Yes, being spit on is intense provocation even if it's your wife. But if you're in the NFL and you aren't the punter your entire body could just about be considered a lethal weapon in a court of law. When that's the case you're supposed to follow a different set of rules than an average guy walking down the street. I think what Waterboy is trying to get at is that spitting is not a good reason to hit someone in society. I challenge you to tell your Mom or a female boss about your strongly held beliefs regarding hitting women.
My mom told me to not put my hands on a woman unless provoked. I was told to exhaust all other options before it gets to that point as well. And yes spitting IS a valid reason to hit someone whether man or woman. You do not do that period. That is simply vile and dirty. And anyone who does that to me is getting fucked up.
