Or really anyone else I guess. Who would you want as HC? If we tank out at 4-12 or if Rex had been fired last year, who would you rather have now, who was available?
The thought of starting over with a low profile coach is kind of nauseating. The big names are mostly past it at this point and would likely not be successful in the pressure-filled job that the Jets present. Rex knows the gig and he gets his guys to play hard. Maybe the Jets will have to make a change but I really hope not. Walt Michaels was the Jets chance at an 80's Super Bowl.
Yeah, I wouldn't want a new guy (like a promoted coordinator), and I wouldn't want someone who sucked somewhere else. If I could get Jeff Fisher or Bill Cowher- fine. Other than that...meh, I'd rather have Rex. Last thing I want is some Joe Philbin/Lovie Smith kind of mid-tier retread. Rex is a loudmouth and probably not high-end intelligent when it comes to shit like game management- but he tries to win Football the Football way, by punching you in the mouth. I'll take that.
I agree that we shouldn't change head coaches. I think it's pretty clear that the roster was crippled after the Holmes and Revis injuries in 2011, and there was not much chance of the Jets being playoff contenders in 2012 or 2013. If we were going to fire Rex, I think the time to have done it would've been after 2012. (I think that would've been a mistake, but that would have been the time to have done it.) I feel like once you find someone good, you should stick with them- and Rex is very good. I really hope that the Jets can make it to the playoffs this year- I want Rex to be the coach for 2015 and 2016, when I believe the Jets will be very strong contenders. Right now we just have a fighting chance at the playoffs.
The season needs to start so stupid threads like this will stop. This topic has been discussed ad nauseam the past few years. Anyone who questions Rex Ryan is considered a "hater" and they are approached with this same stupid question... I understand the guy has gone 3 years without a winning season but there's got to be a better argument for keeping him than "who would be better?" And picking apart the unknown alternative.... But here's your answer. There are what 7billion people on this earth.. There's probably at least more than a few that could coach the New York Jets better than Rex It's not my job to find the guy, that's why the owner doesn't pay me a massive salary to find the guy... Rex Ryan is a bright defensive mind but he has a lot of flaws.. Managing the QB position might be tops on that list. If it was me, I'd look at replacing him with a guy who can understand, manage and develop the most important position on the field. ... Or keep Rex, but lets not act like he's anything more than an average NFL head coach. He's not untouchable, deserves much of the criticism he gets and Jets fans shouldn't be considered "haters" when they question his abilities. -- also, I would NEVER keep a coach just because you are afraid of the alternative. That's a loser mentality. You evaluate the guy by the job he is doing period.
For the record I like Rex but I'm also open to change and I like revisionist speculation. I'm just curious who people would want as an alternative. I'm not criticizing the criticizers.
Which is? When Rex came to us as a HC it was his first gig and he readily admits that he has flaws and is learning all the time, you act like he should be Bill Walsh. There's a world of difference between "question his abilities" and not getting behind the team. Our HC breathes life and optimism into our team which we haven't had in years. I absolutely hate this constant changing of HCs every time the 'Fans' decide his tenure is up. STICK with the guy, let him learn and see where it takes us. How many 'Big Names' could have done what Rex did last season? I would have liked to have seen what Belichick could have done.
Rex Ryan has done far more good in his tenure than bad. He was not brought to NY to develop the QB position, that is your desires and not realistic. He was brought here to change the culture of this team, to get this team away from the "same ole Jets" mentality. He was brought here to be a winner which he has done time and time again, even when the cards have been completely stacked against him and the list of hardships this guy has had to overcome is long. Yet, he's done it. A loser mentality is someone who gives up and always thinks the grass is greener on the other side. A winner is someone who has passion, drive, and a determination to find a way to meet expectations within their being. Rex is the definition of that and I'm glad Woody sees the big picture. In all honesty, we have not had a coach of this caliber in a very long time. A lot of people realize that, maybe you should try to be a little bit more open minded and stop thinking the grass is greener on the other side, that same old routine has been proven to be unsuccessful for this team. I'm glad a different approach is finally being implemented.
If they hate Rex, it is because the media pushes agendas instead of actual sports. Why the fuck is Mannish Mehta as well as other writers writing articles about the post season when we haven't played a pre-season game? Sports is no longer a healthy distraction. It's become bitch ball in front of our very eyes. Females coming into work with fuck me outfits on while the men have to come dressed in suits. Look at NFL Network to see what I mean. Sports is no longer about the journey. Only the prize.
Nah, it's like Nagle said here. Rex has flaws, specifically on managing the O and very specifically the Qb position. The low point was when he recruited Sparano, presumably because they both agreed on what O they wanted to run. It was like teaming Dumb with Dumber. And in fact I was mixed but leaning to for firing him after 2012. But... I did not blame the Tebow Fiasco on him. If I did I would have been strongly for getting rid of him, and as much as I hate Woody, I think Woody had to acknowledge that was on him, so he didn't blame Rex for that, either. Which imo is a factor why Rex survived that off season. But the main thing that has improved my opinion of Rex as Jet HC was the hiring of Marty. Marty seems the perfect match for Rex. To put it bluntly, as long as Marty has enough influence, we don't need to worry about Rex's limitations understanding the O. Having said that, the role Marty has is not entirely clear to me. I don't know for example how much say he has in personnel. But on balance Marty's presence has made Rex acceptable, imo. In other words, if the Jets do not succeed, I think that will be more about roster problems than the CS. Not that Rex is perfect. Things like what he said about NE kind of bother me, not that it keeps me up at night. But imo he's probably better than the NFL average as a suitable HC for the Jets. But to answer the question, my preference would be John Gruden.
Gunther, if you're referring to that adoreable little tomato that the NFL Network just hired for their "NFL AM" show, I know what you mean. Erin Coscarelli's a tasty little tart. Nice face Nice bod
Why are we discussing Rex's future now? So much else roster-wise to talk about. There's no way this teams tanks a 4-12 season this year. Let's leave it alone.
