I think you're all giving Pettine way too much credit as far as thinking this thing out and trying to throw spears a Rex/Belicheck.

This is Pettines first gig. Prior to this he was a HS coach or a coordinator with little press. But now he's the BMOC getting interviews etc. I think he's in over his head and is finding out just how hard it is to be the mouth piece of an NFL organization.

Funny thing is when he was here and did his little presser he tried so hard to be a bad ass and be just like Belicheck with his 'answers'. Dudes a douche and I hope he crashes and burns.

Rex Ryan is a buffoon. He was a buffoon the day they hired him, he has played the buffoon the entire time he has been here, and he will still be a buffoon when he is shown the door at the end of this season.

BB probably does have a copy but we all know the pats prefer video.

Rex will never be at BB's level as a coach, not even close. The mindset that would lead to Rex giving out play-books is in stark contrast to BB who is always looking for an advantage not a friend. I relate to Rex and his personality because he is real he is flawed and he knows it but he also doesn't give a shit and he is going to do it his way. God bless him and his ego and his warts.

Pettine strikes me as a guy who always thinks he is the smartest in the room. I will take the guy who knows what he doesn't know over a guy like him every time.

Rex with Tom Brady at QB would seem just as good as BB if not better. Tom Brady made Bellicheat seem like a genius. It's not like BB runs the offense or even calls plays. I mean he specializes in D, yet hasn't had a top D in ages. That speaks volumes about his abilities. Tom Brady is just damn good at reading defense and getting rid of the ball quick to an open man. Let's look at BB's defensive skills. 2008 was the last year BB had a top ten defense (#10 ranking). Since 2010, they have been a bottom 10 defense. They have only hit the top 5 ONCE under Bellicheat (#4 in 2007). BB lucked into Tom Brady and that's his meal ticket. In 1999, the year before Bellicheat, they had a #8 defense. BB inherited that D and then dropped to #20 in 2000, and #24 in 2001. Yeah what a defensive guru!!! Rex took a middle of the pack D to #1 in a single season. BB has never had close to that type of success on the side of the ball he specializes in.

Rex specializes in D and his impact is noticed directly. He's only fallen out of the top 10 ONCE (last year at #11), was top 5 3 of 5 years, and #1 overall in his first year.

BB can't hold Rex's jockstrap when it comes to defense and without Brady they don't have all those division titles. But you're right. Rex will never be on BB's level, he'll be above it until he retires. Without Brady, BB isn't a household name.

I love this post! Just think if the Jets had a ready made offense with a franchise QB and all they needed was a HC to build a decent defense. I agree.....Rex and Brady would have won 10 SBs in a row. Without cheating.

Bill is a really good head coach. As a GM/drafter, not too sure, I don't think he's as great or even good. The Patriots 2001 offense is completely different than 2007 and 2011 for example. Maybe you credit all the OC or someone like that, but I think Bill has definitely had a hand in making it so effective. Obviously Brady is a great QB, but also look how Brady has developed and the offense with it to maximize Brady's strengths.

Bill even took an unexpected injury to Brady and went 11-5, being the 2nd team ever to miss the playoffs with a 11-5 record. He's an incredible coach and done a great job hiding a lack of self inflicted run game and defense. I separate Bill the coach from Bill the team builder. I also like Bill's choices not to follow the 2 PT conversion chart and being more risky on 4th downs than the average NFL coach. Also, taking the wind in the OT game against Denver this year, just shows he has a great understand of the rules and game.

This isn't to say Rex is a bad coach. I think I have a higher opinion than the average on TGG of Rex's coaching ability.

I don't see Rex as a guy who admits he doesn't know anything. he's very insecure, so he makes up for it by telling everyone he's a great defensive coach, like he needs to tell us in case we don't know. Or because he needs to prove it to himself. Most of us can already see he's a terrific defensive coach without him telling us.

Guys who know they are really good don't need to tell people they are all the time, they know that everyone knows they're good or they don't care what other people think.

Guys who toot their own horn constantly tend to be the ones who feel the need to convince people they are good... or convince themselves.

Wow - so much wrong with this post.

Rex Ryan will never have a franchise QB because he doesn't know how to coach or manage the position. He will never have a Tom Brady because if he did he wouldn't know what to do with him. He'd be trying to "ground and pound" with him - not only that, the QB would never get better or develop...

I actually agree in many ways that Belichick owes most of his success to Brady. He'd be a DC somewhere today without him. But at the same time, Belichick does deserve a lot of credit for how he's managed and developed Brady along the way. For starters, he deserves credit just for having an eye for Brady's talent. Getting lucky in the draft is one thing - but he recognized when brady arrived that he could play and instead of trying to put him on the practice squad he carried extra QBs because he didn't want to lose him, gave him the backup job the next year, sticking with him when Bledsoe got back, etc.

