dang, if klecko couldve been a little healthier and the jets hit on a couple more draft picks in 82/83/84 we could have had something much bigger.
The truck driver from Temple was a beast. Strong as an ox but with surprising speed when he first broke in at DE. Played with that angled stance after moving to the inside. On a down note, if you ever needed a reason to dislike the 'classy' New England Patriots, look no further than the absolute cheapshot that Don Hasselbeck laid on Klecko, blocking an already downed Klecko and injuring him in the preocess. It was a Dale Rolfe/Schlutz-type moment and frankly I was incensed that there wasn't payback for that POS stunt by Hasselbeck.
PAUL ROCHESTER CHRIS WARD (Ward lost his helmet, Lyle Alzado lost his head in a steroidal meltdown, and the Raiders lost the game)
so that was a Patriot thing? so we must be classless for the cheap shot that ended Dwight Stephenson's career?
This picture is amazing. 5 guys tackling him from all sides and at his ankles, and the guy in front looks headed for his knee. If you told me this pic was of a season-ending injury I'd believe it. He was one tough son of a bitch.
While Lyons' hit on Stephenson was unfortunate, to suggest putting it on a level of the Hasselbeck cheapshot is pure and utter folly. Klecko was falling down after engaging a block by Holloway - Stephenson was upright. Further, Lyons and Stephenson were teammates at UAla and good friends. Defend the Patriots all you want (or argue for the sake of arguing) but I actually saw the game and saw the cheapshot with my own eyes and clearly recalled Hasselbeck being called out on his cheapshot by both announcers who were pretty disgusted with the scene. Lyons remembers the play as if it happened yesterday. ''It's something I've gone over in my mind a thousand times. I wish I could take the hit back,'' he said. ''I came off a block with my head down, and I saw Dwight running toward me. It's a natural instinct to hit whomever you see. I really felt bad about it afterwards.''
Joe the worst cheapshot I ever saw the play was over for 2 seconds and Klecko was on the ground and the big ahole dove full body weight right into his knee and ruptured his patella, never got suspended either
Lou was an animal he and Mike Battle would break up the wedge on kickoffs, they called them the Kamikaze Brothers, he was 5'9" 180lbs of heart, we chanted his name every game, things got so bad that year 1976 that at 1 home game they announced the special teams and Lou was 1st out and the crowd went nuts...earlier version of Steve Tasker
Hasselbeck was a noted cheap shot artist, Marty Lyons was not, Marty's was by accident that asshole Hasselbeck knew what he was doing...
Absolutely correct Matt. And to paraphrase Marty, I remember the Hasselbeck cheapshot like it was yesterday as well, it was that egregious.
we hate the Pats, I get it but why wasn't it an isolated incident? heat of the battle? did they have a history of cheap shots like that? was it ordered from above?
Absolute correct Matt. Hasselbeck was a noted cheapshot artist unlike the guy he sat behind, Russ Francis. And to paraphrase Marty, I remember Hasselbeck's cheapshot like it were yesterday, it was that egregious.
