Well one has a SB ring and the other doesn't.. but it is the little things like this that make that difference: Both of their teams have struggled with dumb penalties in the preseason. Payton's reaction is to be pissed off and vow that things need to change and that they will work on that in practice, calling out his players but also doing it like a head coach should, by accepting some blame... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...penalties-obviously-that-was-painful-to-watch "Obviously, that was painful to watch," Payton said. "I can't recall ever a game with that many penalties. And here is the thing: most of the ones I saw were good calls. So this isn't about a crew calling a lot of penalties, this is about something I have to do a better job with. ... "It's the first sign of a team that has no discipline. And that's the first sign of poor coaching. ... I'm very upset." Rex Ryan's reaction? Well let's just say it was a little bit different than the Super Bowl winning coach's: "The main thing is our guys are protecting each other.." "We want to be as physical a football team as we can possibly be within the confines of the rules. But we're not here to take anything from anybody." It's the things like this that piss me off with Rex Ryan. 15 yard personal fouls are a big deal. They make or break drives and change football games. You win football games by taking each drive seriously, not by "protecting each other." Most of those penalties we saw saturday night were stupid, after the play bullshit that has nothing to do with playing a physical football game. And when the HC acts like that's not a problem, or worse, acknowledges it as acceptable, then you know it's going to carry over. I understand its preseason, but its things like this that is important to work on in preseason. I can live with Antonio Allen getting burned as a trial at the CB position in preseason, but people taking cheap shots after plays? That shouldn't be happening ever.
I'm not even sticking up for Rex, they do need more discipline, but comparing those the "heat of battle" type penalties to having your star player blatantly showboating TWICE (knowing they'll get penalized) is apples to oranges (yes there were others but the Jimmy Graham "dunks" were clearly the most obvious)
They are stupid penalties either way to me. Showboating or cheap shots after the whistle. Both are obvious dumb penalties and result in 15 yards either way. You could argue that Graham's dunks were less of a problem even because they got assessed on the kickoff, not in the middle of the field, on 3rd downs, etc...
Hi BN I totally understand what you are saying. But at the same time, we know Rex isn't someone who blames his players in front of media. I am pretty sure he grilled Colon, Giacomini and Winters behind closed doors. I
Some of the penalties were bs. Nelson downed the player to prevent him from getting up and scoring. Which last time I checked was legal. Their player runs over and clocks Nelson which should've been a penalty. But our guys got punished for sticking up for their teammate. Hill gets tangled up with a Bengal player and they call a bs penalty. Yes some of the penalties were correct calls especially on Winters. But those two penalties were bad.
The jets take no shit and that's good, its a game of dominance ofc can't be routine but its good to make A statement in pre season. Its not excusable to be often but once in a while it sets the tone for the whole game.
Oh god lol Let's start comparing reactions to penalties. Jesus. I thought when the preseason started, the retarded threads stopped. I guess not.
The obvious difference between Payton and Rex is that Payton has Drew Brees. You can't make comparisons between two coaches when one has a borderline first ballot HoFer and the other has had two young QB's who were borderline NFL starters.
Isn't this the same coach who was banned for an entire year for the bounty gate deal? Rex was never banned lol
Well that's the difference between a finesse team and a smash mouth team. And the other difference is Ryan's "You hit one of ours, we hit two of yours" approach smashed Payton's high powered ballerinas into submission last year. Wasn't it Drew Brees who said the Jets were the hardest hitting, toughest D they had faced all year? So there's that. But in fairness it depends on the penalties your team is committing. False Starts, Off Sides, Delay of Game, those suck. But personal foul for smashing the shit out of the opposing player who went for a cheap shot? Maybe Payton should have his guy's backs a bit on those. Toughen them up.
Same tired ole QB excuse for Rex...sigh. He himself is a major reason why the QBs have been so poor here.. Payton deserves credit for getting the most out of Drew Brees. He was very much a borderline NFL starter himself coming off of shoulder surgery before Payton starting working with him. The two are a great combo. Rex Ryan will never have a Drew Brees because he can't coach up the QB position like a Sean Payton can.
Most likely, very true. Rex is a defensive HC. Others, like Sean Payton, are offensive HCs. So while Sean my be able to coach up a QB, his defense will suck and he'll need 40 pts/game to even have a chance. So many times games like these come down to how the coordinators do on the other side of the ball. While Rex's D and Payton's O may play to a draw, how did MM do against Rob Ryan?
Rex Ryan could be trying to correct these things behind the scenes, but we all know they have committed a lot of penalties most of the years he's been the HC here. I know Rex Ryan wants to cover for his players and that's fine, but you have to call these guys out during practice or something. I take Rex's desire to be the liked in the locker room as him losing sight of winning because penalties are drive killers.
Rex does stress penalties in practice....he pay's for refs to patrol his practices and makes the entire team do pushups/laps when someone fucks up. Probably not enough though since no pushups/laps required during a real game.
And we have also seen the Refs watch those border line teams very closely and call every questionable hit. We don't need the badboys of the NFL reputation...especially with Pryer back there laying down wood.
Drew Brees last two years with SD they won 21 games with him throwing 51 TD's and 22 Int's. Brees had a 65% completion percentage and averaged 7.5 yards a throw. His QBRat for the two years was in the mid-90's. The only reason SD let him go was because he was hurt and they had spent a 1st round pick on Philip Rivers two years before and then watched Brees develop into the QB they always wanted out of him. If he hadn't had the shoulder they keep him and trade Rivers for a boatload of draft picks.
