Yeah, it's funny how if you've done both you still think he has a compact release. I guess compared to Tebow, sure. _
What makes you think he does not? If the guy had a compact throwing motion in college [read the reports prior to the draft, you can go back and watch the games as well to support that], then why would Marty (one of the smartest offensive minds in the NFL / good QB guru) take that away? Can you find valuable proof to support your argument? I remember when Geno was drafted, they never mentioned anything in regards to not having a compact throwing motion.
Tighten up his footwork, be quicker and be more decisive with the ball. I'd like to see his stats flip around. 21 TD's 12 INT's 59% completion 7ypa, 90 QBR. I'd like to see him pass the eye test. He could put up those numbers and still stink. When I watch him play I want to feel like I'm watching a good QB at work.
I'm sorry you're right, he's got a really compact tight release. Btw, saw him a lot in college, live and on the tube. But you're probably right, no ones jumping those routs on such a quick compact release evidence by so few INTs and pick 6's. That's not valuable proof. Again, stop reading pre-draft reports. _
So shitty footwork and the inability to read defenses don't lead to turnovers? All of the turnovers are because his release isn't 100% perfect? Because that's exactly what you are saying in that sentence. I saw him in college just as you did. Again, I use my eyes but I also use information provided to me by scouts. You know sometimes your eyes can deceive you just as they are for you right now. If we used our eyes and only our eyes, we would all be a bunch of juncs.
As far as I can tell, his release is pretty average. Nothing terrible, nothing great. If his release is what you are focused on, you are missing the problem completely.
If Geno works on his footwork and studies film - he'll be a much better QB then if he were to work on his freaking release. That's the least of his worries.
I really dont care too much about technique at this point.. just get it done. Sanchez looked like everything u wanted from a QB in the pocket, Feet were constantly shifting, reading the whole field (sometimes), throws a BEAUTY of a spiral i tell ya.. BEAUTIFUL.. right to the other team. -___-
I think you're just mad that the Jets drafted a QB from a team that your sorry CFB team managed to beat in a bowl game. Guess we should have drafted Nassib.
I'm sorry but who are you? I loved what Nassib did for my alma mater but he's not a good NFL QB and I in no way wanted to draft him. Not in any round. That whole QB class was incredibly weak, not the year to draft a QB. Interesting how my sorry CFB beat that powerhouse WVU pretty handily though. _
Wow. So many of my TGG fellow posters are QB experts. Footwork, release, throwing motion? Smith needs to improve to remain the starter. That means evening out the TD ( rushing and passing) to TO ratio (int and fumbles). He needs to improve his completion percentage. I think the improvement there will be dramatic , if only because he has some playmakers at TE and a RB who can catch. Smith had no weapons and no easy completions last year with no TE and no RB who could catch. .
Hard to argue with a victim of the media. It can shape your perspective before you even know it. Yup you're right, tight compact quick release. That's what he's known for. _
This is the information age. I personally can watch any game from any team last season with Coaches Film (2 angles, from the top and from the upper side) to compare the footwork of successful quarterbacks and compare it to what Geno put forth last season. Nevermind the fact that Geno took less than 70 passing snaps under center out of more than 400 passing snaps on the season. You're a good poster, but when you latch onto something to defend, sometimes you come off as preaching down to people that may have a far better argument. I don't have to be a QB expert to see the difference between an elite passer, an average passer, and a QB that was very poorly prepared to handle the Jets offense in 2013. Stats are a poor counter argument.
Yeah. The throw he made to Santonio Holmes stands out to me as a really great throw. I don't remember what team it was against but it was a deep out that was thrown before the receiver made his break. It was also a throw that Geno stepped into in spite of knowing he was going to take a hit.
They are jumping those routes because Geno tends to stare down his intended receiver a lot. Did it in college and has continued to do it in the NFL. I was hoping that working with an NFL QB coach, he would break that habit, but it hasn't happened yet. Most of his pick six INTs were because of this. It doesn't matter how quick and/or compact your release is if the D knows where the ball is going to be thrown because you haven't looked anywhere else since you got up to the LOS. He also holds onto the ball too long at times waiting for a WR to get open. Fix those two things along with his footwork and let him play with the WRs he practiced with in training camp and he'll do just fine.
I'm a poster on TGG, just like you. I may have been a little harsh using the word "sorry" but it doesn't change the fact that you seem bitter towards a qb that led a rival team in college. This is evident by the way you nitpick his throwing motion of all things. I understand it's hard to let past grudges go but he is now the leader of the pro football team you and I root for. Quit harping on his lack of a "compact tight release" and instead pray he makes strides in his ability to complete passes and score touchdowns. Btw Syracuse beat WVU by 6 points in the pinstripe bowl (held in Yankees stadium). I'd hardly call that a handily beating.
With all the potential in these new weapons Geno has at his disposal. There is no doubt in my mind he is going to take a big leap. Towards the end of the season he was putting more trust in his legs as well as his arm. The main thing is to: 1) Cut down on turnovers. 2) Play through his progressions and not stare down his first target 3) Be a better on the field leader. I swear there were times when he would play poorly and just keep his head down, never engaged in a teammate. I can understand why but mistakes happen and Geno is smart enough to deal through that shit. 4) Throw to "Mr. Speed" Jalen Saunders because I think he is a steal and is gonna be a stud, but that's just me. 5) Progress through the season. We cant have Geno play like Manning one day and then like Gabbert the next. He needs to show consistency. 5) This one is a deal breaker. If...and i mean WHEN we make the post season, I want to see how his maturity levels out. Will he be a Dalton and just be godawful or will he push through and perform on the biggest stage. He has all the tools to be successful. Hes fast, stands well in the pocket, takes hits and still delivers his throws. But when he takes this team to the postseason he needs to step up. Sanchez was great in the postseason and im sure Geno will step up.
The only way Geno starts is if Rex/MM are 100% convinced the Jets make the playoffs with Geno under center. Geno's 'continued development' is very important. For Rex & MM there's only one thing more important. Keeping their jobs.
I have no grudges against a past QBs that faced my team, not bitter about anything that happened in college with a rival. If I was I'd hate Mike Vick because he killed the Cuse football program and effectively brought about the end of the Big East-but I don't. I like the player. This is a discussion board not a rah-rah board. You can hope and pray all you want but we're discussing what he needs to do to get better and when some one says something wrong about a player, it's perfectly fine to discuss the point. It's not nitpicking, it's offseason discussion. If you disagree fine, but this isn't a prayer and hope board. It's a reality board. We can hope and pray all we want as fans, but that's not going to make him read defenses better and make quicker decisions. Or tighten up his delivery and release. Btw, I was at the Pinstripe Bowl and Syracuse destroyed WVU 38-14, and while I was told there would be no math on this test, I'm pretty sure that's by more than 6 points. We out gained them 500 yards to 300 yards and Geno was awful. But maybe I'm wrong, might want to check that, though. I could be nitpicking. _
Btw, Geno never beat my "sorry" CFB team as a starter, not even once. He was 0-3 (I was there for two of them) and he was awful in all three. Maybe that's why I wasn't as excited as everyone else here when we drafted him. Certainly not something to be bitter about or hold a grudge. _