I don't see Rex doing that at all. He'd either be too loyal to his veteran that sucks and cut Brady in TC or he wouldn't have been able to recognize his talent, or both. Think about if Simms was showing flashes of potential like Tom Brady was, right now - you really think Rex would see it, or that he'd manage to ensure the kid sticks? Hell he's going to cut him in August simply because they drafted his son's college friend!!!!!

Second, I think Belichick deserves a lot of credit for playing to Brady's strengths. It's one thing to have an amazing QB but another to get the most out of him. Belichick has recognized Brady's biggest strengths are his pocket awareness and accuracy in the middle of the field. So what do they do? Design a complex offense filled with slot receivers and TEs that are dangerous across the middle, capitalizing on his strengths. There's no way Rex Ryan has the offensive acumen to do that... They'd be rolling Brady out all day, or handing it off too much or designing routes to the deep and outside, his weakness. Or Rex would just be doing whatever the OC comes up with no matter what because he's too loyal - even if the guy was completely wrong.

People think Rex would be a great HC if he had a franchise QB - but the most important job of a HC is managing the QB position.. and he's been terrible at it. So that statement shouldn't be an excuse but instead a reason why Rex isn't a good HC.

Yes. Rex isn't clever or cerebral enough to think of something like that. Face it...the man is a doofus.

He has one of if not the best defensive mind in football and now he isn't clever or cerebral? Think before you speak. If he's such a doofus how come you haven't seen a fraction of his success in life?

LOL. Rex rarely ever toots his own horn. He usually praises his players, rather than himself. Obviously it's hard to deny how good Rex is with D, based on the Ravens and Jets D over the past 10 years +. He's brought it up a couple times, but then again elite players brag all the time in the NFL and it doesn't take away from their eliteness.

First, Rex has gone out of his way at least twice in the last 3 years to state that he thought he was the best defensive coach in football.

Second, I never said it takes anything away from how good a defensive coach he is, and I said I think he is a very very good defensive coach.

That's a load of crap. Whereas BB would know exactly what to do, right, because he had so much success in Cleveland and NE without Brady right? We have a QB coach and OC with proven track records. Arguing that Rex wouldn't know how to develop a QB is nonsensical. That isn't his job, and I don't think it's BB's either. We've been stuck with bad QBs, there's no way to compare what would happen if a Tom Brady caliber player came along, and what would happen.

And this all had nothing to do with the other offensive coaches, right? It wasn't until the Bledsoe injury that they really knew what they had in Brady. Nobody expected that. They thought he might be a solid replacement but to suggest that BB knew Brady would jump in become elite that fast is nonsense and it's always easy to look at in hindsight when things go right. If you really want to suggest that BB knew ahead of time, you'd have to concede that he should have replaced Bledsoe earlier. That would be the icing on the cake, to show that BB knew what he was doing. But instead he stuck with Bledsoe (OMG BB LOYALTY TO VETS, HOW TERRIBLE!!!) until he was forced to go to Brady due to injury. Sorry, but that is pure luck, not even BB himself knew what he had in Brady at the time, if he did, he would have started him.

Rex plays whoever gives him the best chance to win. The "he's too loyal" mantra is false and has been debunked by the multiple times he has played young guys over aging vets. At the same time, if the vets are playing better, they will start. That's just a Rex myth, and claiming Simms is getting cut simply because they drafted his son's college friend is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. It's not as simple as "REX SAYS HE STAYS" We have a whole myriad of coaches to give input on this. I'd trust that if Matt Simms was the next Brady, MM would be the one to notice. But then again if Boyd outplays him, what's the justification in keeping Simms on the roster?

Pure speculation, I'm pretty sure that BB did not design and run that offense. It's funny how with the Jets, you blame Rex completely for not contributing to offense directly, but with the Pats you give BB ALL the credit, as if the other coaches haven't done shit on either team.

No. The most important job of the OC is managing the QB position. Why do you think it's all up to the head coach? Please explain what Rex Ryan should be doing differently. Should he be over riding an offensive expert like MM? Should he have not supported G&P offense when Sanchez was green (basically he whole career lol). Do you have any evidence that BB is directly responsible for Brady? Obviously in hindsight it's easy to claim or speak about in reference to, but Tom Brady on the Jets roster and people are praising Rex just as heavily as they praise Belicheat today. I mean come on. More than half of what they do is hurry up, which is pretty much all Brady exploiting mismatches.
