I dunno. The fact that he fell to the second round in a draft class where there were not many alternatives and there were many teams in need of an upgrade at Qb tells us something about the way he was viewed around the league. You make a fair point about his being seen as requiring development, but how that squares against predictions he would not succeed is not clear to me.
That's because it was an awful draft class. Geno may heve been the best of the bunch, but that was like being the skinniest girl at the fat farm. Having said that, he has some tools and throws a beautiful ball, he needs to become smarter with the ball and his field awareness. _
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/art...me-Think/436e8bd1-6e4f-4b13-8105-50d68e942cd9 There are some things the Jets can build on with Geno Smith - a well thought out article. Hopefully he shows improvement next season.
It's actually been the most accurate analysis to date. I'm not saying my viewpoint was the popular one, quite the opposite, but so far it is being proven correct. For my rating of Geno to be proven wrong he needs to massively improve his game from the shit he put on the field last year. Your last paragraph is beside the point. There wasn't anybody in that class I liked. I'm not saying takin Geno in the second was bad for the value, I'm saying it was bad for how it affected our approach to this past draft class which was filled with good prospects across the board.
I think there's only been maybe 2 or 3 QBs that I have liked in the past 2 drafts. None from the 2012 class. 3 from the 2013 class. - Bridgewater - Carr - Fales Then, I think to myself which QB has the higher ceiling out of the past 2 drafts and I have to think that Geno Smith is in the top 3 in regards to upside. He's got more than anyone in his own class (2012). Bridgewater, Carr have more upside then Geno. Does Manziel really have more potential? I don't think so. Geno has a stronger arm and is a dual-threat also. Also is taller and can take hits more-so then Manziel. He also wants to pass-first. Did the Jets make the right choice? We have to see. But I look back and I see some mediocre prospects that have a lot of minuses to their game.
You are so wrong about Garoppolo. Really, I wish you were right because I hate the team that drafted him. He had monster numbers albeit in the FCS but he destroyed the better defenses he played. He has excellent throwing mechanics, throws a very accurate spiral, reads defenses well, toys with db's with his shoulder movement. You must have been watching someone else because he has great footwork and pocket presence. He's more pro ready right now than Geno is after a year under his belt.
Manziel is the wild card and no one knows how good or bad he'll be but if you think Geno (in addition to the other 3) has more upside than Bortles and Mettenberger then we just disagree. Couple of other guys too. _
The way you talk about him, it appears he can do no wrong. He does throw a nice ball, he does need to improve his footwork just as Geno. Matter fact you could argue Jimmy is worse in that department. He didn't take 1 snap under center in his collegiate career. Now, Geno isn't that good in that regards either, but he has experience and they can build on that. What good defenses has Jimmy played? He hasn't played any complex defenses. The learning curve makes him far more raw then Geno Smith.
Mettenberger has that nasty re-occurring back issue. That bothers me a little bit. Bortles is overrated as shit - he's just like Blaine Gabbert IMO. Manziel is the biggest wildcard absolutely. I think Geno has just as much if not more upside.
The QB's in this last class weren't good, they were over-hyped. They were better than the 2013 class but they weren't good as a group and I'm pretty sure the end results will prove that. Geno Smith has a better chance, as a second-year player, to have a good season this year than any of the guys taken in the 2014 draft. There were only two guys in that draft who I thought were better prospects than Geno and both of them fell dramatically on draft day and one of them is partying away his edge as we speak.
It's weird that in an awful draft class Geno wasn't taken in the first round but in a strong draft class those 2 guys were first rounders. And Mettenberger didn't have any recurring back issues last year--that was a condition that they found in 2012, treated it and continue to treat it and it doesn't appear to be a lingering issue. Unless of course you're looking for a reason not to think he's going to be a very solid pro. _
So what you are saying is players don't fall in the draft? Well HOT DAMN. That draft class had plenty of question-marks. Mettenberger can be a solid pro - but he's a statue in the pocket, and has an injury history. The only regret the Jets might have in regards to this draft was not drafting a WR earlier. Though, I am fine with Pryor in round 1.
I thought Geno Smith was a bad pick at the time because I had seen his work at WVU and was not impressed at all. Definitely did not feel he was better than Sanchez or worth the pick at the time. Now, after watching him for the 2013 season, I see potential. He had to handle a lot last season. I've said this before, but I really feel we will see if Geno has taken the next step or if he is never going to make it pretty quickly into the 2014 season.
Coming out, Geno was a first round pick. He received some bad advice to not go to the Senior Bowl and that hurt his stock. Had he gone, he would have been a first rounder.
I'm going by what I saw during the draft process, not the "internet draft gurus." I believed Geno was a first rounder coming out, but his play during the end of his senior year put a small dent, but not enough to push him out of the first. I love how when you disagree, you just say "that's wrong" without any explanation what-so-ever as if your word is the final word.
