't push the bengals shit in this year? Receivers are a brittle bunch, rather have power where it matters most, close to the football.

Suspecting we are going to win a lot of games.

So much bad shit you read and here about the jets. It's almost like ppl are really digging just to find something, anything. When, there are so many more positives out there on the field, like a young qb playing with character; like a football nfl caliber qb; and a running game that rivals any team in the league. Good things all around.

Point is preseason proves year in and year out that it gives fans absolutely zero indication of how good their football team is going to be. It's a silly practice to get players warmed up and to determine final cuts for border line players that all will most likely not play in a game other than special teams, ever.

We have good coaching, we have some professional vets, we have good young talent. Most of those ingredients lead to successful teams. I expect a successful team.
