If Rex does not end "the competition " and tell the fans and media Smith is starting it will be the beginning of a rift among players, some of whom support Vick or others who back Geno. I have been a big supporter of Vick based on his ability and character, a very good acquisition by Idzik. He is also gradually getting into shape and should be ready by start of this season of hope for the Jets. However, if Rex continues to let mouths and decisions to just roll it will be another example of IMO poor leadership. Now is the time to have the players fall in line behind the starting QB: Smith clearly shows he is ready to win and is working hard to prove any critics (myself included) wrong. It's no enlightenment on my part but just common sense that Vick is and has been what he is all along ..the backup. Things could always change into the season but for the sake of team unity lets remove the smokescreen and get on to winning or face another needless controversy.
The players have already made it known many times that Geno is the starter. Hell, Vick has confirmed this a number of times. The competition mantra has been the rest of the positions, and when the morons that pretend to write stories ask Rex about QB, he trolls their asses off. What do you really need to tell you who the starting QB is? A biplane saying "Hey dumbfuck, Geno has been the starter for a month." ? Geno was the starter from day one. It's been obvious.
Vick still has it and has had some good days at camp. He is there to push Smith, agreed, but what I am saying is the controversy and so called competition can only serve to unfocus and distract the players. Personally, don't see how Smith is sweating anything as the telephone call from Idzik told him months ago he is Jets future.
It doesn't matter what the Jets do. If they name Geno starter the media will just move on to "How short is Geno's leash?" & "Geno is starter..but for how long?". It really doesn't benefit the Jets at all to name anyone a starter at this stage. Let these guys earn their jobs & we'll all find out who starts where come game day.
It may be obvious to you but many players probably support and want Vick to be the starter! What they say for consumption is not what or how they really feel. Vick received 4 million to say "Geno comes first" ......I think the rest of the intelligent world knew this months ago. If you polled most NFL teams I am certain most players would agree that QB controversies are hardly team builders. Jet players are not mindless with no opinions and Vick is seen as a Seasoned vet and a leader.
Actually, no he doesn't. He can do whatever he wants. That's why he's coach. It's really no big deal if he doesn't name the starter right now or any time soon.
Yes, but you assume someone is earning something. It's really a farce...we know GS is the chosen one. He will have a decent preseason and....are you ready for this...even if he stinks it up in most games he will start. So why wait....
Someone needs to flush this thread down the toliet. There is no QB comp Geno is the week one starter.Vick is there as an insurance policy just as in life we all have diffrent types of insurance incase things go bad.Vick is John Idziks insurance policy if Geno craps his pants by week 5.Get over it
What about the reverse scenario - what happens if Geno (hoping that this doesn't happen ftr) has a terrible preseason and you've already named him the starter. Just makes Rex look like an idiot.
The idiot takes his cues from Idzik and Woody. Are you convinced Vick is the starter if Geno smells it up in PreS?????Would you bet the house on that? This is a political gesture and team unity move to give Smith command and have the team respect that, even if he only looks good a couple of games. IMO he starts no matter because he is "jets future".
Not that easy, the PLAYERS are seeing Vick connect on passes, lead team etc. Plus he has a lot of experience at winning. Why live in a world of assumption.......Rex should step up and announce formally GS is his starter. Does MV really believe he has starter or insurance policy written on his forehead...?? Remember, Vick started before Foles in Philly
You pretty much summed up what you can hear from NFLN and ESPN, but it doesn't change reality. Geno is the defacto starter. Rail against that all you want, but it's reality, no matter what the players say. I'm not in agreement with that decision, but I'm not going to deny reality or continue to come up with adverse scenarios. Geno is the starter, for better or for worse.
Did you miss the 77.8% of first team snaps that Smith is getting over Vick? If it is obvious to most fans and sports writers then I am pretty damn sure the players know what is going on including Smith and Vick. Even you stated that it is known that Smith is the starter. The players don't need Rex to announce something they know.
He's not going to name him now because he can't name him now. In all likelihood, Geno is the starting QB barring something catastrophic in the preseason. I think he's ready to make the next step and it's best for the future of the franchise if he starts this year. However, if he goes out and has multiple turnovers in each preseason game (unlikely but possible) you can't justify starting him. If Vick outplays him by THAT much, and Geno completely disintegrates, he won't be the starting quarterback, thus, Rex can't proclaim a starter yet.
The Jets are doing things differently than the other teams. We don't have team captains, and at least for now we don't name starting QBs. It's clear as day that Smith will start in Week 1 (barring injury or an epic collapse), but he won't have a solid grip on the starting role, so it's not unreasonable to leave it up in the air.
