This can be the best Jets team that has taken the field in decades... and it can also be the worst.

I agree with this, it's on paper a pretty brutal schedule, being .500 at the break may not please some people, but the hardest part of the year will be behind them at that point.

Do you think he'll improve his fundamentals a lot this year? I feel like he'll be clutch, he had like 5 4th quarter comeback wins and some game winning drives, and ended the season 3-1 after some ugly losses. But it's too soon to know for sure if he'll be clutch.

I read that in Philly, MM called for the QB to be in the shotgun about half the time, and it seems like the last few games of this season Geno was mostly in the shotgun and did play better. So I'm not sure if the plan will be to permanently adjust the offense to Geno like they did at the end of last year- or if they hope they can adjust Geno to the offense.

There are some QBs who are great who almost always take snaps in the gun (Rodgers, and in some years Brady mostly operates out of the gun, but in 2013 he was under center almost all the time; Nick Foles had a great year playing out of the gun on over 90% of the snaps), so do you think Geno will be above average playing almost only out of the shotgun?

Or do you see him learning to play under center as well and being good with that mix of center and shotgun? Or playing mostly under center (though that's not what MM's offenses have tended to look like)?

Take Leonhard over Kerley returning punts in a heartbeat.

Speaking of Cromartie, he is hurt again for Arizona now.

Just want everyone to keep perspective and realize this team can get better and still end up with a record of 8-8 or even less. Last year's team was not as good as most 8-8 teams, and our schedule looks brutal this year. But best team since 2010 I believe, plus cap space as far as the eye can see (especially after the Harris contract goes away).

You mean it's actually possible to have a more embarrassing season than 2012?!

I favor the sentiment that says most teams are 8-win teams with a +-2 margin (is "margin" the proper word there? I forget).

It's an easy answer and might sound lazy, but I do think that's the reality of the NFL.

You have a few bad teams, even less elite teams, and then the rest of the league in the middle.

So, if we start there, I figure we're a 10-win team this year, with a Playoff (maybe even Championship) caliber Defense.

I think the only way we finish with 6 wins is via injury and/or a disaster on the OL.

    Sewer.

    Hill can't catch a cold.

    Rex Ryan is a moron.

    Amaro is a bust.

Pryor got a concussion so he's going to get 50 more.

    Evans is a bust.

Geno is the worst QB in the NFL.

    Milliner is a choker.

McDougle should have been picked in round 7.

Idzik is dumb as hell not signing a CB.

Did I pretty much nail it?

Too early to tell IMO. We still have no idea what the 2014 NYJ's will play like once the real hitting starts. Need to see how well they operate during the preseason too. MM's system is only in year 2 so there still might be growing pains. The Front 7 on D is solid but beyond that, not enough answers for the question marks that man those positions. Team is still a work in progress so its 50/50 how things will turn out. We'll see as time goes by.

I don't know the team as well as a lot of you, but from what I saw last year and with the new weapons this year, I will say that if the Oline can step it up and the WRs behind Decker and Kerley can step it up, then this should be a much improved team from last year.

I think the QB spot with Geno and Vick will be fine if they aren't on their backs or running for their lives all the time. They might not be great, but they are good enough to win games with.

Other WRs than Decker will have to make plays or teams will just stack the box and double team Decker.

The schedule early on does look kind of brutal, but if the above happens, I would say no less than 9 wins. But this question would probably be best answered after the preseason.

I think the receivers will be alright.

Decker will draw lots of double coverage, but Nelson is solid and Kerley is one of the league's better slot receivers. CJ caught about 43 balls last year, so he can help Geno out when nobody's open. And then we're hearing that Zach Sudfeld (no relation to Jerry Seinfeld) is looking pretty good in training camp- so either him or Amaro will probably be a significant contributor on offense as well. I think we'll be alright- there's no chance that we'll have a top-10 passing attack, but we look like we'll have a competent passing game that won't drag the team down. More worried about Geno's propensity for multi-interception games than I am about the receivers not being good enough.

That season was Hell on earth. If this team goes in the sewer that's at least a 8-8 record right with no buttfumble?

    Don't forget Cumberland.

Listening to Rex gush over Sudfeld today, I'm almost convinced that the Jets will carry 4 TEs. He also gushed over Pantale. Might be that the Jets only carry 5 WRs and go heavy at RB. Going to be an interesting cut down.

No way in hell the Jets carry 4 TEs, do teams even carry that many?

    6 WRs
    3 TEs
    4 RBs

That's my opinion. Only reason I have more receivers is because of Special teams.

Not even in hell? Tight end is an inexpensive premium position that produces heavy dividends. I agree that it's unlikely the Jets carry 4 of them, but it's not an impossible scenario.

What are the rest of your slot predictions?

To me, our QB situation is no worse this year then its been since 2009. I'm not a huge Geno fan but I feel his year last year was no worse then what I saw from Mark throughout the majority of his time here minus the playoff performances.

I don't think I quite agree that this team could be one of the worst in decades. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't shock me one bit if they won 6 games but to be one of the worst they'd have to win 4 or less games and I don't see that as likely after winning 8 last year with less talent on both sides of the ball in my opinion. I think i'd be more worried about our weakness in the secondary if we didn't have such a defensive oriented head coach. I'm much more concerned with the offense then I am the D at this point.

I like all the young guys we have at WR but obviously someone besides Decker and Kerley is going to need to step up and give us some real quality production. To me that has to be either Hill, Saunders, or Evans. I just dont think Nelson is much of a player. Could be a decent #4 or 5 receiver who could help in the RZ due to his size, but thats about it.

The biggest concern I have is the O-Line, Geno was less then impressive for most of last year, and if the O-Line downgrades from what it did last year Geno could struggle mightily, and we could see Vick on the field early in the season. Guys like Brian Winters have to step up in their second seasons. Winters was garbage last year and that can't continue. The Jets have to get solid production out of the LG spot. If they can get decent production from that area and all other players on the line play to their normal standards our O-Line can be really good, which in turn will give Geno every advantage in the world to be really good, especially with some new weapons in both the passing and running game. D'Brik has to go back to being the player he was before last year as well too, and Colon needs to show he's healthy.

This goes back to a previous post. Chicken and egg. There is a lot about the QB position that decides the Oline.

Yeah, the guards can shit the bed, but unless your QB knows how to read a defense and make adjustments, how can you really blame a second year guard?
