Why Vick? If the stats are about the same for both, shouldn't you want theone that has long term potential?
Because Vick has 10 years of NFL experience....3 in MM's WCO. Vick gives the Jets the best chance to win against our first 8 opponents. Vick gives Rex & MM the best chance to keep their jobs. I'm not willing to risk turning the entire franchise upside down for another 3-4 years just so our rookie +1 QB can 'develop' when we have our 2014 answer on the bench.
And then what happens in 2015? 2016? It's that kind of short sighted instant gratifification ignorance that keeps teams from becoming winning franchises. No team can win while on a perennial search for a franchise QB. It is Vick starting over Smith that turns the franchise upside down. Idzik is taking the long view, not the one year at a time view you want to take. Smith is the QB unless he flops or is injured and that is just the way it should be for any thinking fan. Get used to the concept. .

Geno has the potential to be better than the current version of Michael Vick. That says it all. 4-5 games of sacrifice testing to see if Geno could be the best Jets QB since Ken O'brien is worth starting him. If the test fails...then just start Vick to salvage the season and start another QB search next year.
Basically I'm saying that Geno's potential exceeds the current play of Vick. I'm not quite saying Geno (in many years) could be better than Vick in his prime....but rather the Vick now.
Geno will be the starter. Against what I believe what will work but I'm not a coach. Vick can lead the way to Geno's learning. Geno needs a faster delivery. He almost telegraphs his passes. But I think it's his job to lose for whatever reason deemed by those in charge. Very frustrating. But let's see how this thing unfolds over the course of the next few preseason games. There is just no spark where you can say there is an it factor. Just sporadic play. I believe we are still in search of a starting QB for the future. Vick is a stop gap if allowed. Geno is flat out terrible. He doesnt have the tools mentally or physically to be an NFL QB and that was painfully obvious to every GM except ours apparently. Me, I'd rather go with Vick because either way we're drafting a QB next spring. Anyone that thinks Geno is a long term answer is fuckin delusional
I am a little confused about why everyone keeps saying Vick is a stop gap. I know health is always a concern with him, but if he can remain healthy I think he has a solid 4 years ahead of him. My personal preference for this year if the preseason continues to go this way is to give Vick the nod and ride him out till he's clearly done. Geno will be fine sitting and learning. I don't know why everyone keeps saying he will not develop on the bench. I do see a lot of potential in Geno and I will understand if management gives him the first few games but they won't let this season go down in flames with Vick sitting on the bench watching.
Prior to prison Vick was glorified running back with a rocket left arm. I'd argue that he is a much better QB post prison. I don't think Geno in year 2 has the "potential" to be better than the current seasoned version of Vick. Maybe your statement will be true 2 or 3 years from now when Vick is on the other side of 35 but I can't see that happening now. The thing is neither Rex, Geno or even Idzik has 2 to 3 years time to wait on that potential to realize.
My thinking is Vick was brought here to teach Geno how to implement the run game into his game. Yes, Vick is a viable back up, maybe one of the best back up situations in the league, but I honestly don't see where the FO or CS brought Vick in to be a starter. I think they are hoping Geno picks up on some of Vicks traits and learns how to take off when the pocket collapses. Baring an injury to Geno I don't see any way Vick starts. Let's be honest, good or bad, the Jets need to see what they have in Geno and sitting him on the bench for a year behind a guy that is a stop gap and major injury risk due to the way he plays the game, isn't going to help this team in the long run.
