At an Idzik presser today, Idzik was asked if the Jets do infact have 21 Million in cap room as reported. Idzik replied that reports of the Jets having 21 Million in cap "aren't entirely true." This came after questions about not signing Revis and big named CB Free agents with large price tags. Idzik said that he had "no regrets" in free agency and thinks that smart and reasonable spending will contribute to sustained success. When asked if the actual cap figure was "in the ballpark," Idzik replied "I don't know, how big's the ballpark?" The most confusing aspect is that the NFLPA site regularly updates reports of team's cap numbers. You can find them here: https://nflplayers.com/reports/RunPublicReport.aspx?report=top51RT The Jets, according to the NFLPA, have 21 Million left before hitting the cap ceiling, as initially thought? Do they have it wrong? And if it is, by how much? Perhaps Idzik meant that they were planning to do other things with some of the cap money, such as signing Muhammed Wilkerson to a huge deal. The figure wouldn't obviously show up, but they would have to spend around that "reserved' money.
I think that's exactly what he means. We have Mo Wilk and Kerley to pay. That's gonna eat up a huge chunk of cap space right there with Mo Wilk, plus we'll have to pay to keep the 'sons of anarchy' together. Harrison will be looking to get paid soon as he's on an undrafted rookie contract pay scale. It'll be interesting to see what Idzik does if both Harrison and Kendrick Ellis have another big year rotating at the nose tackle position. We could look to trade one and sign the other, or look to pay both and have one hell of a rotation at nose tackle so that one big man is always fresh. So we might have this 21 million in cap space on paper, but Idzik might already have a plan in place that's going to use up most of that money. I think the 'sustainable success' comment Idzik made means resigning our home grown guys.
I think Harris and D BRICK will be let go in a year or 2. I'm not in front of my computer to see when that can happen, but I remember Tanny grossly overpaid those guys.
Need to have something done for Brick after 2015, his cap # jumps to over $14M for '16 and '17. If he bounces back this year, last year he wasn't terrible just not his usual self, his cap hit is not bad for next year. Hopefully Ijalana can stay healthy and between him and Aboushi maybe we have a replacement on the roster already. Pretty sure this is the last year of Harris contract. He is only making $4.9M this year but has another $5M in incentives he can hit though I am not sure if they are easily attainable.
I think this is Harris's last season with us unless he goes nuts this year, then maybe we'll be talking about him retiring a jet.. but he's one dimensional and we seem to be getting younger and faster (Hitman Harris is doing the opposite). I dont think big Ferg is going anywhere anytime soon, because i dont think Mangold is going anywhere.. they are best friends. Brick will def. have to restructure though bc is cap hit is ridiculous in a few years. You could be right though.
He definitely way overpaid on Harris. It's hard to say he overpaid D'Brik though IMO cause of the importance of the Left Tackle position to a team.
LOL. Kerley's not gonna cost very much. You talk about him as if he's a guy deserving a max deal. He's a good player, an above-average slot receiver other teams won't be engaging in a bidding war over. El Cheapo Idzik would probably just let him walk or at best, offer him the veteran minimum.
If those are the facts and we need to resign the best players my criticism of JI is unfounded. We simply have no money to get any FA at any position for the rest of the year barring a potential future draft trade. So be it.
Yeah we can move this year's money into next year. We need to resign home grown guys AND probably pick up some free agents to fill needs too. Ain't gonne be cheap.
If Idzik makes it happen and we make the playoffs then he should continue as GM for a few years. Just replace Bradway and the Scouting department who have been here IMO too long. The offseason pick ups will prove more beneficial in long run.
I agree about Wilkerson. I've been thinking it would be more prudent to give him his extension sooner rather than later because next year he'll probably command more money. Idzik may have a plan in place to negotiate a deal with him after the preseason is done. It would make sense to wait until the season starts, just to ensure that we don't sustain more injuries and have a need to spend more money first. I don't know how accurate that cap # is, but I'm in the boat of paying Wilkerson sooner rather than later. Kerley won't break the bank, but vet min would be a slap in the fact for him. He's worth much more than that, unless Hill and Nelson both surpass him this year.
I'm curious. When a GM makes a major organizational change - for example, revamping the Scouting Department - at what time of year is that change made? If you wait until the Offseason, then that doesn't really allow the new Scouting Dept guys much time for the upcoming Draft, at least not enough time to fully get on the same page as the team, I would think? So, if Bradway and others were to be replaced, then when would it be?
Idzik as of post draft has pretty much replaced all but one regional scout and the head of scouting. I'm definitely not a Bradway fan, but he has been in charge for some of the best talent this team has seen in decades. The mid and lower rounds are a question mark and the second round is really scary, but he has been far from a disaster.
Quick answer is yesterday lol. No, you make a good point but IMO it should be right after Preseason is over to do research on replacements that is based initially on how other teams have faired with their draftees. Another criteria could be what gems/sleepers are making it contrary to everyone's expectations except the scouts. On the other hand, you want to avoid teams who have their top 3 draftees bust every other year. Then again, just check out how the Teams with consistent winning records draft because you'll notice that even at the lower end of picks they work miracles. Thanks being on same page with me on this.
Wow! Who knew Idzik did this already!!!!! If he cut all except Bradway that is sending a bit of a message he is not to happy with the dope on potential players he was getting. Too bad all that great talent we got took us to one playoff spot and since then to nowhere.........
Successful drafting teams don't tend to just let their scouts walk away for a lateral job opportunity. Plus you completely ignored the aspect of regional scouting. And you don't seem to know shit about what the Jets did this offseason in terms of scouting changes. Shocked.
Kerley will never get a big contract I'm not sure what you mean.Kerley will get Num 3 wide reciver money whatever that is he isn't getting a big deal. What has Kerley done to get a big contract? He's a solid option but he isn't anything special
With the new GMs emphasis on building the team through the draft, the scouting dept becomes all the more important. What do we have, 6,7,8 scouts? 10 maybe? I'd triple it and spend some of woody's jack sending these guys around the country to actually watch a lot of kids play. Most of our scouts watch from the couch this game or that game, taking 'notes'. Div 1 gets 95% of the attention, but draft pics in the later rounds and really good UDFAs can come from Div 3 schools, and there's A LOT of Div 3 schools. It takes moving heaven and earth for a Div 3 coach to get one of his kids even noticed. I'd hire 200 scouts and have them actually go to all the games and spend time with the teams and coaching staffs.
What "lateral job opportunity" was being offered to any of the Jet scouting staff?? I am real jealous that you know more about the Jets "regional scouting" than I do....sorry but I also have a real job and other responsibilities to take note of that LMAO. I know plenty about the Jets and have been following them before you and your hat were conceived. If you are FO statistician that's good for you. Personally, I am more of a bottom line guy eg how many wins do we get from our personnel and where is that SB ring?????
Theoretically, that's great if want to wait years and having more scouts does not necessarily mean more great players. What do we do NOW with no CB ?? What other CBs were drafted? This is why paying for some good FAs trumps the draft.
