If I missed the part where Revis himself or at least a source said he would be at all interested in a one year deal, my apologies, but what makes you think that was even an option?

FFS, there was no salary cap then. Do you not understand how the current salary cap system works? The salary cap went into effect in 1994 - the Cowboys and 49ers had pro-bowlers at every position (and the most depth in the league). They each won one more Super Bowl (1995 and 1996 respectively) and then the Deion Sanders-style signings (including Sanders himself) nuked both those teams for decades. 1995 and 1996 were still essentially pre-salary cap era teams because players were still under contract from the pre-cap years (low salary draft picks providing depth). Once the cap was fully instituted, their teams both went to feces.

They also both had HOF QBs, but I digress.

    I won't be.

Actually, what it probably means is that Sherman will be cut and the year it happens his entire signing bonus will get dumped on the Seahawks' cap and they will be paying the price for their stupid extension.

THis is just so incredibly naive. Why do people want to believe this kind of stuff? Are you not aware that Woody required Idzik to keep Ryan as HC last off season?

Woody is not a hands off owner. Face it.

The funny thing about this year is that if everything breaks their way, the Jets could in fact be a contender. But the odds are against it. Still, I do think the FO could have narrowed those odds with a couple of other moves they didn't make.

I spoke yesterday about Patterson looking better than expected, so in this post I'll mention wideout again. Beyond Decker and Kerley, and Nelson being a solid bench player, the rest of the roster at wideout sounds more like a bunch of guys hoping to make an NFL team rather than guys positioned to be starter quality. Sure one of them may surprise and step up. Can we count on that? No.

but they didn't win a SB while he was playing w/ that contract. Seattle has been giving out a lot of money and will have to do so w/ a bunch of their other young players. It will get a lot more difficult for them as they have to pay these guys.

I think it's much more naive to think that Woody controls everything behind the scenes. There isn't a shred of evidence to suggest Woody was the one that brought in Tebow. Woody REQUIRED Idzik to keep him? Can you verify this? I'm pretty sure Idzik knew going in that Rex was there. Are you saying that Idzik did not have the option to fire him if he wanted to? Any evidence of this?

You have no idea what you are talking about. Firstly, NO ONE is paying him $16 this year. Based on his current contract with the Pats (which will pay him $11.5-12M for THIS season), if NE cuts him/does not exercise it's 2015 option, their CAP hit is only $5 million for 2015. That's the fact.

It's 1.4 base plus another 2.2 in salary bonus. The fact that he's, in reality, receiving far more than that number in cash this year is irrelevant to the effect of his contract on the Seahawks' 2014 salary cap. It's in 2015 that the contract becomes astronomical and the Seahawks' cap is shot to hell. Just as I said, they have placed themselves on a one year clock.

In actual fact, he did not. I was referring to his current deal with the Pats which, while conveying the appearance of being a two year agreement in contractual terms, is essentially a one year deal in reality.

I think Revis hold out days are over. He knows he doesn't have many more years left so he going to try next off season to get a long term deal. Plus if he holds out you let him hold out and make him pay all the fines.

They will certainly be a force to reckon with this season.

In 2015, they'll finally have to buck up for Russell Wilson as well. Personally, i don't like how they backloaded a lot of Sherman's cap hit. But they can still part ways with him after next season (2015) is over, and only get hit with around 6M dead cap charge. So they have somewhat of an out. If he is still playing at an all-pro level tho, i expect they'll keep him for 2016. So all in all, i think it was worth it for them. They'll build around their best young players in Wilson, Thomas and Sherman for the immediate future. I don't see their situation as a 1 year clock at all.

    i never said they did.
Unhappy's been asserting that paying a CB 8M+ and being a Super Bowl contender are mutually exclusive.
There are over 10 teams paying that, and teams like the Hawks, Broncos, Packers, and Patriots all have pretty good odds to make some noise this year.

we paid Revis a ton in 2010 and nearly made the SB, we didn't lose b/c of revis' contract that year. it hurt us after that though.

Woody Johnson will ask GM candidates to keep Rex Ryan for a year, report says

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2013/01/woody_johnson_will_ask_gm_cand.html

    Next!

And oh yeah I NEVER said Woody controls everything in the sense of making all football decisions. He is the owner, though, and has made football decisions when he wants to.

Ok, let it be 12M, that in no way affects my argument. Whatever you pay Revis now you won't have available to roll into next year to pay other guys.

Your whole point is that a Jets have room to afford him THIS year, and it's true. Your problem is that you completely refusing to look beyond this year. In essence, you're willing to jeopardize signing of several key players in 2015 just so you can get a 1-yr rental of Revis now. This is Tanny mentality, and it's a failing one.

I stand corrected. Although Idzik knew this going in, so saying he was forced on him is a little over the top. I don't think Idzik would have taken the job if he didn't think Rex could coach.

Not that I wanted Rex to be fired, but that is pretty much the textbook definition of having something forced on you.

Perhaps you do not work in a corporate environment. If the owner who is also your boss tells you before you are offered the job that he wants to do X, you don't come in and not do X. He doesn't need to tell you that.

Sanders signed his deal in 95, which was a full season after the salary cap was implemented and at the time the cap was 37 million. He was making about 5 million a year which was 13% of the cap. In comparison, today the cap is $133m, so Revis making $12 is actually only 9% of the cap. Bump that to 16m and its 12%, so Deion was actually making more money than Revis per cap%. Were the Cowboys over the cap for the 95 season when they won it all? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can't find any references on this. Were teams allowed to be over the cap the first 2 years? Thanks.

That still isn't being forced on you, because you knew going in that it was your job and you accepted it. If I am working at a bakery and my job is to bake bread, I'm not going to consider that task being forced on me because I knowingly took that job knowing I would be doing exactly that. Now if later on, the manager tells me I need to start mopping floors and cleaning bathrooms instead, then it definitely is forced on you. Big difference. If you have a choice, it is NOT FORCED by definition.

    force
    verb
    1. 1.
make a way through or into by physical strength; break open by force.
"they broke into Fred's house and forced every cupboard door with ax or crowbar"
synonyms:break open, burst open, knock down, smash down, kick in More

    2. make (someone) do something against their will.
"she was forced into early retirement"
Note definition #2. AGAINST THEIR WILL. Obviously it wasn't against Idzik's will, or he wouldn't have taken the job.
