Cops shooting dogs has become the norm nowadays. Doesn't matter if the dog presents any kind of threat, cops are being taught that barking is a threat to their lives.
I think of this situation like I think of beating my women. Sometimes you just have to be safe. You never know what could happen if you let them run their trap. I applaud this cop for his heroism and bravery in this most deadly situation. The dude clearly almost died. The only thing that could make me happier than beating a woman would be shooting her in the face.
